    Outwitted by a pink Bontempi plastic keyboard. I had tears rolling down my face. So so so funny. Personally I would have taken it outside and blown it up and videoed the explosion in slow motion, then sent the pieces back to Bontempi asking for your money back.
    On another note, ducking has it's place as a heart beat of a piece of music in the right place. Thank you Christian for all your exuberance of all things sound samplings and all things musical with a smile you can bring me. Carry on.

    Rainger FX makes a sidechain ducking pedal that I’ve used on tour for several years. I attach a tap tempo pedal to my synth, run that into the Rainger FX pedal and it triggers a 4 on the floor side chain envelope I can keep in time with the tap tempo. It was a lifesaver, when I bought it several years ago nothing on the market could do that without either a laptop or an actually sidechained compressor (which wasn’t practical in that scenario)

    When planning my modular I heeded the advice that you can never have too many VCA's. They're useful for controlling all sorts of things with all sorts of other things. Get your drums mixed and use the output to control the amplitude of a pad. A little attenuation and hey presto, instant ducking, no outboard required. Try putting a filter somewhere in the signal chain, maybe an envelope follower. Try it with anything anywhere. A modular is a big box of audio Lego and it's up to you what you build.

    Hi Christian,
    I have one of those from batch #2. I am using it live with a juno (well, ju-06), that mainly plays pads, which I sidechain after it went through a lush reverb (Polara with lexicon algorithms). I'm very happy that it gives me the ability to do sidechaining/ducking outside of the box, as I prefer to play without a computer on stage. That being said, unfortunately, mine is one of the earlier models without the thru and without the gate in, wich would be really handy for me. Bummer. But it's still a magical box and it does a lot of the sound I am looking for. I think there is definitely a market for it, especially in electronic music

    I'm not sure I'd ever use that pedal if that's something you can relatively easily do in a DAW but this definitely gave me ideas for a future composition project so thank you for that it was fascinating.
    And it's kinda sad I know exactly what you mean when comparing Bontempi to Behringer. The brand name Bontempi always amused me because in French it essentially sounds like you're saying "well nevermind" (which we'd spell Bon tant pis) which is rather appropriate I think

Maybe also ambient guitarists, playing live with electric drum kits/percussionists etc.

  • @sweeterthananything

    i'd be most interested in having this in pedal form when playing with at least 2-3 other pedals and i'd especially try running it in parallel chains - e.g. for ducked reverb/complex delay. would also frequently want to feed it into either envelope follower effects or ones without envelope that still have good timbre change in response to dynamic change, like some fuzz/distortion/OD. to me personally, it's cool but by itself it feels incomplete - not that additional effects should have been tacked on by the manufacturer, just that it's a little closer to a utility pedal like a line selector from my perspective. ciao!

      Hello! I know we're here mainly in the eurorack/modular world - but I created this pedal first hand for live musicians without eurorack gear; for example a synth player who wants to sidechain his:her synths with the kick drum of a drummer, simply with a drum trigger...

      @sweeterthananything 2 года назад +1

      @@thepillpedal well hello! thanks for the reply. that makes perfect sense to me - my comment was almost entirely about my own imagined use cases. the most interesting thing about it for me is that you seem to be inviting collaborative effects in using a live drummer for the trigger - i know live drummer triggered sidechain ducking has been done before, but probably not so much by teenagers in a garage. i would also love to hear it used by contemporary jazz/improv group like snarky puppy whose keyboardist/whatever could really lean into the ducked groove on something more complex than 4 on the floor.

    I don't think the Pill pedal made it cooler. I know it's probably a minority opinion but I don't like the sound of heavy side chain compression / ducking. It sounds "fake" to my ears. Like it's trying too hard. Those buzz words of "cool, edgy, gritty or powerful" that are often used to describe that sound don't apply to how I perceive it. That said, it is of course a valid production technique. One that I use myself as well, albeit in moderation. And I can see some use for that pedal especially in a live environment.

      Hello, thanks for calling me silly, but I don't care since I am a heartless pedal :) ...actually: this is the great thing about me: by turning down the trigger pot, you can make a short trigger out of long bass drums... (most of the times, since also long bass drums mostly have a shorter transient in the beginning, so by setting the trigger knob accurately, you can catch just that transient)

      I, for once, am trying to produce music without a computer as a) I sit in front of it all day anyway, it's closely related to WORK = not fun. And b) I prefer turning knobs on hardware while listening to the result instead of relying onto some visual interpretation on screen. I am using a Polyend Seq though to try out stuff, sequence melodies and do arrangements. It's not as accurate as a DAW (try doing a volume swell on the Seq, good luck with that), but it's soooo quick and inuitive, pressing a bunch of buttons. I though of buying a Drawmer 1978 for compression and sidechaining, but this pedal is more compact and costs 1/3, so it seems like a very good alternative.
