"It's not blackmail money" "My sister-in-law's bribes" hmmm~ That did make me wonder though, how do people of companies ensure other's don't leak sensitive info (early)? Like, some actor in a movie that hadn't signed an NDA as part of getting the gig, and they realize they need them to sign one but they obviously don't want to so compensation is offered. Would it not be blackmail if OP had formalized a NDA contract that stipulated her non-disclosing for a month, and the pay for that is 1k? And that it can be re-negotiated each month, or will otherwise automatically renew every month so long as paying party keeps paying (and automatically terminate when they stop, just like how the hypothetical company stops renewing the NDA when the movie is released). Either way, I think OP was the asshole for disclosing the non-disclosable immediately after the threat. Should have at least waited until after SIL missed a payment.
@@feha92 Technically, no. Blackmail requires the thing you are demanding payment to not disclose be 'wrong' somehow. Illegal, immoral, etc. and you have to initiate the transaction yourself. In your example, the company offered the actor compensation, the actor negotiated for better terms. Even if the secret was 'wrong', it wouldn't be blackmail. Modifying your example, if the studio just didn't want the actor ruining the ending, and the actor demanded payment to not do so, that's not exactly blackmail either. It's extortion. Blackmail is a form of extortion, but it is a specific one that doesn't really fit here. Blackmail would be more like if the actor caught the director getting inappropriate with someone on the casting couch and demanded that payment structure to not reveal it. Having said all that, you live in a world where the word 'literally' gets used for two exactly opposite things with such regularity that the dictionaries have stopped fighting it, so don't worry about the details too much.

Blackmail: the action, treated as a criminal offense, of demanding payment or another benefit from someone in return for not revealing compromising or damaging information about them Bribery: Persuade someone to act in one's favor, typically illegally or dishonestly, by a gift of money or other inducement
Correct, and it wasn't blackmail. It was bribery. She did ask for money, but she did after an offer was made from the start. She didn't go with the information and demanded something; Chloe OFFERED, then she named her price. Bribery, not Blackmail.
She's technically correct, but I wonder why she cares? She can't possibly have thought the distinction would prevent people from being mad at her, and it doesn't look like she's having some crisis of conscience over it.

