I agree with Samuel Jackson about the NAACP's handling of Blaxploitation. People should be critical of media- especially media that represents them. But to cancel a whole genre where Black people are finally getting leading roles, and leadership roles behind the camera, without funding or supporting other Black filmmakers is crazy! A lot of people, even today, have that "This isn't catering to me so its bad." mindset and i hate it!
This👏👏👏 It seems people want media that perfectly represent their views, ideals or even fantasies of life they want to project themselves into and anytime artists dare to be different, to explore their imagination and creative possibilities people hate just because "they dont see themselves in it".
They did the same with amos and andy saw some shows on youvtube that show was hilarious no more offensive then i love lucy or honeymooners and they also help get rid of beulah which was a black version of hazel both shows pre dated 1954 and its not like there was much black tv at the time.
Its easier to tear something down than build.. Sam Jackson is 100% right.
I will always remember when my dad met her at a library tour she did. I never saw my dad blushed so hard like a teenager boy. She gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Every guy there envy him that day.
Wow what a cool story!!
That rules
I’m envious of him now.
Pam grier is beautiful but bernadette the daughter on good times is definitely easily more beautiful!!! She's still beautiful and fine!!!
Aww how cute 🥰
The first Black woman who was an action star 🫶🏾🫶🏾
First woman period 🎉🎉
She’s the first female action star period
She’s the first action star.
The reason why I took up acting and gymnastics- I wanted to do all my own stunts like Jackie did 😭👏🏽
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 no she isn't, she isn't even close.
I love Pam so much it's amazing! Her characters were always so badass and she inspired me to be confident in myself at a young age. I still rewatch her moves every now and then!
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 she’s not “old and fat” she aged beautifully and is still very gorgeous
@@hurtinggoddess326 I still love me some Pam G!
@@grandwazoo870 who doesn’t 😁
@@hurtinggoddess326t to mention doesn’t she suffer from cancer?
EDIT - I’m not “coming for you” just asking. Cause I believe that cancer can cause weight fluctuations.
@@Gemini053 I never knew she had/has cancer but she still looks fantastic
Back when 'Jackie Brown' was released, I went to see it in the cinema with a couple of friends I (as a queer, 20 something white, Welsh guy) watched the opening scene. When I saw Pam Grier gliding along on the traveletor to 'Across 110th Street', so poised, so elegant, so kick-ass, yet so relatable. I was transfixed, it is almost like I felt like I wanted to BE her. From start to finish, watching this film, she was the epitome of a strong female. I remember coming out of the cinema and literally walking down the street (with that track in my head) in time to the music, holding my head high. She became a MAJOR inspiration to me from that moment. After seeing her in interviews and learning more about her in the intervening years, it made me understand that it was not only the character of Jackie Brown who inspired me, but the woman behind her, a woman who is even more courageous, principled and compassionate.
Wow I love this! What an incredible story, thank you for sharing 💖
I first saw her in the L Word and loved her character. I ended up finding out about Foxy Brown and blacksplotation films that completely changed the way I saw cinema
I’m surprised there was no mention of the L Word in this video. If anything, Pam Grier’s inclusion in that series is an homage to her embodiment of sexual expression throughout her career.
It's shameful that Pam Grier was not considered for the Oscar for "Jackie Brown."
Great video!
Love seeing Pam’s legacy get the recognition it deserves.
Pam Grier is an icon. When I was a teen I had my first introduction to her was when she played Kit Porter on The L Word. I’m kinda surprised it wasn’t mentioned because she was a main character for the entire run of the show. She was amazing in the L Word and was a vocal ally to the lgbtqia community. Her character was a famous musician in the 70s and Pam performs numerous songs on the show. She is a triple threat.
I can’t think of another female action star on the level of Pam Grier. She is the epitome of cool, but she is also incredibly smart, driven and talented. She has led such an interesting, accomplished life and is an amazing role model for women and girls. I’m definitely going to check out her book.
I wondered as to the omission too
She should have gotten an Oscar nomination for Jackie Brown.
I hate that respectability politics set Black Hollywood and black film creativity back so much. Black people should be allowed to fully express ourselves in all facets of have we are. Now we are at a stagnate in many ways and roles of representation.
she aged beautifully!!
I will say the discussion around the "exploitation" label is interesting but can often miss that it was a bigger thing within cinema. Exploitation cinema is a genre itself with subgenres, you had carsploitation, sexploitation etc. These were exploiting the popularity of the topic, so these films were made quick and on the cheap to for a guaranteed profit. Although I get the title of blacksploitation sounds really bad but there's something to say of a genre of films which not only starred black actors but black producers, writers and directors. Something that we still don't see all that much these days either. I can understand the concerns around stereotypes within the films but it would have been good to see black led films in a very whitewashed market at that time.
