    Not to say it's impossible but, I think you would have a hell of a time if this safe was mounted against a wall. Left side and back side of the safe against the wall. Then you would have no leverage to pry from. So my suggestion is if you are on a budget and only can buy this style safe, Mount it in the far left corner. bolt it to the floor and wall.

      +MATT BURGESS Thanks for pointing that out. I really don't have the budget for an expensive safe, so I am going to do as you suggest.

      +sweetconti I have an even cheaper Stack-On locking gun cabinet. Its hard to explain, but I have it bolted to the floor in the closet. Then I have a "shelf" that takes up the entire closet front to back and side to side, which is bolted to the top. Then I have a vertical 2x4 positioned in front of the door jam, which is connected to the top shelf and the floor. The 2x4 still allows the door to open but it will prevent anyone from getting a good angle to pry it open.

      I had a break in a few months ago. I didn't even have a safe, I had a HON vertical file cabinet secured to the floor, with a home made bar down the middle with locks on each end, and it covered the drawer lock. They grabbed lose things like a couple of tablets and the TV.....didn't look like they even touched the file cabinet. All guns were still in the cabinet. Most meth heads are looking for a quick smash and grab....not spending time on something they are not sure they can get into.

      "Helluva time" is probably an exaggeration, but it would have taken longer for sure.
      I'd personally INVEST in a better safe, bolt it down, and not worry about it.

    Wayne is correct about the safe being low end. If I had $2000 I would buy a high end safe and be very happy with my investment. However, I can only afford the $300 safe so that's what I have and I feel very good about it. I've been in law enforcement for 8 years and have taken a lot of burglary reports. I've never seen anyone even try to force open a safe in this city. They kick your door, rampage through the house checking the usual hiding spots and get out quickly. When they come across a safe (even a Stack-on) that is bolted down they spin the dial with a sad look on their face and leave with whatever wasn't locked up. Buy whatever safe you can afford. I don't mean to take away from what Wayne is saying because he is correct. I'm just saying any safe is better than no safe.

      Thanks Wayne for the vid, you also showed that that Stack-On put up a good fight than a cabinet would have. Placement is important.
      Trevor, Thanks for your insight from your experience. Thinking about it, if a burglar came prepared to successfully break the safe then it must be an inside job and no safe is safe.
      Note a security system is just that a system of other layers such as alarms too. 3 layers,1 locked door, 2 some sort of alarm, 3 a safe. Options: hiding the safe, possible surveillance, and or a giant hanging pendulum medieval AXE that will swing once safe is compromised or Egyptian sand from a pharaoh's tomb that will fill the room trapping the burglar till police arrived. See simple...

    That's all well and good, but this assumes a lot of things...
    1. That the robbers know you have a gun safe and come prepared. Most robbers want to be in and out, looking for guns in nightstands and the like. Most home robbers don't even bring pry bars.
    2. That no one is going to hear all that racket and come and investigate.
    3. That you don't have a house alarm or some other secondary means of security besides a safe. Security should be like an onion, with multiple layers. I wouldn't rely on any one thing.

    • @waynewinton
      @waynewinton  9 лет назад +1

      Well yes I completely agree with you on most things. 1 is mutipule layers of security. Home alarm system, quality locks on the entry doors, security film on glass and a quality safe maby even a big dog. If you have all this you will deture and defend 90% of the criminals out there.

      binyamj yup you are right... And in my house i have the equipement to cut open a 5000$ safe... So that proves only 1 thing... Those safes are only good to keep innocent souls away from your guns... Real burglars will find a way in pretty much any safe lol

      @DyingToLive310 9 лет назад

      +SuaveGunman Anyone breaking into a house will bring a crowbar... unless it's just a crackhead hoping to get a TV or something. Break-ins usually happen during the day because there's more people at work/school. At night people are most likely to be home. So the sound of banging metal could be confused for construction.

    I get it. Given time, effort, tools and enough work space you can get into this safe. What would really impress me is if you can actually have one installed in a walk in closet like most safes are installed in. With all the actually items that you would also find in a walk in closet and in the cramped conditions in a walk in closet. Use the same tools in the video and see if you can get into the safe in 5 to 10 mins. Now that would be impressive. Lets see a videos like that. Because in the real world. People, well most people wouldn't install any safe in the middle of a garage with several grades of Prybars and hand sledges at the ready.

    I've watched about a dozen pry open safe videos in the last couple of days. Yours is the first video Ive seen with the safe bolted to the floor with one guy, not two with the safe flipped on it's back, breaking into it. ( like you said ). My $500 gun safe scares the hell out of me. I really had no idea how easy they were to pry open. On a positive note, I am in the process of investing in a $3400 American made gun safe, which will be mine at the end of the week. I had to develop a mindset that says I'm not buying safe, I'm "investing" in the security of my prized possessions.