ESH. Possibly an unpopular opinion: But they are ALL an A-hole, including OP. First...outside of if OP is an A-hole for that... That still is blackmail and OP is quite silly for insisting to not use the word. Like OP even addmit themself that Chloe cleary expected smth like a spa day...not money...aka Chloey never really ''offered money first'' she just said ''I do anything'' and OP cleary turned the situation to there favor and brought the money aspect in the conversation!! That...very much is still Blackmail...it counts😂. But I wouldn't call OP an A-hole for that...I would have done the same (I am just not affraid to call it what it is). Now, yes..the Brother is also an A-hole, for the rumor and for beeing a cheater. I would even call his wife cheating ''karma'' and very much deserved! OP also isn't at fault for Chloes cheating!! Its not like they made Chloe cheat? So ofc OP isn't at fault for the brothers ''marriage'' to fail!! Still...OP did decide to keep quiet. Chloe did and would have cheated anyway and yes the Brother deserved it. But when OP keeped quiet and even blackmailed Chloe...that was OP decision!!! Tbh, I have to agree. Ofc bullying is awfull...but spreading a rumor of beeing a kleptomanic or knowing your brothers wife cheats and just letting it happen are 2 messed up stuff...on 2 diffrent levels! I would definetly call it petty. And tbh 2 - doesn't make a + in this case!! Just bc the Brother wronged OP doesn't mean what they did is suddenly just or good? Its just ill intend, revenge and anger. They are simply BOTH A-holes! Yes, OP should have just gone No Contact with there Brother...not stay to keep quite about an affair.
Half ways through and yes, that was bribe money, but also, do the parents know the semblance between Cloe and her brother? Edit: so they knew and didn't care. Well isn't that family just a whole bag od @$$
Reddit always suggests to the OP that they should get therapy in stories like this one, to the point of almost being comedic, but wow does the OP here need therapy. At least if she goes to therapy she might actually understand what blackmail actually is. Also a rumor going around that you're a klepto doesn't seem like something that would genuinely ruin your entire highschool experience, it kind of just seems like OP was a social outcast and used their brother as a comfortable scapegoat.
@@lunarhalo9155nah man they are right, bullying is wrong but that rumor like that wouldn't make you an outcast for all four years of highschool, especially once the brother graduated. OP is probably not a very nice person and that's why people didn't like them. Also, it was definitely blackmail.
@@lunarhalo9155 It would potentially make things worse, for a little while. But it's a minor rumor, not the kind of thing that'd genuinely ruin four years of your life by itself. She did the right thing minding her damn business and benefiting from it, too. Telling the truth wasnt going to magically make her family love her, they'd just blame her for ruining their relationship
"Yeah ops brother was a cheater and an asshole who ruined 4+ years of her life without any care or remorse, but she should still do the right thing!" you're just a doormat who lets shitty people walk all over you, you can say that
She ratted him out and he got revenge. He didn't bully her or treat her bad . She held a grudge against her brother for years and blamed him for 4 yrs of bullying even tho she said she was alil but of in high-school dorky . Nobody is getting bullied for 4yrs cause of a rumor
Everybody sucks... First, there's such a thing called framing, and it would be very interesting to have the story from other people less involved. First things first, OP still compactuated with cheating. She may had have her reasons but also, if this had came out before, then there wouldn't be an innocent child that'll be in the crosshairs now. Secone, she just demanded money to buy her silence, but that's not blackmail, of course not. And that's not a one time thing, but a monthly payment instead with threats of exposure covertly and overtly made. The thing she herself says when making the "deal" that her SIL wasn't that into it but OP basically said this was the price for her silence, this screams bm independent if the other party offered something or not prior. If you keep the thing and keeps using it overtime to get money, that's pretty clear cut. Now for the brother, being cheated on was karma. But also let's not act like a highschool relationship is equal to marriage. If the last update is true, then he's like the wife and they deserve each other. No sympathy here but also, feels like things may be missing here. There's basically nothing of him after hs for we to know what happened later on in his life. Parents seem like they favored the brother over her... If this is true or only her perception of things we can't know, but of course knowing the info from their POV is clear why they would be mad. Since they have neglected OP tho (at least by her account), that's what they have sown.
So his brother spread a rumor about him his senior year in hs so he extorted 6k from his sister in law after finding out she was cheating on him. That’s not even petty revenge that’s just being an ass hole. Then he’s self righteous about it and goes no contact even though it probably was his family cutting him out
Per Google, "demanding payment or another benefit from someone in return for not revealing compromising or damaging information about them." Literally blackmail, as well as extortion. The brother is also scummy.
"the offering, promising, giving, accepting or soliciting of an advantage as an inducement for an action which is illegal, unethical or a breach of trust." This is the definition of Bribery, which would suit more the situation considering they were making a deal in the first place. Still scummy? For sure, but this situation ain't blackmail. It would be if she knew about the situation then went and demanded something, but she was offered and the price was named.
@@nathanmello4407 Are you trying to claim that bribery is mutually exclusive to blackmail? You do know that the compensation in a case of blackmail, is also always called a bribe, right?
@@feha92 - It still isn't blackmail. It WOULD be if she knew about the information, then went to te person and said "if you give me X i won't say this to everyone". This was not the case. In this case it is considered bribery because they made a deal, and it started wit the "victim" of said deal. They were paying so the other would keep their mouth shut.
Everyone pretty much sucks here, besides OP. She got that bag that she didn't ask for, and her entirely family is actual traah and owes her more than that lol. Would highly suggest a therapist for her own long term happiness though 🎉
All these people acting like they wouldnt have at least thought about taking the money if put in the same position. Is op an asshole? Yes. Do i blame them? Hell no. I probably wouldve done the same.
Yeah people who say they're all _equally_ bad are delusional. They're all AHs, OP too, but they're by no means _equal_ AHs. That's ridiculous. The brother, parents and Chloe are far bigger AHs. OP shouldn't have taken that money, but at least she got a few grand out of it and in the end it led to the best possible outcome: she realized that her family is toxic and went NC. Had she not taken the money she wouldn't have been put on blast on social media for "blackmailing" Chloe and she wouldn't have been pushed to go NC. She would have continued to humiliate herself to please her family every family holiday. Families who are more concerned with keeping up appearances than with the well-being of _all_ their children are downright evil.
Thank you! I agree that op is an AH but I will say with chest i would do the same damn thing because image your brother ruining you hs life and constantly bully you for years and then you find out a b***h of a wife cheats on him. I would say “I don’t owe any of you 💩, b***h better have my money!”
No, people are not saying they wouldn't take the money. People are saying they would not take it in a manner that makes them liable to get a ticket to jail. If I were op in that situation (which would need to include the whole "hates brother" thing, obviously), I would tell the SIL that my price would be a grand per month, but to hold off on finalizing the deal as I need to hire a lawyer to ensure that it is legal and write up an NDA contract for us both to sign with sufficient exit-clauses on both sides (so SIL doesn't have to keep paying after she ie. gets a divorce) and all that jazz. Basically, if you are going to do it, do it correctly. Get the money taxed, and paperwork detailing how it isn't blackmail/extortion, and so on.
It is blackmail by definition. And everyone is the AH, but op is the least of an AH. People who say it's her fault for snitching: 1. She was cornered by his senior gf who demanded to know if he had anything going on. To say you wouldn't have said anything is so easy until most of you are in the situation as a 14 yr old freshman confronted by a senior who is much bigger than you. Being in such a situation can cause anxiety or stress which can result in many people to stumble and panic and a 14 year old girl is very much vulnerable to it. 2. Even if she wasn't intimidated, snitching, especially for Cheating, shouldn't be an excuse to be bullied for 4 years. Not to mention in the story she states her brother never apologizes and after being humiliated for one day, he graduated 3 months later and went off to college leaving his sister to deal with four years of torment. 3. She did not have any support system. Although she is wrong for blackmail because blackmail is illegal in many places, she never got proper support or therapy. When she got bullied, her parents didn't do anything and just brushed her off. She was a freshman and hadn't made any friends and even if she did have friends, they could only do so much. OP needs therapy. Although it's never excusable to blackmail someone, it's understandable why OP did it. She never learned to properly heal and it is unhealthy. I hope OP gets therapy because if she doesn't I fear she may not stop at blackmail next time. I hope this experience can open her eyes and show her that she needs to seek help because bullying traumatizes the crap out of people and people who have been bullied deserves a healed heart and peace.
I have to say I can't blame her (op) for the path she took. The crap she put up with from her brother and no mediation from her parents definitely colored her decision making. But her brother is a habitual cheater, and a full asshole for creating the rumor about her, that destroyed her years of High School. Her brother did not deserve to be told about his wife's cheating. It sounds more like she learned how to be better off by cutting the toxic people out of her life. To me what she did was self preservation, to hell with the others. She should have no guilt for her actions.
"Pay me or I'll tell" that is objectively blackmail. Is it understandable given the context and history of everything? Sure. But to say its not blackmail is just silly.
Just going to say she made lot of terrible decisions, especially the blackmail because that can and will ruin her entire career if her job times out. And I think she needs a lot of psychological help because their was a lot of blame shifting especially about how blackmailing was okay. That's not okay and especially because of her job she should know that it was especially not okay. I don't know how the parents treated her in HS bc it wasnt explained but it just sounds like she instead of talking to her brother about it not being okay to cheat or speaking to her parents about what he was doing "in house" she ousted him and got him humiliated though it was his own actions that caused it she could have handled it better. Also she made remarks about her being uncool to hang around with but ignoring the fact he was a senior and she was a freshmen that is pretty typical. And she says he only had "one bad day" while she had 4 yrs she doesn't know if that really true bc I know my family doesn't know all my bad days that was just get own biased from the situation. And I get her parents not wanting to intervene in it since she handled her brother situation quite terribly though if it really got so bad I don't believe her parents would have not steped up. Through our the story their was a lot of inconsistency that sounded like she pushed her parents away and blames them for not taking her side. And instead asking for help when she felt super isolated she started blaming them for it. She then pushes terrible decisions she makes about the brothers marriage and blackmail as if those were okay choices. I think her parents were right to be appalled to hide her brother cheating wife affair plus using money bc in their mind (bc she might not have told or opened up to them) that it was just a petty and simple HS drama that she should have got over. But as a adult she used that as a excuse. She needs help bc like I said she is most likely going to lose her job and career for it. Don't get me wrong brother is a bad guy but she made horrible decision that she'll have to live with