Pam Grier is just the best. I fell for her in 1995 when I was 19, looking for something to rent at a video store, spotting the Coffy VHS box. That started me down a rabbit hole of fantastic movies. Then to have Jackie Brown come out a couple years later? Absolute perfection.
And then to learn about her & her life. She's even more impressive than the characters she played.
Great video. Thanks.
I discovered her on the L-word and fell head over heels for her. Then i saw her in other procedural shows and Jackie Brown and her earlier films. One of the most beautiful women of all time and a true icon.
I hope you never stop making videos! You talk about similar topics as other female youtubers but you have a unique spin on the opinions they also present. Everytime I watch one of your videos I feel like I'm learning something new.❤
Aw wow thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying, and that you feel like you’re gaining something because those are always the video essayists I enjoy the most as well!💖☺️
Thank you, I've been waiting for someone to do a video on Pam Grier!!!!❤ When female actions stars are talked about her name isn't usually brought up,which is weird because she is one of the first. I've never seen anyone like her. She was runnin dudes over with cars and airplanes 💀😂
Loool too true! And pulling guns from her Afro! Truly the embodiment of badass.
Pam Grier is an bonafide icon and legend, shes intelligence, grace, integrity, and beauty🤎beautiful video :)
I agree but bernadette the daughter on good times is definitely easily more beautiful than pam grier!!!
Always stunned by her beauty over the years. Never read or saw her interviews, which demonstrate her eloquence.
Pam grier is beautiful but the daughter in good times is definitely easily more beautiful than pam grier!!!
Pam is a top tier human, my mom grew up next to her in Denver and every anecdote from that time is 100pct positive
Finally! She's so amazing, beautiful, and talented. Thank you for the great video about her, she deserves this and more.
I like Pam Grier's citate that "A woman could be lady and still defend herself". What, unfortunately, many today "progressive" producers miss. As a woman myself, I don't want to see another "strong female character" made up poorly just for tokenism and such characters like these being empty and having nothing for female audience to relate to. I want to have strong female characters not being made like the caricature of themselves, being very relatable and compassionate, no matter the appearance they have, like Jackie Brown or Sarah Connor.
Pam was the 1st RIOTGRRRLL!!!
She was also a talented actress!!!
This video is sooo rad!!!
Talking about the 2 battles she had! Sexism and racism! She smashed it!
Grier, one of the most beautiful Women of all time, period!
A one in a 100 Million Beauty 😍🥰🥰
Pam Grier never gets enough credit for paving the way for action heroines
Pam Grier was and will always be an icon to many generations to come!
Thank you for creating this video about Pam. I love Pam. People have compared me to her because I wear a afro.
Love Pam Grier!!! Such an inspiration. I felt she really kept true to herself and what she wanted out of life. I am so mind blown at Freddie Prince Jr i had no idea that happened to his dad!
She is just as much of a badass in real life. Such a cool person I was in awe of. Even more so after what she said to me when Ice Cube was disrespectful to her.
Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino movie. It has the most badass women character of all time, with Ripley being on par.
Omg im so glad there's finally a video dissecting about her career and performance. I personally enjoyed her films and was really hoping there's a video discussing about her❤
Never knew she lived in Swindon and was treated well by the locals. Pretty cool
That one surprised me too
I absolutely loved Jackie Brown, and I love that I got introduced to that amazing woman and actor Pam :)
Even in Australia we had "Exploitation" movies. Using "street smart" or "urban myths" as part of a modern story-line. The US and UK did the same too. I remember Cleopatra Jones. It was an era when governments went outside the big studios and promoted the "new wave" of young creators. It was so bad, it was good. MAD MAX is Australia's contribution to that era.
Very nice video - I knew of her iconic role in Blaxploitation, but it hadn't occurred to me the niche she was filling as a woman - it really says something about our culture's treatment of women - and no other female action stars before, nor for decades afterward (tho a case could be made that Carol Clover's Final Girl served part of that function by default) - when you had so many female action stars in India, Indonesia, East Asia, supposedly more patriarchal cultures - I'd also be curious to hear about the Black New Wave cinema that blossomed in the 90s
- interesting how these people in the video respond to the label "Exploitation", when Roger Corman is spoken of now as the father of New Hollywood - Tarantino embraces the term, even from a moral standpoint, saying these types of films didn't pull their punches (I think Clover said something similar)
- I think there's something very direct and formulaic about Exploitation cinema that ties to melodrama itself, maybe in a more distilled, spiced up form - I'd love to see Tarantino and Grier discuss that term - anyway, thanks for your rich treatment of Grier in relation to that fascinating context -
Its crazy to me that the NAACP had a hand in killing this subgenre of black cinema even though all the black players did not view it as exploitation, and were proud of their work and happy to be making a living. Yet they didn't have a hand in producing a film about black people that they thought was representative. It sounds so backwards to me. Be broke, but hey, at least you're not being "exploited" and hurting our feelings. 😑
They try to do the same for hip hop in the early 90s.
