Anytime Chet is playing, the audience is just holding their breath. It's quieter than prayer time in church. What a sound! Soothing and smooth. I'm always amazed that he can get so much music from ONE guitar! This is the most beautiful piece I've ever heard! I love that small smile of satisfaction that he has. You know he's so happy to be bringing pleasure to the people.
I remember this song when it was sung by the late Gabby Pahinui here in Hawai'i in the 70's. Chet does great justice to it in his instrumental of it. And he's playing it in Hawaiian slack key tuning open "C". God bless the late Chet and Gabby.
I have that song on vinyl. When his son Martin recorded it about 25 years later it was so close to the original that I can barely detect which one it was, as he copied it so precisely, from the voice to the instrumentation.
He's been my guitar hero and influenced since I have been playing guitar. I started st 13 years old and am now 75. He helped create my own style. Thank you Chet. Bob M.
The people in the audience may not have had any idea of what they were hearing, other than it was just a beautiful song. Mr. Atkins played it as a tribute to an amazing Hawaiian musician, Gabby Pahinui, and did it splendidly with much love & respect.
What I love about this tune, as Chet plays it is how it makes me feel serene and happy inside. It's just such a peaceful tune. And Chet does it justice.
Chet playing a solo is like he's letting us listen in on his private conversation with his beautiful instrument. I love hearing Chet play a steel string acoustic flat time with no band just him! Makes my blood cells more red
This is a GREAT version of a classic Hawai'ian standard song. Gabby Pahinui was famous for starting the revival of this style of Hawai'ian Slack Key in the '60s and '70s, where the guitar strings are slacked and tuned to an open tuning. Not too many people can tune and play Slack Key, but the master of guitar himself, Chet Atkins has done it, and done almost any style of guitar music!! Incredible!! -Stan Aoki (a Slack Key picker also)
I love his slack guitar stuff ... fantastic ... it has inspired me to learn this on the uke ... I found the guitar tabs as well. Perhaps I will dig it out of the closet !!
Yes, there is no exaggeration in saying this man was one of the all time greats. Perhaps the greatest in some respects. How many others virtually invented a style of playing still referred to by their names - and still have guitarists old and young uploading covers of their music from decades past. Yes, Chester epitomized greatness.
Very nice. Tuned C-G-D-G-B-E, called 'Leonard's C' (for Leonard Kwan) among most knowledgeable Hawaiians and slack key players. Song is in the Key of C.
Hey Bill, thanks for this tid-bit. Have used this tuning, knew Chet used it on several songs and am familiar with a few recordings by Leonard. Just never knew they were all related. A great tuning for the key of C. Learned from Chets' appearance on a video with George Winston, the piano/slack key player.
@@patricklee780 Hey Patrick thanks for the tip! Enjoyed the vid very much. This is a wonderful song and have enjoyed every rendition I've heard, especially Gabbies own that he plays and sings with his crew. Gives me goose bumps! First heard it by Chet though. Ciao!
OH MY GOSH what a treat!! I am ecstatic I stumbled upon this! I guess he didn't play true slack key because his audience were expecting a tuned guitar, but still this was delicious, thank you and mahalo!
I had no idea that this existed. Chicken skin fo days! Now I need to know more about Chet's connection with Gabby. His playing is legit old style slack key. Aloha from Manoa, O'ahu!
Just wanted to share: The International Astronomical Union has named a crater on the planet of Mercury after the late Hawaiian musician Gabby Pahinui. All the craters on Mercury, the solar systems smallest and innermost planet, are named for famous, deceased artists, musicians, authors or other contributors to the humanities, Eight others were named along with the Pahinui Crater, including L’Engle Crater, for Madeleine L’Engle, author of “A Wrinkle in Time,” and Lovecraft Crater, for American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft.
Hawaiian slack key music traveled far , the great Chet Akins is playing Hawaiian music , ry cooder and others like Taj Mahal have jam with gabby children
A place song...written for the home of the Alapa`i `Ohana, the Hao `Ohana, Keakealani `Ohana & many more great paniolo from my home on Hawai`i Island...
I've noticed that in his later performances Chet seems to have abandoned his Gibson namesake nylon string guitars for this beautiful J-45 style guitar with steel strings. It seems to be a custom made 'cause I don't see a name anywhere. Also, this rendition is a bit different than the one on the"Almost Alone" album. thanks for any info you can pass along.
LOVE CHET ATKINS USING CHORDS Am n Dm TO MAKE HIS MUSIC SOUNDS ENCHANTED MODERN VS THE BEATLES OLD FASHION BORING SONGS OF THE 60s n 70s. Never like the Beatles musics when I was just 21 yrs old. Never bought a Beatles album.
EpiphoneArchtopLover Hi from Nick Mellor in UK. On Chet Video - Pu, Uana Hulu (Remembering Gabby) Live 1996, you commented:- I have an identical guitar!! Same soundhole pickup and everything! What make of Guitar is this and what type of pickup? Many thanks for your help.
Mr Rarestuff. If you want to honor the musician, you should also honor the music. The name of the song as was pointed out below by Medic96744 is "Pu'uanahulu" written by David Alapai. If you know how to upload videos on youtube, I'm sure you also know how to edit what you upload. It would take you less than a minute to do the right thing and truly honor the music as well as the artist performing it.
If you are not going to use the correct song title, then why don't you name the video "White Christmas". It would show up in more searches and get more views. Your refusal to edit the video when it could be done so easily, to reflect the correct song title just amazes me
This song took me back to early-mid 70s. I enjoyed it, even though he didn't play it slack-style. Alapai wrote it, Gabby made it a household favorite. Chill.
Aloha to you Mr.Atkins. Gabby is my Great Grandpa and I’m sure he’d be proud of this 🤙

In my opinion he was the most versatile guitarist to ever live he just had that magic touch
He's been my guitar hero and influenced since I have been playing guitar. I started st 13 years old and am now 75. He helped create my own style. Thank you Chet. Bob M.

Chet you have no equal - you are the GREATEST !
Goes to show how great Hawaiian music is and how respected. We also invented the steel guitar or slide that is famous around the world.
When I hear him play I cry love him so much😢😢
I feel the same...💖
That's awesome. Thank you for perpetuating the Hawaiian culture Mr. Atkins.

Totally agree! Just him accompanying himself.
Simply amazing! And watching him actually accompany himself is mind blowing...
Awesome ,the best guitarist in the world!.
Simply beautiful...
We miss you Chet!

Mahalo for remembering our Gabby Pahinui.
AMEN. Do you know if the lava house is still in the family?
J'adore Chet Atkins. C'est une légende et modeste comme tous les grands...
Just beautiful! Perfect intonation and timing!
A rare treat listening to CHET play a Hawaiian Tune called Pu'u Anahulu
There will never be another Chester Atkins. God rest his soul. We miss you, Chet!

Just love
He had 3 guitarists in his hands. The bassist, rythm and lead guitarist rolled into one.

Wow, the audience must have been scratching their heads wondering what song this was. I guess I forgot he learned to play Slack Key.
I don't think he ever knew- but what an incredible treat it was happening upon this vid by accident!! I miss Pops so bad. !_!
I agree with Johnny X 100%!
Even a master at Slack key guitar. Unreal!
except that wasn't slack key, brah
Inspired by but not true slack key
Nice country swing version of Gabby's song in a Hawaiian Slack key Key of G.
Puʻuanahulu is the actual title of the song

If I recall correctly this is what the song is called on the album.
I never understood your trouble. I took the title from the album. Changed it for good now
