- Listen to a professional voice-over processing chain made of only Universal Audio UAD Plugins, including the Massenburg Design Works UAD MDWEQ5-5B, The UAD AMS Neve DFC Channel Strip, and the UAD Avalon VT-747sp Channel Strip. In this video, I discuss the benefits of using all UAD plugins for a voice-over chain. Furthermore, I describe the reasons for the plugin order and how to include a preamp using the Unisson position to get my preferred sound from the Universal Audio plugins. This video features voice-over audio from a client who is a professional actor and voice-over artist from the Netherlands.

Thanks Lenny, great video.
This is a terrific demonstration of voice processing. Thanks for the step-by-step demo. I really could hear each and every step in the process.
Great job Lenny! Love the reveal when you turn off the bypass - super additive sound quality.
Great vid. Sounds great.
Man, that sounds nice. You have a great ear. I so want that VT-737sp. I loved the hardware version back in the day. Black panel all the way.
Three instances of EQ? Respectfully, Lenny, why not do it all in one?
@colindayo, you make a good point. A "good" processed voice sound can be achieved in many ways. This was how I decided to do it with these particular UA plugins. You'll notice that most of the EQ fixing was done with the first EQ. Then, except for one band, the second EQ is doing lighter sweetening (of the EQ-corrected sound from the Massenburg). Finally, the Avalon EQ is extremely minimal. I hope that helps you understand my thought processes for this.
Lenny, where do you like to do repair work, like mouth de-clicking and the like, in the processing chain?
Hi Rob. Great question. I find myself placing the RX work in either spot (before or after the processing). I find that some situations sound better in front, others at the end. I'd say try both and whichever sounds best is the right move. I can't find an argument for leaning to one specific side. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you for the vid, very helpful. I think I’m after a hardware based plugin/dsp to get the best sound I can for client streaming and Zoom. Is your client taking the processing you’ve done and running it real-time in the Apollo?
Yes, that is exactly the intent.
can you make a video with the uad manley voxbox? Thx
Yes! It's on my list.
Excellent presentation Lenny. I have a 737 in hardware form.......Interesting to see your process, and just wondered if you thought I should ONLY use my 737 preamp during initial recordings and apply the compression afterwards, at the end of the chain?
Here's my suggestion. I believe your line of thought is correct. You could absolutely use (only) the 737's preamp during the initial recording. Personally, I'd go a step further. I wouldn't use any preamp (in the unison position) when recording. I only use the clean Apollo preamp channel with no plugins. Then I add the preamp and effects in post-production. However, this is only my opinion.
Thanks Lenny 🙏🏻
Buddy, what does it mean to use any plugin in the "UNISON POSITION"?
Great video!
Good question. Within the Universal Audio Apollo series of audio interfaces, there is a specific plugin modeling offered called Unison. You can read more about it here: help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/212131903-Quick-Tip-Using-Unison-with-Apollo-Interfaces
I just got the Apollo Twin (learning ever so slowly) - are there any other plugin's your recommend for VO/Demo creation purposes? I have the Avalon and the Manley Voxbox so far, I need to pick others that came free but have no idea where to start. lol
The truth is that you should learn how to use EQ and compression. Then you'll find the plugins that you like best. I think it's more about know-how, than a particular plugin. You need to learn to paint. Plugins are like paint brushes. I'd suggest you take this course: www.lennyb.com/eq-fundamentals-for-voice
@@HeyLennyB awesome. Thanks. I actually purchased it and I’m making my way through it. Great content and learning a lot.
The UAD C-Suite C-Vox™ Noise & Ambience Reduction is a very good one for voiceover recording!
Hi Lenny, would you stay away from audio interfaces that get very hot temperature wise? The new Neumann 48MT is said to be like a heater. The sound is great, but the hot temperature is a concern. It would be great to hear your thoughts.
I don't have any experience with that unit (yet). I have yet to receive a submission with it used, and I don't own one. I do know that heat is not a friend to electronics. However, I don't know if I'd write it off due to the heat. I need to get my hands on one soon.
Thanks Lenny. It would be great to get your feedback on this for voice over. @@HeyLennyB
I really love your work, but I think the Avalon is so overrated; any way you made it shine on his voice. Being someone who owns almost all the UAD's Unison Preamps, I really prefer the Neve 1084, Voxbox, V76 and lately discovering the charms of the Helios Type 69 on the opposite side of the radar so underrated. What do you think about substractive EQ, then compression and finally additive EQ for VO job?
Hi @Tav_cr, that is how I order my VO chains most of the time. I think your process is on point. I sometimes follow that with another compressor (Opto).
Can I hire you to build me a setup as well? :D
Yes, you can. First, you need to send me a raw recording. Please follow the three steps on this page: www.lennyb.com/get-your-voice-processed-submission-form