She is simply the best, all round actress. With look and acting. Love her.
She is intelligent, witty, and memorising! No wonder she rose to the top.
I love Pam Grier! So Happy to see her getting some attention, awesome vid!!
She could’ve been a model I stg
So pretty 🔥
Very well made video, never heard of her! It’s great to hear about strong black
woman rising in media. She seems like a great woman and it’s so sad to hear of the bad things that happened to her but she rise up after them ❤
I love her so much, grew up watching her films.
Excellent!❤ I adore this!!! I even cried at the end
Your video essays are amazing. Keep up the good work 🎉❤
Pam is one of my all-time faves! Thank you for talking about her!❤
I'm about halfway through, right now. Wonderful video, so far! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thanks foe covering this, definitely going to check out some pam gier films!
I haven’t finished this video yet but I’m half way through and I love it!!
Omg thank you for the amazing video!!! I’ve never really been a cinema buff, but since discovering your channel I have so many films I want to see!
I'm so obsessed with your channel😭it's become my comfort place
That was a great video, thank you for your work.
She is my inspiration. Thank u for this ❤
I first saw her on Law and Order SVU and she was just amazing.
You did such a good job making this mini documentary. Known about Pam Grier my whole life and there were numerous details in your video I didn't know. I also really enjoyed the commentary you selected from Tarantino, Bell Hooks, and Afeni Shakur. THANK YOU
This was amazing to watch! I discovered Pam through Foxy Brown in the 80s and was hung struck by how confident and badass she was. Watching this has somewhat made me realize how subconsciously I'd yearned for her empowering characteristics in every woman.
Love Pam! We just watched Jackie Brown in my movie club and we fell in love with her again. I agree she definitely made an impact!
Just when I think I’m gonna cancel my youtube premium subscription, I find a video like this, and the entire website is redeemed. Just excellent. I’m looking forward to watching a bunch of Grier movies and checking out your other videos. Thanks!
Answer: She's fine as hell.
Awesome Documentary! If there is one thing I take away from this is the mental fortitude Pam carries and has displayed in Media for Decades(Its astonishing, especially now knowing of the trauma she's been through!)Also how powerful women during a in her family has played an instrumental role in her development. It's the little things/observations that can take someone a long way!
I could go on and on but I digress- Well done!
Definitely Subscribing!❤
This is beautiful---Pam Grier has always been one of my favorite stars. I love your point about the funk and soul music key to the Blaxploitation genre, connected with Pam's comment about the celebratory aspects of 70s culture. 🧡
she is so cool, thank you for this series I love learning about all these it girls!!
Dude. This popped up on my RUclips Recommendations right on time. You made this really well. Thank you very much for your work.
I’m glad you enjoyed!! Thanks for watching ☺️
This woman is an ICON. That time was iconic. I wonder where we would be if this would’ve kept going.
Pam is my hero!!! I’m over here struggling with a difficult decision right now and this must be a sign
This is freaking weird. I was thinking this morning about how Pam Grier hasn't really aged. Honestly, it's almost like the older she gets the better she looks.
Beautiful. Thanks for this
She has had a fascinating life
pam was done was SOOOO dirty in these films but she was also the shit everytime!! Love her character roles
Amazing video, I really loved this one!!
Grier is such an inspiration. As a person. As a bipoc person. As an actress. As a sexualized actress... And the roles she played and immortalized on screen 🥰
Powerful. Dignified. Active (as apposed to passive) and Beautiful. Gorgeous. 🥰
she's a big part of why I am who I am today.
Queens Pam Grier, Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, Tina Turner and Grace Jones and their amazing works are what kept me going through horrible (often racist/colorist) moments. Hail the Queens 🙌🏿
I APPRECIATE THIS....QUEEN U DONE UR HOMEWORK...🏆👸🏾💞
Well researched. I lived this period and saw pretty much all these films. Pam Grier was right up there with Jim Brown and Fred Williamson as the top tier black action starts.
this is such a fire video essay🔥🔥🔥
This was an awesome video! Well edited, great storytelling. You're doing great, and I hope you make a documentary someday that wins you all the awards that you deserve.