I’d say Op is NTA on this one, she caught her brother cheating on his Gf and Op was bullied all her high school year, but the moment someone cheats on her brother and suddenly Op is the bad guy for not telling her brother? I’d say this is karma.
Op is definitely an AH but this is absolutely understandable and tbh my petty a** would do the same thing
While yes, this was an ESH (everyone sucks here) situation, OP was justified in the villain arc she went on. Sometimes you gotta take the asshole route and get payback. I won't even bash her for her actions. Therapy is definitely needed though.
I love this story. Chef kiss. Chloe got too greedy.
why didn't OP challenge AP immediately? i'd have said "guess what? i'm calling the cops right now and having you jailed for threatening me unless you pay me 1K a month too. my finger's on the send button. cough it up. NOW."
I got to be honest, I didn't see that ending coming. But then it happened and I laughed so hard 😂.
Blackmail: the action, treated as a criminal offense, of demanding payment or another benefit from someone in return for not revealing compromising or damaging information about them
Bribery: Persuade someone to act in one's favor, typically illegally or dishonestly, by a gift of money or other inducement
Correct, and it wasn't blackmail. It was bribery.
She did ask for money, but she did after an offer was made from the start. She didn't go with the information and demanded something; Chloe OFFERED, then she named her price. Bribery, not Blackmail.
@@nathanmello4407 You know, I actually agree with you
She's technically correct, but I wonder why she cares? She can't possibly have thought the distinction would prevent people from being mad at her, and it doesn't look like she's having some crisis of conscience over it.
@@MacClay8Because her family was probably making a stink about "how dare you blackmail your sister in law", when in reality. Chloe was bribing OP, OP just gave a number.
But if you wanna pay attention, almost every top comment on this video is "blackmail is blackmail, distinction without a difference, everyone sucks here, you're shitty OP"
Idk. I'd at least tell the parents that OPs brother should apologize for spreading rumors. Tell them that if they wanna be mad at someone they should be mad at the brother for showing her how to act.
Unpopular opinion but I get op. Yeah hiding cheating is wrong but seeing as how her brother never changed, this same situation would’ve happened months if not YEARS from now
OP is an example of "just because you're not doing anything wrong or unjustified, doesn't mean you're doing anything right either.
The whole family is crazy
I think this is a case where OP is definitely the asshole, but so are the other people in the story, everyone's an asshole!
sometimes it's good to be an asshole. This is one of those times. OP trolled the fuck out of a couple of scumbags, gets to laugh watching the aftermath, cut a bunch of toxic family out of her life, and is $6k richer for it. Only Ws in my book!

