He knew what happened .Black & tan .His mate was bashed and informed . James Coban " You were my mate but regardless you informed ya gota go" its not right . I loved you . All they wanted was a united Ireland
The girl in these scenes is not literal, but a representation of Ireland being Free. Both John/Sean and Nolan share this love for Ireland and the flashbacks are more of dream fantasy that John creates to shroud the loss and disappointment of what happened before he exiled himself to Mexico and avoid prosecution by the British. At first I thought she was a literal person, but if you watch the final flashback you see John hand off the girl (Ireland) to his friend Nolan and he doesn't protest or look upon them with vain and disapproval. He's remembering the love and dedication they had for the Revolution in Ireland that didn't pan out the way they had hoped and his memory is morphed into a fantasy of them sharing a beautiful woman that represents that which is lost forever.
Fan Made Videos Are they both IRA or is it just john and the other one is on the ennemy side. And what’s up with the scene un the pub with the treason and John has to kill his friend? I didn’t really understand that scene
@@salutilouis1899 I think yes - both IRA, anti British. His mate in the later scene was tortured to shop/turn in his friends/comrades. Depends how you read that scene - to me - the guy betraying him in knows what happens next - i.e. the look between them is not necessarily hate - more regret and acceptance of what has to happen. More like a salvation, and then Sean has to leave the whole thing hence America. Two friends/comrades with one forced to betray his countrymen. Just how I read it - no idea if that was how it was written/intended
First, sorry for my poor English and second , i think that the girl was a simply friend of both, one day with Sean/John, one day with Nolan, don't fly with your mind. (Non fate castelli in aria.) This is my personal opinion. The music is unbelievable. Grazie, Maestro Ennio Morricone.
Considering that Benito Mussolina was shot in this movie and he thought western cowboy was farce which he was right it only lasted 20 years. Leone father was communist.
Toner`s pub on Baggott Street in Dublin. This bar was also used in the 1979 movie `The Hard Way` starring Patrick McGoohan and Lee Van Clief, oh yeah, and my dad as the Dublin detective on the walkie talkie in a trench coat in Dublin airport. Great movie. It is the only movie the late Edna O`Brien ever acted in. The late Mick Lynch ( Dinny, from Glen Row ) has a scene in the movie with Patrick McGoohan in this bar Toner`s. Living near enough all my life i have always enjoyed a pint every now and again in this proper old Dublin favourite drinking establishment. Slainte.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid cause the theme has my name in it and I share the same name as Sean in the movie. My dad and uncle used to watch it during the troubles in Ireland back in the 70/80s, I later went back a few years ago to watch it properly as an adult and now it's my favourite film. Now I know why they watched it. I have it on Blu-ray.
Saw it in the theater in ‘71 when it came out. What a crazy name I thought. But absolutely loved it and sought a decent copy of it for years after home video came out. My favorite Coburn movie along with Waterhole #3.
When this first car scene came on, I knew it was gonna be a different type of Sergio Leone movie. It's really not like the Western gunslinger flicks he was mostly known for, and that's what makes it great. These few scenes convey so much heart and emotion without any dialogue at all.
@@fabriziorusso8387 i was 7 when my mum and me watched this back in 73, YES I CAN REMEMBER BECAUSE IT SIMPLY TOUCHED SOMETHING IN ME EVEN AS A CHILD, and from that day i loved the film and music. i even have the original film quad poster framed at the top of my stairs .. sadly she passed away last June but i had this music played at her funeral. Very poignant to me is this film and music. im so happy to read the comments as i can so relate. keep well .
Love, friendship and passion, but also dedication to an ideal. In the end the judgment, but as Sean says, "I have already judged... once". N.B. The original title was "Giù la testa Coglione"
Watched this the night before my Dad died. He laughed cried at this movie. I love it.

I'm not Irish but I love this movie. This movie was my first exposure to the Irish revolution.

The human face is the most wonderful thing in the universe. It is amazing how much emotions people can express with their face.
These scenes are perfect. This movie is masterpiece.
Probably the saddest Leone. Always has a tendency to make me cry unlike his other movies!
Considering that Benito Mussolina was shot in this movie and he thought western cowboy was farce which he was right it only lasted 20 years. Leone father was communist.
Once upon a time in America hit hard too
This was in my humble opinion ,the best film SL ever did. It so encapsulated the Irish at that time.
it's my fave, too ! His most comoving film I think... Thinking, today, that he didn't want to make it himself !!...
I think it was most deepest movie in the trilogy...
i have been to that pub in 2018 t still the same looked in the mirror like the great man and stud in the same spot as the great man
well done!

Toners, Dublin
Stood, not stud. Ce'ad Mile Fa'ilte.
STUNNING! in every way , the soundtrack , the movie , the director.

I agree, this film always left an impression on me and still does. Constant vigilance or we find ourselves in Sean’s situation.

Que dire de plus 😢
Such a sad yet beautiful scene

She represents Ireland, that they both loved. Simple really.
What a great film to watch together for the last time. Before I even got to this clip, I thought about these scenes, especially the barroom betrayal.
MASTERPIECE AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL FILM
Love the movie and loved the soundtrack more...
This movie is... A MASTERPIECE EVER!
Bellissimo film la colonna sonora stupenda
The ONLY western with european flasbacks.
Is not a Western
Epic Zapata western/period film.
John in Mexico is tormented and haunted by his past, and it seems a little of PTSD in there ...

Coburn shot his best friend in plain sight.
Can't believe he was in his early 40s here
Ennio Morricone
No debí haber nacido 😭
Right Now…Ireland needs a few more Sean’s with the illegal migration problem..Long Live Ireland…
Yes Ireland is mess now and I think 🤔 Irish and British governments are more tryantical than in 1916.

A fistful of dynamite
John was reminded of his friend's betrayal when he saw the doctor betray the rebels.
