    I live in a part of Canada where -20c is common so I have learned to dress so cold temperatures are not an issue that gets in the way of taking a good photo. Layers are key . So is having the ability open up a layer or close it especially around head and neck. For your hands you can't beat a pair of flexible leather mittens or gloves.

    I have bought a metal and cloth sunbed because I want to use it where the ground is wet. Either bogs, streams or a beach. Time will tell how good idea this is.
    I have several secutors, a foldable saw and something to camouflage the cut surface. Now I mainly use a big black permanent marker (nobody had gray), but I also the have some stuff from a garden center. I also considered using coloured oil, paint or Wood Stain.
    I use a cheap pillow in a reusable carrier bag to rest my feet on during winter. It keeps them warm. In the car this winter I will use a duvet (possibly two) for the first time to keep warm. The cover has to be grey/dark so that it does not reflect in the window.
    I use a fence pole to create holes in the ground for branches, stands, etc. It will probably be upgraded with a foot rest to increase penetration.
    I use a battery drill from IKEA to drill feeding holes in dead trees. I have a thermos with warm fat to fill the voids in the hole. It keeps the feed from becoming soggy.
    I use Geraniol to keep mosquitos away. Not only will they try to escape, but they will not suck blood when I sleep. One drop in each of the four corners of my hat and one drop on the longest finger on each hand. And I'm fully clothed. One drop in the drivers cabin of my car and one drop at the rear where I sleep.

      Metal fence posts can work quite well. I have used them sometimes. Nice infos, thank you!

    I really don’t feel qualified to give you advice about gear, Jan. But since you specifically asked about backpacks, I thought I'd just quickly mention what I use.
    First the LowePro Slingshot 202 AW. This is not very relevant for you, I fear, and certainly not for bird photography, because it's far too small for big lenses, and it's discontinued anyway. But I love it for more general photography. It’s just so light that you hardly feel it on your back. And you can easily get to your gear without taking it off by just swinging it round to your front..
    Second the LowePro FlipSide 500 AW. This is still in their lineup, I think. It easily holds a big lens and lots of other equipment. And it feels good to cary. It can also be swung round your hips to your front, and as it opens from the back, you can access your gear without laying it down in the dirt.
    I also tried the LowePro ProTactic 450AW, but that one I didn’t like! It felt really heavy, stiff and just uncomfortable. The side doors to quickly get a camera in or out were cool, but if you need another lens or anything else from the bag, you'll have to take it off and lay it down. And if you've attached pouches or things like that to the straps on the outside of the bag, they will probably have to be removed before you can put it down. So the whole idea of speed goes out the window. I know other people like it, but it wasn’t for me!
    I also use shoulder bags, but they’re only good for storing gear and carrying it from your house to your car. Not for logging around in the wilderness.

    I like using the 1DX mii, 5D Sr,
    5D miv, and two 7D mii bodies. With the 600mm L f4 i.s., 400mm Lf2.8 i.s.plus the 300mm f2.8 and the 100mm-400mm vii.
    Each combination has its own strengths and weaknesses, different conditions call for different tools to complete a job. If I was just starting out I would go for 7D MII and the 400mm 5.6 or the 100mm-400mm vii. When the 7D mii was introduced I loved the ergonomics along with its burst rate, crop sensor,image capture and focus system. I knew at the price which was far less than my full frame 1Dx it was a bargain so I purchased two.

    The Kirk Security strap has a clamp to grab a Arca-Swiss foot and the strap has sufficient padding so one can carry a 600mm f/4 lens and a camera around with little effort and it leaves on hand free for the tripod. Much easier than leaving the lens on the head and carrying the entire assembly around.

So for me currently 7dmk2 and 100-400 mk2 works great for speed and flexibility and when conditions are really good some above average images will come out of this. Maybe when I find the time, funds and mental piece of mind to focus more one photography I think a 500/600 f4 and full frame would be great. But what to think of mirrorless developments..?

I bought myself a Canon 1.4 extender without doing the research and found the auto focus wont work. I have just bought a cheap gimbal off ebay and fitted it to my cheap tripod but I haven't used it in the field yet.
    I am seriously considering upgrading the camera and I am looking at the Canon 7D Mark ii as the crop sensor will give greater reach and they appear to have excellent auto focus. I don't see my budget extending to a Canon Prime lens.

    I am using Godox v1 round head flash do you have any idea the better Beamer work perfectly with it ,I am interested to add this b.beamer to my kit and I am confused?

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад +1

      I am not sure, there are many many different better beamer options, maybe check the B&H website and see if they have a godox one. If it's fully round, they will probably not have one that fits

    Nice technique and video mate, but why in the world would I use flash when I fully camouflage myself and wait 3 hours for a kingfisher to show up, just to scare it away after the first burst? 😳

    Thanks Jan for the clear video, I had to pause your previous videos and zoom in try to figure out all your equipment :) I would like to add a pair of sturdy binoculars or scope with image stabilization when the birds are high up on a tree. Can you give us a link or name of the brand of flash extender you use?

    Hi Jan, I really like the Atlas Athlete backpack from atlaspacks.com/products/atlas-athlete-camera-pack#. It is really expandable for when you need to haul other gear not just camera equipment. It is also really collapsible if you need to fly on a plane. It balances very well and is comfortable. It protects your camera gear perfectly. I bought it in March and have hauled it to Peru as well as many hikes around my home town. So far it has been the best pack I’ve used. I appreciate your videos and think you are very ethical and practical. I likewise use the Canon 5D Mark IV and a Sigma 150-600, but mostly the 7d Mark II so I don’t have to use an extender.

    Really??? Cutting branches and using that flash??? Better not to take photos in such circumstances. I think best equipment for bird photography is the one which does not involve Cutting pliers, bending branches as per need and using that damm flash for Self convenience... I realised that is how you get "nice" catchlight in all your photos..

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  5 лет назад +5

      Sumukh Purohit thanks for your concerns. Our ideas of bird photography differ and we approach it differently, which is totally fine. It would be boring if we all did the same thing. If I cut branches in my yard or a friends property where I made this video, I don’t think that’s any cause for concern. There are also so many misunderstandings about the use of flash. I will make a video about it soon. Low powered fill flash is very different to what you might be imagining. In terms of the catchlight, if you position yourself in the right spot you will always get a nice reflection in the birds eye, with or without flash. You might assume I use the flash all the time, which I don’t. I use it whenever I think it’s appropriate and helps. When the light is nice you don’t need it.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  5 лет назад +1

      I find it more peaceful for the bird when it comes naturally to a bird bath where I placed a branch, compared to me stalking it through the woods and stressing it out, because it feels like it’s followed by a predator that doesn’t let go of it.

    • @isoawe1888
      @isoawe1888 5 лет назад +7

      What’s up with all the hostility? Using a fill flash is not like hitting an animal with flash at night. It doesn’t even seem to change animal’s behavior. Not sure you have any trees where you live, but a routine trimming will keep them healthier. He’s not cutting trees down to get a shot.

      @@isoawe1888 Absolutely! I've taken many photos of birds with flash and they don't seem to notice. And, as you say, the pruning is good for the trees!
