    Welcome back to Naval Gazing at Camp David.
    This week’s guest yacht is the big boy from Marsaudon Composites,
    The ORC 57!
    Today we are going to
    1. Review its specifications, pricing and layout against three similar new vessels.
    2. Do a full tour asking, “What would Sylvia say?”
    3. Naval Gaze at an innovation and/or adjustment that might make life aboard easier.
    4. Have a look at the used market for 3-5 year old comparables
    5. And finally give it a “Dave Score” and compare the result with all our previously reviewed yachts.
    From above Vancouver British Columbia, we fly across the Atlantic to the Southeast Coast of France and the home of last week’s yacht at the Outremer/Gunboat yards in La Grande-Motte.
    From here we head Northwest across France to the old Submarine base in Lorient and the yards of Marsaudon Composites who build the ORC 57.
    For our wine pairing this week we head inland and South to Sancerre and the vineyards of Joseph Mellot.
    Our pairing is Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Chatellenie 2020
    Domaine Joseph Mellot is a historical, family-owned wine estate which origins go back to 1513. Over the generations, the Domaine has become a specialist in producing the fine wines of the Central-Loire Valley vineyards. Its unique savoir-faire has given it the legitimacy to be an ambassador for the wines of the region.
    Grapes destined for the Joseph Mellot white wines are crushed in pneumatic presses. This gives them complete control over both the increase in pressure and the length of pressing time, enabling them to extract the purest juice. Fermentation lasts 10 to 15 days at a controlled temperature, and takes place either in Joseph Mellot’s modern winery, or in their historic cellar located in the heart of Sancerre.

    o 3D Forward Looking Sonar
    The 3D Forward Looking Sonar is one of the best proven Forward Looking Sonars. The FLS 3D displays a 3-dimensional representation of the underwater scene ahead of the boat. The seabed terrain and potential hazards are shown, for the first time, in real-time view and with unparalleled realism.
    The FLS 3D comes with twin retractable transducers to ensure complete forward coverage whatever the hull form. The view ahead is 60 degrees in the horizontal plane and over 90 degrees in the vertical plane. The forward range is up to 200 m and 100 meters depth.
    The Transducers comes in two sizes: 5” and 10” depending on the size of the hull. The transducers come with three different types of skin fittings to ensure they will fit any type of hull. You can choose between Bronze, steel or aluminum depending on your hull.The importance of Forward Looking Sonar Technology is the depth to range ratio.
    The FLS 3D has a staggering 20 x depth ratio! This means that you will see 100 meters ahead with only 5 meters of water underneath your boat. This is the highest ratio in Forward Looking Sonar Technology!
    The FLS 3D Forward Looking Sonar has the groundbreaking technology of Real-Time Forward Looking Sonar. The display updates every one second so the captain will always be updated on the seabed terrain and potential hazards ahead. The FLS 3D is also designed as a black box to work with any existing display that has a video input.

    I loved this video. Thank you for the in-depth analysis. Lots of work went into the making of this video and people should be super appreciative of the effort you've put in mate so kudos to you there.
    Some points if you don't mind my saying.
    -loved some of the turns of phrase "elegant minimalism" "superfluous nonsense" "this isn't for Princesses this is for Batman" :)
    -Safety wasn't mentioned much or enough imo. performance means you can sail on a flatter ocean more often and your weather windows expand greatly if your vessel can sail at 6 or 7 knots in 5 knots of wind. On a crossing comfortably being able to sail at speed = safety which is precisely when you want to be safe.
    -putting the Bali and Privilege in any light category is just plain wrong. What would constitute heavy?
    -Outremer = light and Marsaudon = ultralight.
    -because a vessel might sail at 20 knots doesn't mean that one would sail it at that speed at all times. this seems obvious but people seem to forget this.
    -if you are representing the forward facing sonar company you should mention that and if you're not you should mention that also. Not a big deal but maybe in future would be good.
    -your Dave score... your Dave score... you can't put this boat below some of the other boats on this list mate come on. Your dave score should have safety in it as well.
    -lazy sailor in the dave score > the ORC57 should be a 10. You can put up half the sail up with the sheeting all kooked up and wrong and it'll still sail like a beast.
    Again mate I really loved your video you made.
    If you haven't seen mine I'd love for you to check this one out:

      Holy Mackerel!!! I had to look three times to make sure I was really getting a comment from Sailing La Vagabond and Riley. Thanks so very much for your kind comments and detailed thoughts. You have to know up front that the extent of my sailing experience is a Lazer on a lake as a kid and the RYA Competent Crew sailing course off the coast of Vancouver. The first time I was on a cat was in April this year at La Grande-Motte. The channel is a tongue in cheek attempt to slowly convince my beloved that a circumnavigation would be a fantastic retirement project. (Its sloooowwwly working). I never expected to learn so much from my audience, but comments like yours are just fantastic. Re the products. I really did laugh out loud, but you are right, now that I think of it. I only have 350 subs and never think that folks might think I’m pitching. When I started this, I had no idea that a 20 ton Leopard 50 was super heavy so sometimes I put a couple of led sleds along side performance machines just so other newbies like me can grasp the delta. Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to write these great points. They will all be put to great use. I’m dying to see your Rapido an look forward to continuing to follow your adventures. Who knows…maybe you will see Sylvia and I out there one day six years from now.

    Sonar on a catamaran is a waste of money. This only would be helpful in anchoring or when navigating uncharted or murky waters at idle speed. If you are sailing at 10 knots and and think sonar would do you any good at all, you are in for a surprise and not the good kind lol!
    Dave, enjoy your videos, would be a good to make one that gives your background and experience sailing/boating in you and the admiral’s life that’s shaping your views/opinions on the boats you’ve been reviewing. (How many miles you’ve sailed/locations/types of boats/how many nights at anchor, etc.)

      Hey Kirk. Thanks for commenting! As always, you have a great point that I, with my limited experience, didn’t consider. In 5 m of water at 5kts, you would have a 40 sec warning. In 2.5m at 5kts 20 sec. It’s tight, but it might save you if you are watching. I can’t imagine doing 10 kts in 5m of water due to my limited experience. At this stage, I would be just too nervous. My thought was the circumstances you mentioned: anchoring or uncharted or murky waters. When Great Circle hit her rudder a few weeks back, I believe they were quite shallow and going slow. The light was low and they just missed seeing the coral head.
      Re my sailing experience. My friend, this will be short. I sailed lasers a little as a kid, spent most of my youth driving dad’s ski boat and then bought my own 22’Four Winns. I took a week long course in the islands off the West Coast of Vancouver on a 53’ trawler and then got my RYA Competent Crew on a 38 X Yacht in Vancouver area waters. That’s all she wrote. No expert here.
      Thanks again for watching and your great comments!

      @@navalgazingatcampdavid Hi David, so what I believe what happened with Cat Greatcircle is that they were actually anchored and swung into the coral head as the winds changed. I may be wrong, but I do remember this same fear when we were sailing in French Polynesia. You'd have to be going so crazy slow for this to help out, I'd recommend there are much better things to spend your money on that would add safety (like a FLIR 364C) camera on the mast.
      It's all good on experience, I was about the same level back in 2015 when I retired and decided this would be a hell of a fun way to spend all this new found time! My #1 suggestion would be for you and the wife to take a bare boat charter just the two of you (nobody else to help at all) for 10-14 days in someplace "easy" but still spectacular. Like the BVI's or the protected waters of Abaco. Get a small 40' cat and see how you two handle it, then do the same type of trip on a 45-50' monohull. Definitely want to do this before plunking down a couple million bucks on a boat lol!

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid
      @navalgazingatcampdavid  Год назад

      @@kirkb3473 so given your journey, would you consider a mono-hull for the circumnavigation project or stick to a cat?

    • @kirkb3473
      @kirkb3473 Год назад

      @@navalgazingatcampdavid so that’s really depends on what you and your wife like. We sailed them all and really love monohulls for the “feel” of sailing. The Oyster 565, Garcia 52, HR 50, Amel 60 were on our short list & would be awesome, but the space and speed of a cat is just such a more enjoyable Liveaboard experience. We looked at all the boats you’ve reviewed and ended up choosing a Balance 526 for reasons important to us, but any of them would have been excellent choices. You just have to get out there and spend time on board & learning what you like, even if it’s on a crappy charter boat!

      @bobjohns8914 Год назад +1

      This is my understanding also. Hitting something (Cargo Container / Whale) at speed is far more worrisome that hitting a chunk of coral while put-putting in for anchor...