People like you are funny because they can’t wait to tell on themselves. The OP is right, this was a contract between two people. Blackmail is defined as one person having leverage over another person that has no power to refuse an unfair situation. The slot wife could’ve just annulled her marriage, but she chose not to. You seem like the type of person who cheers for the cheaters in the story because you empathize with their point of view of being selfish with no accountability.

Even if this ended up on their desk this does little to advance their career, boost their numbers, or garner public support, and they likely wouldn't bother filing.
ESH. OP is not a good person, but the best person in this whole story. she's vengeful and sadistic, but only because of what her brother did to her.
her brother was a horrible person in high school who seems to have matured a BIT, but i don't feel sorry a former player got cheated on.

The brother deserves his karma 😂😂
Ngl op sounds kinda stuck up at the start
"If i knew it would end up lile this, i probably would have kept my mouth shut"

Stuck up?? What? She was bullied relentlessly for 4 years of her life, so yeah, one would assume that she would regret “doing the right thing.” How does that make her sound stuck up, I’m so confused…
Uhhh how? She learned that revealing the truth as a kid got her stern looks from her parents, betrayal from her brother and bullying from her peers for four years. That’s not being stuck up, she wa straight traumatized. She just turned her trauma to revenge, which I agree isn’t healthy but she doesn’t sound like she has a good support system to tell her otherwise.

Glad the comments all seem to have sense op is defo an AH blaming everyone else for there actions😂
Stay away from hr ladies
Kinda sounds like an all-around awful family, including the OP.
"Front desk at a hotel" why did OP talk like this job pays alot. I usually see this a minimum wage.
That's still black mail - "I won't tell x this if you give me Z". Also 2 wrongs don't make a right. Overall a match made in heaven 😂
Possibly an unpopular opinion:
But they are ALL an A-hole,
including OP.
This woman is worse then all the other bad actors in the story. And that's saying something because they are all awful.
"It's not blackmail....it's just an arrangement so I won't tell her secret...." The hell you think blackmail is.......
Are you saying the rumors HER OWN BROTHER spread would not make things worse?
That no matter what OP did, she would be bullied anyway?
@@lunarhalo9155nah man they are right, bullying is wrong but that rumor like that wouldn't make you an outcast for all four years of highschool, especially once the brother graduated. OP is probably not a very nice person and that's why people didn't like them.

@@lunarhalo9155 It would potentially make things worse, for a little while. But it's a minor rumor, not the kind of thing that'd genuinely ruin four years of your life by itself. What a conundrum
Based.
I mean it was definitely black mail lmao. I don't think there's any denying that aspect. Doesn't make her family not horrible
OP didn't make their brother's wife to cheat on him.
So the one who ruined the brother's life was his wife.
Karma's a bitch. Who came for everyone and took no prisoners
The op is hundred percent in the right but yes thats blackmail. Its all because of the parents and how they raised them.
Yeah... thats blackmail
Then he’s self righteous about it and goes no contact even though it probably was his family cutting him out
This woman is awful
At first when i heard the title i was like whatttttttt? However, as the story went on i was like ohhhhhhhhh.
Per Google, "demanding payment or another benefit from someone in return for not revealing compromising or damaging information about them." Literally blackmail, as well as extortion. The brother is also scummy.
"the offering, promising, giving, accepting or soliciting of an advantage as an inducement for an action which is illegal, unethical or a breach of trust."
This is the definition of Bribery, which would suit more the situation considering they were making a deal in the first place. Still scummy? For sure, but this situation ain't blackmail. It would be if she knew about the situation then went and demanded something, but she was offered and the price was named.
@@nathanmello4407 She named her price after shutting down the possibility of a negotiation. I will say I'm no expert when it comes to these matters.
Op just lobbed a fat grenade and walked away
People who say it's her fault for snitching:
