This was one of the best scenes in Shadowhunters so far. Music was amazing, acting was amazing, storyline was fantastic, and it was one of the rare realistic portrayals of the Parabatai bond
I remember being so hyped for 2x11, the start of the second half of season 2. And this scene is the very first of 2x11 - imagine me, being dead on the floor watching this and after this, the intro starts - FREAKING PERFECTION!!!!♥ The best part is, I'm still feeling these emotions, even after 3 years♥
I love the way Alec is not feeling uncomfortable or confused anymore. His relationship with Magnus has made him more confident about himself...you can feel it throughout the episode... can't wait for Monday!
No it didn't. This isn't the book series. Don't get me wrong Alec is more open emotionally wise but from the pilot on we are presented with a 20 something Alec Lightwood who is very confident in his shadow hunting abilities and role at the Institute. He is also a good fighter.

Yes this Alec is an adult, but he was still at the spot of book Alec at the beginning. Closeted, absolutely terrified of anyone finding out he was gay and had a, albeit fleeting, crush on his parabatai. Book Alec was a bit disheartened by Jace being better at some things yes, but he was still confident as a shadowhunter. He wasn't confident as a person. And in the show he was grumpy, hated Clary because Jace fell for her in like 2 seconds and he was jealous, and he was even turning Magnus down to keep himself in the closet. Now he smiles more, has better self esteem, and is even proud of his relationship. Like the guy above said, he isn't unfomfortable anymore. So stop trying to insert a backwards meaning into people's comments. Nobody was talking about Alec's fighting abilities. Alec grew as a person since season 1, which is visible. It's a good thing.

A way to make his situation manageable without needing to either come out or sacrifice everything about having a relationship. Jace had his "book club"- a group of women he was sexually intimate with, but not romantically interested nor emotionally invested in. So, Alec remained the person in Jace's life that he would be the most emotionally open with, rely on, be available for, confide in, etc. Jace was an intimate companion that may not have loved him romantically, yet still prioritized their connection and was more committed to Alec than anyone else. He didn't mind so much being in "the shadow", because Jace kept looking for Alec there and reminded him that he mattered the most to him. And that was good enough... ... until Jace connected with someone else that started fulfilling a similar role to Alec in Jace's life (a confident, someone he could be emotionally open with, etc.), making him less available to meet Alec's needs for companionship. To me, the turmoil Alec seemed to be in wasn't so much "jealousy" per say, than him having built his whole sense of identity around his relationship with Jace. Of having nurtured and idealized their parabatai bond without realizing that Jace might not remain a "book club kinda guy" his whole life. That Jace might be pursuing an actual romance with someone one day, and no longer be available to play the role of a "life partner" to Alec. He accused Jace of having lost sight of them, because what Alec had with Jace was just enough to make the absence of what he "really wanted" (an actual romantic/sexual relationship with another man) bearable. Beyond "jealousy", Clary was taking his strongest coping mechanism from him. He's hostile because she's actually threatening his main emotional support system, safety, and sense of where he fits in his family and the Shadowhunter society. And from being a warm blanket he can snuggle up under to hide from the world, Jace's shadow is becoming something cold and lonely that is threatening to suffocate him. Jace's gaze has shifted to Clary, and now he has to either lock himself away in the dark, while continuing to live up to other people's expectations... A cold and rather miserable existence. Or step out of the shadow, be who he is, challenge other people's expectations, draw attention to himself, face his fears, and hope he'll gain more than he'll lose in the process. And yes... I think that one of the things that might have drawn Magnus to Alec is that habit of his to instinctively identify with those that struggle with who they are, and where they fit in the world. Magnus knows what it feels to be lost and alone, and perceived as an abomination for simply being who you are. Was he ever "in love" with Jace (the same he would be with an actual lover), or was he dependant on their bond to compensate for the lack of romantic partner in his life, in a context where he felt that being gay would go against what's expected of him as a Lightwood and a Shadowhunter. Thanks to learning his parents were ex-Circle members, he thankfully realized that they weren't perfect, and were putting pressure on their kids to be "perfect" to try to correct *their* mistakes. And thanks to Magnus' ability and willingness to connect with who Alec is outside of Jace's parabatai, Alec developed a willingness to follow his gut, develop his own sense of who he is and where he fits in the world, both as a gay man and as a shadowhunter. And falling in love with a downworlder - having Magnus Bane be the one that cared enough to offer him unconditional love, acceptance, safety, and support when he was afraid to be himself, and felt miserable and lost - made him start to question whether the Clave's laws were justified, or rooted in prejudice and fear of what they failed to connect with. His relationship with Magnus definitely inspired the most change and growth in him. He became more confident overall in trusting his own perception of the world, his place in it, and his ability to influence it. Jace is still a huge part of him, but the bond has become more balanced here. Alec knows who he is, he doesn't need to hide any part of himself anymore, and he's no longer using the parabatai bond to compensate for something else. He's actually the one giving Jace the advice that, regardless of the result, he shouldn't hide who he truly is from Clary. They can tease, be emotionally close and authentic, and even playfully flirt with each other because they have a good sense of who they are in relation to each other, interpersonal boundaries, and how far they can go. It truly is a beautiful and open relationship that is extremely refreshing to see being portrayed. And, as a pansexual woman, I also think it's important to show that gender isn't everything when it comes to attraction. That, just because Alec is gay, doesn't mean he gets romantically or sexually "turned on" by a man that he used to have a bit of a crush on as soon as they touch, or relax and throw some playful banter at each other.
So after watching the Malec training video...Alec can apparently be taken down easily if you go for his legs. You'd think the boy would be able to use his long ass legs to his advantage. Get it together Alec.
OK, in Alec's defense, he isn't bad at hand-to-hand. He's really good, Jace just knows his patterns, and uses them against him. Alec has probably tried using Jace's patterns against him, but his technique is too obvious and by the book. He needs to break form and "break noses" so to speak. For instance, when Jace goes for the legs, step on him to pin him down. He would probably kick most of our, if not all of our asses hand-to-hand.
There's just too much chemistry and tension in this scene. I love it! 😍👌 I can still see how Alec drools over Jace and Jace doesn't resist him either. I mean who would? ❤
