Only a reptile depending on who you ask, but there are quite a few parrots that keepers brought back from extinction. Blue Spix macaws were just reintroduced to the wild in Brazil after being declared extinct, and they were saved by entirely by private collections and animals donated from private collections to zoos.
An awful lot of parrot species have also been and are directly being influenced by illegal collection for the pet trade. Governments and buyers need to actually look at where they are getting their animals from.
Mexican here! Axolotls are pretty difficult to reintroduce to the wild, because as you mentioned there are invasive species and pollution in the lake of Xochimilco, also some people capture them from the wild and sell them illegally. Although there are lots of wild centers that are specialized in preservation of them, there hasn’t been a way to prevent them from dying in the wild. They are also so important in medical research!
Please do an updated axolotl video. I plan to get my daughter an axolotl for Christmas. We live in MN and utilize our basement so they'd have a great environment with us. I have done a lot of research but I would love to hear your opinions and advice on diet, lighting and noise tolerance.
Oh my gosh I love this idea! Also I totally think you should do a video on elder reptiles or five ways to care for them or something like that there’s not a lot of how to videos for old reptiles
Im from México i used to live with my parent just 2 blocks away from a canal and a mini lake and i remember there where people who sell axolotes to the tourist who went to the canals and flowers markets and súper cheap if i had to said there where from 2-5 dolars each my brother even had one for a couple of years is just sad now to remember that and realize we did that, now in mexico they love them and there is a lot in interest to save them
I love how the whole video Diamond just starts climbing around, and then when he gets put back the utter confusion on his face is visible and then he tries again 🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
This was a wonderful and informative video! I did not even know about the Crested Gecko story so that was an interesting fact. If you ever plan on doing a part two to this or maybe a spin on this idea, there are a lot of chameleons from Madagascar that are endangered, as well as several species of island tortoises and even species such as the Burmese python are under threat.
I wanna see a in depth care guide for electric blues, I have one but there isn’t many videos on them and would love to see some more of them. I love my little dude, he’s so full of personality and fun to watch
I used to have a breeding pair of L williamsi (electric blue day geckos) a few years ago. They were very productive and I am imcredibly proud of providing some captive bred animals to the hobby! The most fun lizards Ive ever owned, and one day I hope to own a pair again at some point!
Ive read somewhere that what we keep as axolotls are now a different species then the ones in the wilds, and that if we released them back into their natural lakes they could survive.
Yeah this was a great video, I love the way you explain things, you make it really easy for people to learn and actually understand what you're trying to get across. Off topic but when I was a kid I used to have a desert spiny lizard that had crazy rainbow colors all over it's chest and I remember the lady said I wouldn't ever really be able to handle it (not sure if it was male or female) but it would sit on my desk beside me while I was doing homework and after a while it would let me pet it without freaking out and the way they just look at you is crazy, I wish I knew what was going through their brains lol, sorry that was a lot

great video adam! i’m a long time viewer, reptile content like yours is my guilty pleasure. actually an obsession lol. even tho i never plan on getting a reptile 😂 i love looking at them but i would have a very hard time picking any up
If you check out Creatures of Nightshade, they did a 2-year experiment on diet vs condition of Dragon Snakes and discovered that the ones fed exclusively on tadpoles and frogs had the best condition. The more fish included in the diet, the worse the condition of the snakes. What cool creatures these are, they hunt their food in water. If you have never checked out the site you should as long as you aren't squeamish about the snakes eating live prey. Some animals need to do this.

Truly you must realize there are only about 100 companies in the US responsible for most of our pollution, as well as India and China who produce wayyyyy more pollution than the US and people like you and I
Naturally, species do die out. 99% of all species thst have existed are extinct, its the natural process of survival. THAT BEING SAID, HUMANS SHOULD NOT BE AN UNNATURAL FORCE DRIVING EXTINCTION
Hey Wicken! First off, I know this is totally not related to the video. BUT! I wanted to ask you a question, so I just found your most recent video and am posting it here. What are your thoughts on keeping a wild-caught gecko? There's a tiny mediterranean house gecko outside of my apartment that I would love to capture and keep in a 10 gal bioactive terrarium I have set up. On Reddit though, they're all recommending against keeping wild-caught geckos. If it's just the shorter lifespan, I don't mind, but are there other considerations too? Like could it ruin the bioactive terrarium? Thanks a lot!
The electric blues are funny because in captivity they very prolific breeders, as opposed to in the wild where they’re only found on a particular species of tree, I think there’s a species of phelsuma that’s the same way, they very prolific inside of this one area, but as soon as you go outside of that area they are nowhere to be found Also, electric blues are no longer imported and haven’t been for awhile and earless monitors are almost nonexistent in the pet trade, despite how easy they are to breed once setup correctly
Great video! I believe humanity’s desire to seek, learn and explore should not be suppressed, but encouraged responsibly. When we permanently encroach on an animal’s ecosystem (which should be discouraged) I believe it is our responsibility to protect those species. Maybe captive breeding gives us the time we need to figure out how to live harmoniously with said species. All that to say, i enjoyed the video and You earned another subscriber. Thank you sir.
There's a species of screw pine on new caledonia too. I was looking into trying to keep members of the pandanus family as house plants to see if I could do some at home conservation with plants
I love these educational videos. My 8 year old son really wants an axolotl so an updated care guide would be awesome! Then I have to find room to add it to our collection.
Awesome video, I would absolutely love 50 more Axolotl videos please lol. Axolotls are great, wouldn't personally have one but awesome see people who can have them show them off.
Very good video! Love it! I watch every upload. You should do another top 5/10 arboreal lizards/snake if you think people would watch it. Either way love the videos! Keep up the good work!
Also you may not see this but question. I have a 120 gallon (4x2x2) that my bearded dragon is in. He Is old so but he's still healthy and happy. But once he passes what other lizards would do well in the 120?
Very interesting Adam. Axolotyls seem to be ramping up in popularity again. The Dragon Snake and last lizard, forgot it’s name, we’re really cool. Never heard of them before. Thanks for the interesting content!❤
The Abronia could also be on the list, I think. There was an "Animals at home" video I watched a while back talking about them and how captive breeding could be a way to save the wild populations. Apparently they're considered bad omens down in some parts of South America and are killed out of fear. I'd highly recommend giving it a listen if you're interested.
Dwarf chameleons, many soft shelled tortoises, many snakes, countless small lizards, many toroises and many iguanas are all critically endangered. You should do vidoes discussing some of them.
I'm a kid, so I don't have the money. But I love animals. I love reptiles. I love keeping pets. I love learning how to keep reptiles. If I had the money, an electric blue day gecko is one of my top choices for pets to get

Can you do a top 5 best pet inverts, I know that this is a reptile channel, but inverts and reptiles appeal to the same kind of people. Also, in the past you haven't always stuck with reptiles either.
Just a thought, but I think it'd be interesting to see a video where you speak with a captive breeder of each reptile/amphibian mentioned on this list. I'd happily watch a long form video that included all of them in a one-shot!
Can I just say after doing this for 40 years that there are so many reptiles hobbyists have brought back from the brink of extinction. Of course I do not condone breaking the law but it is the reptile community who brought awareness to dying reptile species. Captive breeding ensures that some species will never die out. I was ever so fortunate to work with The Bronx Zoo as well as in Australia with rare species that are not considered rare now and it was hobbyists that saved them from near extinction honestly.
Apparently oxlottles can cross breed with some kind of salamander native to NJ and make a venomous invasive species which is why you can't have them legally in NJ.
I have a Standings day gecko I bought 16 yrs.ago. She's w.c. and STILL going strong. Her natural habitat is in danger because of collection and the charcoal trade. They are considered in threatened status from what I've read.

Electric blue is one of my favorite colors so number 5 is pretty awesome, too. I wonder, with a big enough enclosure, if they could be kept with mourning geckos? Probably not, but that'd be cool.
Just found dragon snakes in Indo! Such cool snakes! But yes as you said, unless attitudes in their range (same with earless monitors) change, they are beyond doomed. It was very disheartening the devastating amounts of trash (particularly single use plastics) that covered the landscape there. It would take a very dramatic shift in attitudes and infrastructure to fix it.
Loved this! Telling herpers that they are the last refuge from extinction for some species (ie.: Crested Geckos) is the sort of message that empowers them to do more of the same. Has any effort been made to breed the San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) in captivity? With climate change, disappearing food supply (frogs which are also dying out), etc. -- we seem to be waiting for the last 1,000 or so to die out so we can build yet one more strip mall.
I remember seeing the electric blue daygeckos being sold in the pet section of a farm supply store in my area back then... Should haver baught em, they actually werent that expensive then.
I am surprised you did not in include Morelia carinata. We’re very close to extinction. Make a video on them it is such a unique snake. Explorative and loves to climb.
When I was very young (under 10), I used to see a wide variety of snakes around my backyard. Blue racers in particular were very common. When my parents were kids, they saw an even wider array of species, and my grandparents seemed to think of them as an everyday part of life. I haven’t seen many of those snakes from my childhood in a long time, and I’ve never seen some of those my parents or grandparents told me stories about at all. I did a bit of research, and most are now endangered in the ranges where they used to be common decades ago… It makes me want to cry, honestly. There’s very little respect or concern for endangered reptiles in the general populace, compared with “cute” animals like pandas or elephants. I wish more people would realize that ALL of them are worth saving, and play critical roles in the balance of nature. 😢
Only a reptile depending on who you ask, but there are quite a few parrots that keepers brought back from extinction. I am surprised you did not in include Morelia carinata. We’re very close to extinction. Make a video on them it is such a unique snake. Explorative and loves to climb.
The sad part is not just reptiles, but a good chunk of animals are probably only gonna be found in captivity
Dragon snake is one I'd love to have. They're so gorgeous!
I'm actually looking to get an acolyte so an updated care guide would be amazing