She was really beautiful.
Megan (Thee Stallion) looks so much like her and Pam is always showin love to Meg. Black Women
You did an amazing job 💗💗
All I can say is thank you. She has always been my role model. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I met Ms Grier sometime ago in Shoprite in Somerset NJ she was checking out in line in front of me and signed my receipt as she was in a play at crossroad theater in New Brunswick NJ and she was so about it and yes I still have her autograph
As a non POC woman you did Pam a justice with this minidoc gf! Good job 👏🏽🤎
Pam is the reason why I wanted to be an actress and made sure I was staunch enough to handle my own stunts- like her I am mixed several ways too, but people only see black if you’re black at all.
It can be extremely minimising to one’s identity! But I loved that she always corrected the social typecasting in interviews 🤎
Thankyou Pam, I am a bad ass b*tch because of you! And Thankyou to my white passing Mama for making sure I had someone exactly like me to reference as a teenager- Pam, Kelis and Ertha were my holy trinity as a kid 🫀
She has two black parents, she isn't mixed.
@@FeiTheVillain Verbatim; Grier said she is of mixed ancestry, namely of African American, Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino, and Cheyenne heritage.
Dumbass.
@@FeiTheVillain Also, educate yourself.
Africa is a continent, African American itself is a derivative of mainly the West Coast. Unless your Folks are first cousins you are mixed.
Thats like saying someone with a Congolese Mother and a Guyanese Father is just African- frankly it’s politically incorrect. Black people can be mixed too- my Halfcast Father is darkskinned, being a internet Karen doesnt make for reputable knowledge sweetheart.
@@dejalationsYou ain’t have to eat them up like that Jesus Christ! 😂
fantastic video on an absolute icon! well done.
This video made me smile the whole time watching it. Pam is such a queen 👑
I wish I had a fraction of her strength, she's amazing.
Great video!!
Omg Ive been watching a lot of Pam Griers movies, and i felt like she's not really talked about a lot. Great video 👍
I’m surprised “Scream, Blacula, Scream” wasn’t mentioned in this video. That was one of her first roles.
Wow this video is incredible inspiring!
Hey I love your videos. Could you do one on either Dianah Carroll, or Brenda Sykes
I loved her in Jackie Brown and The "L" Word!
Nice video thank you
Such a good video!
Her generosity! Such a legacy ❤😭
Thanks for putting this together it was insightful af. Pam Grier is truly an Icon in her own right, but I do want to point out that you confused Bell Hooks with Alice Walker.
Thank you for the write up. Always my hero, even before experiencing her real personality and history. I used to be a fan of Kareem, now he just strikes me as uneducated and dependent. You go, Pam!
Really like your essays so far. Love how you work with the sources. Videos are educational and entertaining at the same time. Subscribed
She's probably the main reason i was attracted to older women
Bless Pam! I love her and her mentality and what she provided for us! however i do disagree that blaxplotation was revolutionary or wholly good. Ask any guy (like the guy who said she was a ‘hero’) when they talk about her they always mention her body and how sexy she was. She was ultimately non threatening as she catered to men perfectly, had she not been conventionally attractive and modest while beating up men THEN she wouldve been yhe ‘threat’ she thought she was.
She was ultimately catering to men and was apart of the patriarchal clog. With that being said, no doubt people would see the good in it and women will be happy seeing a lady kick ass!
That’s mostly due to the fact that Western society had weird hang ups around nudity and sees the human body as a mysterious sexual thing rather than what it is. A body. And I personally still feel like she’s a very dangerous adversary to have because when you go up against someone who knows themselves as well as their body and who isn’t afraid to use their body to get what they want? It’s a whole other ballgame because they don’t have the traditional weaknesses that other people might have.
EDIT - I’m not saying that your wrong in what your saying because everyone noticed her sexiness before they even thought to pay attention to her character.
Damn I watched coffy and foxy brown as a kid for 4 years straight. Was IN LOVE with this woman as a 12 year old kid in the the 90’s. Thank god for vhs
Pam was maybe my first crush and almost certainly the cause of my love for black women.
An all-time classic beauty.
I love Pam Grier one of the most GORGEOUS WOMEN I’d ever seen and still GORGEOUS THANK YOU FOR KEEP ENTERTAINING US ! You’re a Brilliant and Talented and Very Very PRETTY YOUNG!! LADY!! GOD BLESS YOU!❤❤❤
