It's actually about a strange but real religion/cult. It's illustrated in the video and talked about it on the commentary tracks on "Philadelphia In Love".
This is the kind of song you can not hear for 15 years then all of a sudden it pops into your head and you realize I can't remember my anniversary date but I can remember every damn lyric from about 60 DMM songs.
This literally just happened to me last month (except it was 30 years)! I listened to big lizard in its entirety for the first time in about 30 years, and totally forgot about the beach song. When it started up, it was like getting thrown back in time, and for a moment I was 14 sitting on my bed listening to my walkman... it was really nice.
I use to chat with Dave Blood before his death, we chatted on AOL, IM for 3 years. We met in a music chat room. I really enjoyed those great times, good discussions, laughs and so on. Miss you Dave!!
"Computers contain the missing key to lifes most sacred mystery. The secret of life is no secret at all, For secrets hold death and lies only build walls." How brilliant and relevant this is today. I love it!

I've decided to try and live my life like the person he is singing about. Showing people a new side of the world they never knew about and making them feel beautiful and free.
I was sitting on my couch thinking of all I could, there was a song playing I understood, So I stopped and turned it up. The rest of the world just stopped there with me, we all had a laugh and left reality. Maybe I saw too much to understand, but ever since I just don't care. The secret to me is no secret at all, I laugh instead of cry and I know that's how it goes. I just heard this on the radio, almost 20 years to the day. I started smiling then I cried, I felt beautiful and free.
Might only.have 2.4k likes, but it doesn't have one single dislike. This band was was a clearance tape I found for 3 bucks at Mother's Music in Patchogue NY. "The best of the dead milkmen". I thought, geez I didn't even know they existed let alone have a greatest hits. I bought it and all my friends and me loved it. I still come back to this well 24 years later. Thanks guys!
if I ever end up: broke, penny-less and in the gutter, I will always have the Dead Milkmen... wait, I am broke, penny-less and in the gutter... but I have the Dead Milkmen. Perhaps this iswhy I really dont care...
I noticed most of the fans who liked DM prior to this album didnt care for this song and the album because it is such a departure from what they started out doing. It was definetly an album that the record executives wanted them to make which has been said in band interviews as well. I myself love this song and the album.
@@BrokeNerfing Reminds me of the REM album "Monster". It was wildly known as the album that they had to do to stay current. I liked that album, but most REM fans hated it to death.
The cigar rocket ship prop always reminds me of MST3k. Which makes me wish that TDM made an appearance on that show. There would've been some great cameo material there.
Dead Milkmen! The primus of the punkers! I wanted to comment this on several songs on the official Deadmilkmen youtube channel but for some reason, comments are off for almost every song I have come across....Showing some love is all!
To me its a song about a lost lover. You showed me everything that I ever needed: The secret of life. We shared so many secrets and spread our love unto this universe with more torch bearers of peace to replace us. Passion never dies and neither does love; who ive become with you is still the man ill always be. Our eternity was heaven before you got to see for yourself.
I love this song! The video is perfect, makes me smile every fucking time. Here's to that somebody who made you (or will make you feel) like the alien did at some point in your life.
@ymerej33 I love those moments. Where you just laugh at life, because it all just seems so funny. Not a lot of people understand it, but once you get to the point where you do, it feels like the most simple thing there is.
A lot of DM fans have accused "Soul Rotation" of being a commercial sell-out or merely an "attempt" at artistic growth. But I think it's one of those rare "radio friendly" crossovers that were actually just as good as a band's previous works. "Soul Rotation" marks the Dead Milkmen as a band that captured two genres of rock really well: uninhibited punk rock and pop rock. In spite of the grunge onslaught that drowned them out, DM pulled off a good record because they're just damn good rockers.
So... a guy taken to another world, leaving everything behind... and a supercomputer from which is learned the answer to the ultimate question of life? Hm. Makes me wonder if Douglas Adams was a Dead Milkmen fan.
Watched this with my daughters today, ages 4 and 1. They loved it. Four-year-old thought the visuals were funny. I have high hopes for her, she's got good taste. We sing along to "Punk Rock Girl" and Tori Amos's cover of "Strange Little Girl."
Great, thoughtful song off an album that stands on its own as an alternative/funk/punk rock ROCK of an album. Some of the visuals of the video may seem a bit fruity to some, but I think the essence of this video, song, and album are right on target.
@sxephlI considering it was recorded in 1984, nothing like it was really done, I mean even Sonic Youth, didn't have it together, it's really ahead of it's time from a sonic writing stand point, and the cure was still experimental at this time too.
i love their half-assed guitar solos and how it goes over the vocals. like the band themselves, this is a half-assed video to a song that sounds silly but says more about life screw walt disney-owned hollywood records for not giving them the rights back to their own records. dave blood, you are missed. and @iHaveGeekStinkBreath, you are totally right they should've played this at the funeral.
This song is simplistic . overly basic. Rides on its hook and is repetative. This song is brilliant. Overly engaging . rides on its insight and the life experiences of those who dont have such great lives and find it hard to just exist amongst the hurd . I love this song.

Right there with you!
Almost 62 here. They probably saved my life and I don't know it.
I'm 45 & way cooler because i had older kids like you around.
I love this song but every time I listen to this I feel some sort of loneliness that I can't explain.
That makes sense to me, I take it as a song about drug use and depression. Mostly because of the second to last stanza.
It's actually about a strange but real religion/cult. It's illustrated in the video and talked about it on the commentary tracks on "Philadelphia In Love".
I also feel sad when I hear this song, no idea why. Maybe it's the melody, maybe what happened in my life at the time. Still, I love it!
Ikr. This song is beautiful.
So many of their songs do that to me

This is easily one of my favorite Dead Milkmen songs. I like Rodney Anonymous, but I really like Joe Jack Talcum.
