it's funny, in the 90's, when a guy gets lonely, he rents a VHS where a girl comes out in the flesh. Fast forward to the 20's, when a guy gets lonely, he goes to his smartphone and rents a girlfriend. Somethings never change
(A bit late but...) The final part of the OVA takes place in the tv world because it is about abstract stuff, mainly Shouta's understanding and view on relationships. The glass stair scene is Shouta coming to terms with how he sees love as painful and frightening.
The manga is brilliant, I read all 150 something chapters! The anime had to cut out a lot of interesting storylines. I kind of wanna watch the old live action film now tho, never knew it existed
I remember when I was a teen and found a Shonen Jump in a comic store. It was one of the earlier chapters and had mild nudity, but most importantly, it had nudity. Of course I bought it and read it, being exposed to a story about a boy doing anything to save his electronic girlfriend from phasing out of this world. Thanks for bringing back memories.
Personally, I find the 1991 film a little interesting to look into. It is beyond rare to find a vhs copy of the movie (the movie does exist on this site but only in japanese and split into 5 parts). Someone did manage to rip the vhs and hardsub english subtitles into the video but the torrent for it is very close to death. _I'm really more interested in the production behind the movie than the actual movie itself_ Anyway, nice video Cinema Nippon
I felt the manga was the top of the pile. They go through three loves and all three of them they teach different things which youta learns and matures. The manga made me cry I am realist but by the time the ending came I didn't care I just wanted Ai to live. When Ai leaves with the kissing scene I with the text saying they didn't even get to tell each how they felt but thier hearts were connected on a whole different level i just broke down crying.
The artist of this manga "Video Girl Ai", has other gems. Do you think I could find his works, like this one, in the book stores? His mangas are the type of mangas you keep returning to reed it.
I’ve read the manga, and I’ve never cried so much and felt so happy ever.
Was the only manga anime i cried like never before
I cried too 😭😭😭, it wasted my time.

Except Video Girl Is is infinitely better.

I agree. It's far more authentic.

For curious people: you had to read the manga.
I found the name “Ai” fits perfectly (by coincidence) for today’s artificial intelligence.
This was great, thank you!

Thank you, had no idea there was a live action movie, a 2018 reboot and then again in 2019 (Video Girl Mai).

I've seen this around everywhere, but never watched it in any of its forms. Very interesting.
Some of them are definitely worth checking out, especially the OVA.

The 2018 one was awesome.
