Really? I thought everyone who remembered this game from the drop was horrified when they finally played the game that I remember as the first preorder game in history. My folks had preordered it for me, for Easter. I remember calling the fruit “Bennies,” when I first saw them.

Nostalgia glasses can work both ways, I think. I actually remember it as worse. Either way, “hell of a drug” is spot on, JB.

@@mechamania I remember seeing and playing it for the first time and being really surprised at how much different it looked, but also kinda accepted that most Atari games looked different from the arcade. But I was also 5 at the time and was happy to play it. About a year or so later I got to play Ms. Pac man and that was much much better.

As much as people rag on this version, 5 year old me was over the moon when I came home from school and my Mom and Dad had gone out and used their first joint credit card to buy me an Atari VCS, Pac-Man and Space Invaders on their day off. Dad had already hooked it up to the TV but had only checked to make sure it was hooked up correctly and hadn't plugged a single cart into it until I got home. Those two games as well as the pack in Combat were like opening an entire new world for me. In my eyes, they were as good as the games I kept bugging them for quarters to play everytime we went out. We didn't turn the console off until well after 3 am and they called me in sick that day from going to school. As soon as I woke up, we were right back at it. Looking back, I realize how much they spent that day just to surprise me and make me happy. The sounds of this game take me back to that Tim over 40 years ago and since my mom is gone now, those are the little things that are priceless, so this game with always be God-tier for me for that reason. I think I'm going to find my 7800 (they upgraded for me lol)in my storage building, dig out my games for it, take it to my Dad and battle him in our favorite two player game, Video Olympics. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

The first TV I ever owned was black and white. I think was 10, so 1985ish. It had a "remote" that was actually wired to the TV, it had channel up and down and when you pushed it the channel knob still turned with a loud click. I remember watching Giligans Island and the Jack Benny show on it as well as playing my Atari 2600 on it. Good times.

I played this so much as an 80s kid. I loved using this trick that would make Pac Man slide up and down the middle of the screen, and then try to do only that while avoiding ghosts. I've never seen anyone on the Internet talk about it (though I haven't looked very hard).

@@penismightier9278 Yup, later games were really showing that there was still a lot to push from that console.
Atari made very future proof consoles, until Jack Tramiel. One can only guess what the 7200 could have been if it had included that new sound chip they were making, and if it wasn't "marketed far under it's market price as Jack wanted to get rid of it".

I still have a black-and-white television. It's one of those Radio Shack Genexxa (the fancier store brand they came up with in the 1990s to replace "Realistic") TV/Radio combos with a 7" screen. I don't actually use it for anything anymore since most NTSC transmissions in Canada (except for some rural repeater stations and very local indie stations) were shut down a decade ago, it doesn't even have composite inputs, so I can't use it for retro gaming (well, unless I wanted to play via RF), and I have better ways of listening to the radio including my CD Walkman that's also a radio, but I still keep it on my nightstand because I find it to be a comforting presence. For bedroom TVs, I actually found I prefer the ambience of black-and-white over colour.

When I got my VCS back in the day, Atari had started including Pac-Man as a throw-in with the console, so since the game was free, I don't dislike it. However, I cannot imagine the disappointment for someone who begged their parents for this game as a Christmas gift.

I actually always thought ET got a bad rap, compared to this port. At least Pac-Man had a template to work with-and people had specific expectations for it-but with ET, it was all hype and no good idea about how bad movie tie-inn games could be, even though Spielberg saidE.T. were a film that “would never be on cable or VHS,” because it was a movie so incredible it couldn’t be rightly experienced outside a theater. That lasted one round of theater re-release.

    Try 1990 here in Ireland! 😯😂😀🤘 ...
Indeed I remember us only buying a colour TV around 88 and several of my cousins replacing their black and white sitting room TV's in the late 80's and early 90's, while indeed many were still using black and white TVs as secondary/bedroom TVs in the early 90's...
Meanwhile by 2002 when I doubt many people were still actually using black and white TVs, that was the last year that you could buy a black and white TV licence here rather than a full colour one! 😯😂😀🤘 .

I know this game gets plenty of flak for being a poor and disappointing conversion, but I have a huge amount of nostalgia for it. When it came out I had never played the arcade game, so didn't have a point of comparison and didn't experience any disappoinment as a result. The sound effects for this game will forever be burned into my brain.
