Exactly my point. He doesn't have to sacrifice the rook. Queen takes pawn and following the other check position gives him the same checkmate position at last. Don't know what's the fuss about sacrificing the roooooook?
Thought iwas the only one
Because if he didn't sacrifice the rook, there would be no queen b1 mate cause knight blocks and magnus would be down a bishop and a knight. It's quite simple really.

The sequence is identical with or without the rook sacrifice. This video was misleading.
@@mrgreen8598 I believe it was done in case the mate was to be made thru the Queen at b2. If it was mate with QB2, the white N would have prevented the mate.
The rook sac was a necessary insurance to allow the bigger play, which was the N trap. People say MC missed the mate, and yes he did but that mate was too boring compared to what he did.
Idk what this man did to MC for him to do that, but this play is one for the books (if it isn't already).
@@mrgreen8598nope, this is the normal sequence: Qxb3#, Ke1, Nc2#, Rxc2, Qb1#, Rc1. Then the final move is what makes the difference, if the rook sacrifice happens, then the knight is no longer guarding c1, so it would be Qxc1##, but if the rook sacrifice doesnt happen, then it is Qxc1, Nxc1

Chess players are people who literally see into the future. They’re calculating almost every possible move not only they can make but anything you can respond with. The best chess players are those who can maneuver around the board making you think you have the upper hand, all in the while they’ve seen all those possibilities and made you fall into their trap.

@@fraiserfurner1504 u cant castle once u move your king, so once your king moves or the rook moves from its starting square, the king and rook cant switch places
"Fisher-random-smother-mate"? This sounds like a move I am decades beyond understanding.
Smother mate : that combo where you sac the queen to checkmate with a knight.
Fischer Random: Bobby Fischer said that as chess starts with a basic position - it will always have particular openings. So....... Let's start with a random position everytime, so we can force the players to actually think & not work off of experience/muscle memory.
This was a smother mater out of a random starting setup.
You cannot prepare for a random start setup
@@Ak-pr1wg Your explanation isn't quiet precise / can be missinterpreted.
A smothered mate doesn't require one to sac a queen, it's simply a checkmate delivered by a knight in which the mated king is unable to move because it is mostly (or completely) surrounded by its own pieces.
Fisher random chess (also known as Chess960) does start from a random position, but it's not an arbitrary one, i.e. there is a set of 960 predefined starting positions. These 960 variations come from shuffling the pieces from white's first rank (following a few rules) and mirroring that position for black.
Also it's not entirely true that one can't prepare for a random starting setup. Yes, you obviously won't be able to plan exact moves, but you will be able to develop a few strategies depending on how the pieces are positioned relative to each other, but I agree that it's definetly much less of an aid than for normal chess.
@@corex6109 i am trying to explain it to someone who doesn't know. You who understand this, can skip. Sorry i can't invest so much time on a RUclips comment.
@@Ak-pr1wg Because they don't know I am trying to inform you about how they can easily misinterpret your comment.
Where's the point in explaining something if you do it poorly. From your explanation alone OP might think a smothered mate means sacking a queen to deliver a checkmate, when in reality it has nothing to do with the queen at all.
If you want to explain someone how a certain program works you don't tell them "it has something to do with electricity", do you?

The enemy either has to sacrifice his queen or loose the match
Dear Lord, I had to watch this half a dozen times and pause another half a dozen to figure out wtf is going on, LMAO
so what happened?
@@autumnsnows he sacrificed a bishop to make room for his rook and queen. He then sacrificed his rook to distract the opponent's knight. He then used the queen to attack the king, and with a combination of moves forces the opponent's king to get trapped by his own pieces by sacrificing his queen and then attacks the king with his knight, meaning checkmate since the king can't go anywhere and it's in check.
@@miyamotomusashi6450I can’t see why sac the rook? Can’t the same mate be done without it?
@@VintageMord Because the white rook can take the black knight, if the black queen tries to check the king the white rook can just go back to the back row to protect the king but only if it is protected by the white knight.

He sees the mate in 7 while I can't even get a mate in one 😭😭
The crazy part was the rook sac was him actually missing mate in 6. The smothered mate sequence from the first Queen check doesn't change whether or not that rook, pawn, or knight were on their original squares.
It's like walking down the street and you've just been convicted of a prime you didn't know you did, and now you realise how can I get revenge while it's game over.
Bro just boxed him
The rook sacrifice to free the knight just in case enemy rook takes is amazing. It could have prevented a back rank scenario
can u explain further? idont get why that rook sacrifice was nessescary
@@apelnam because there's an alternative scenario when the king is checked by the black knight instead of moving the king away, rook could take and the best move for white is to move queen to backrank check, rook is the only way to defend, queen takes rook and mate. That scenario could be the only way white could have survived if white knight stayed instead of taking the rook. So Magnus eliminated that possibility before it became a reality
Why he needs to sacrifice the rook when he can directly check the king using queen?
I got it. THANKYOU FOR THAT INFO!
