There are plenty of historical vehicles with fixed forward facing cannon. Hetzer, STUG, etc, the Swedish S-Tank. Space Marine bikes also have fixed forward bolters. For an assault vehicle, moving towards the enemy, front facing isn't a problem for me.

The Leman Russ is a great example of how to do the "something from history as sci-fi" idea. It's essentially an old world war one tank with a vaguely modernish turret on top. It means that you get all the associations with those old vehicles, the slow, lumbering, archaic, inexorable ideas that it invokes, which is exactly what you want for the imperial guard, whilst also looking different enough that you don't immediately think "oh that's just a ww1 tank with space lasers". It is, in my opinion, one of the best designs in all of Warhammer 40K.

Tanks were initially developed under the Navy, as part of the "Land Ship Comission" so most tankers refer to their tanks as having hulls. (For example, a Hull Down Position, is one in which the hull of the tank is safe below terrain or a ridge-line, with the turret still exposed/useable in combat)

My main issue with both basic squad boxes is that neither comes with all the special weapon choices. Catachan's only come with a flamer while the Cadian's get a flamer and grenade launcher. No plasma gun, melta gun, or sniper rifle in either. For those you have to buy metal blister packs where each mini is double the price of what a single figure from from either box costs. And the Catachan get overlooked as there is only a sniper pack meaning they have no plasma, melta, or grenade launcher version currently available (yes, I know there was a female Catachan with a grenade launcher, I own one). If those ever existed it's off to the depths of eBay if you want one.

Love these vids. I've looked over them all dozens of times in GW's site, but enjoy other opinions.

Hull is the correct term, although chassis is fine. A lot of tank terminology comes from ships, the first tanks were called landships

The torax mod making it a six wheeled apc is a vast improvement and the side guns never really stuck around on mine.

I love this range, just can't force myself to get into it because of the crazy number of models needed for a playable army. I learned my lesson after what felt like the millionth skink for my Seraphon army that I started just because I liked the look of the range.

I have probably 3 k of scions, they brought put a box with 20 troops, 2 taurox and a valk, the start collecting box was really good value too

Been playing Imperial Guard since 3rd edition as a teenager and I never get tired of their miniatures. Just a shame they don't have an extensive range for non-Cadians/Catachans these days, the other regiments like the Vostroyans, Valhallans and Tallarns have so much character.

the side auto cannons are in a position to lay supressing fire a great thing when exiting the vehicle in combat one real life example of this is the Russian IS7 tank which had two machine guns on the side facing forward and two on the side of the turret facing back they where put there for nothing more then supressing fire which does not need to be direct it just needs to hit in the general direction

We broke a tape measure trying to measure the earthshakers 240" range. We played apocalypse across many tables and you know we had an artillery table with guardsman trying to keep their tanks shouting as long as possible

    *Ways to improve the Taurox*
Extend the rear troop bay and rear tracks, replace front tracks with big beefy tyres. And add autocannon sponsons, if there are guns not mounted in the turret?

Taurox. Engine exhaust into cab. Fixed forward firing MG! Tracks with mudguards moulded on fit under mudguards. Guaranteed to cause tracks to throw. Hull is interesting but could have been much, much better. Also like all GW vehicles too small for crew/capacity. Only Chimera really works.

Of course the Leman Russ looks rustic and agricultural, iirc the thing is actually based on the STC for a tractor that someone in the Age of Strife decided to strap guns to.

the taurox looks so much better with wheel like so much. I have three with wheels from Victoria miniatures and third on the build list that will be a half track as it's going to be the missile variant.

I’ve been kitbashing with the Catachan Infantry kit, and I will say the GW paint scheme really lets them down. The heads hold up very well under a modern paint job, and the only real bugbear is that you have to do a lot of custom gap filling with their arms: the shoulder join has a lof of sheer flat surfaces you can’t hide without green stuff.

Of the IG vehicles, the Basilisk is the one I feel really needs an update... It needs to be enclosed!

At least the modern Russ kit comes with all the weapon options. In the 90s the heavy plasma and Gatling cannon weren't part of the kit.

As a former US Army tanker hull is the right word to use for armored(armoured for you) vehicles.

I believe the Catachan and Cadian command squads came out at the same time, coinciding with the 5th edition codex.
Also, the flag dude with the janky mouth has a cigar. That's why he looks weird from that angle.

Id love to see new cadians and catachans although I think the cadians still look fine. Though what I would rather see is some multi part plastic troop, command and heavy boxes for valhallans, tallarn, mordian and vostroyans. Maybe cheaper, more affordable death korps of krieg as well.

Man these range reviews are pure gold. The torrix or whatever it’s called looks like a rg31, also you could just replace the front track sections with two wheels. Kinda like a half track. Also I’m not sure if you’re aware but putting wipers that block a driver’s view and do practically nothing is exactly what real military vehicles are like. So bonus for realism I guess

Most of the vehicles are fine. Even the dodgy no suspension tracks. The Basilisk kit is the oldest and can be a shit to put together and the best vehicles candidate for a new kit. They could easily do 1 artillery kit that can make basilisk/hydra/wyvern/griffon and id love the option for enclosed crew compartment. The Taurox sucks but is relatively new so probably won't be changing anytime soon. The Catachans really are the main regiment needing a new infantry kit, though I'd love to see all regiments in plastic, and they could bundle regiments into box sets with upgrade sprues.

Hey kirioth, you did a video a while back about models that need an update, how about the opposite, a video on gw kits that were amazing but got replaced with clearly inferior plastic kits (perfect example: tzeentch horrors. Remember the metal ones?!)

Most Russian tanks had solid placed guns that the driver operated rather than the gunner or radio operator. the driver would just aim the vehicle and shoot and it worked well for large crowds.. But yeah a mantel mounted weapon makes much more sense if you can pivot it.
Also the laz guns pointing out are similar in design to many APC's and can usually be moved to a point where they can be shot at least.. more guns are better usually, similar idea to a pistol port.