      Just floor mount your safe properly in the corner of a room and you make it nearly impossible to use simple prying methods to get into the safe. Of course there's better safes out there..but lots of inexpensive safes can be made a LOT harder to get into than this guy makes it look if the safe is in the corner of the room and floor mounted which takes away a lot of room for leverage with prying. This video isnt a great example, if anything it shows how you shouldnt place this kind of safe in the middle of the room to provide great leverage with. Put this safe into a corner and watch it take a LOT more work and/or time to pry it open.

    l understand that this is a cheap safe. It took a substantial amount of force to open it. If you anchor this correctly and not place it somewhere say in a basement or corner of a room. It's definitely made for someone with only a few guns, and some important items. It will definitely keep the kids out. If someone wants something bad enough in your home they will get it or get into it. Normal hands without the tools. This safe will work for me. Thanks for the video.

    I know you are trying to show that the safe is weak, and it may not be the 1000 lb Ft Knox one, but if it was mounted to the wall all the way to the left of a closet and bolted down to the floor (with a security alarm blasting away the entire time), I like my chances with this safe. Plenty of time for the cops to come....even in my neighborhood.

    Being making a lot of noise was not an issue I was reading how thieves are using electric powered abrasive wheel cutters. You cleanly cut a hole in the side and have access to everything. Any safe I guess can be breached with the right tools. A lot of safes are put in the garage/shop and their may be a cutting torch there too. My father always told me the best defense is to not let everyone know what and where you have it. Just say'n........................... Great video BTW and appreciate your effort to show how it's done. Great job.

    A lot of good comments. A layered defense is key. A loud audible alarm, a loud yappy dog, and a well concealed safe are critical. If you can bury the safe into a wall with little access to the sides you take away the ability to pry. Did I mention that two vicious under fed german shepherd who do not bark would be helpful when the crack head bypasses the yappy dog.

  • @kamikazekrunch8363

    You would be surprised on how much effort a thief will use in order to get potential firearms if it's possible. pistols and rifles equal money (cha-ching), trust me on this, if they see a gun safe, they will try and if they notice that they can potentially break into it with what they have, they will try their hardest to get into that sucker.
    For a cheaper gun safe that is small enough to fit in a closet but still holds a few rifles and some pistols along with ammunition, it's best to put it in the closet, bolt that sucker in that way they don't have enough arm space or leverage to pry open that door.

    Looks pretty hard for the average thief to break into in the middle of a garage, let alone if installed in the home how it should be. A burglar would first have to find the safe, have the tools, have prying access to the left side, and then pry it open. All that is easily at least 5 minutes, more if installed with no pry access on the left. In my house they would have to do all this with the house alarm blaring and the police notified and on their way. You succeeded in convincing me to buy one.

    Hey Wayne Winton, Loved the video! While watching your video, I couldn't help but notice some of the extreme angles you had to go to using those tools to pry that safe open. What if you were to put that safe somewhere where the use of those angles were not available? That would make it extremely difficult and time consuming to break in to I would think. Something to think about for your next video perhaps.

  • @samwagner31

    Great vid, just a thought though. You mentioned that a Lot of guys in vids too the safe and you could to think of a scenario where there would be room for that. I noticed when you where prying the safe you stood behind it. In most cases where a safe is bolted down, you wouldn't be able to stand behind it like that do to a wall in the way. So you wouldn't be a me to et that kind of leverage you got. Not saying that would change the outcome of this video, but it'd probably take longer.

    • @waynewinton
      @waynewinton  9 лет назад

      Maybe but then I could just use the larger hook side of the crow bar to gain leverage from the front.

    Iv watched idk how many of these videos and there all setting in open areas .If you mount it in the corner with the door side that opens against the wall and use good mounting hardware so that it’s solidly mounted. The pry bar has no way of getting leverage except on the top .

    I l ive in a mostly black urban neighborhood, so I don't have as much to worry about, as far as thieves trying to break my firearms safe. If I lived in Baltimore, Harford, or Anne Arundel Counties, then this would be a greater concern.

    i just bought a 8 gun security gun cabinet recently.pretty good video. however, i doubt a burglar would bring those such tools with them while burglarizing ur home & if they do then it was probably a premeditated attack and they knew you had a safe with guns so they know you, or you have told someone who has told someone whom doesnt care about you because most burglars go for tvs, game or stereo systems, or jewelry and cash & if they bring such tools then they specifically are going for that safe

      James Wiley Well there are safes that the door can be pryed open and safes that they can't. I would like to eliminate that from the options of the crooks.

    The point of a gun safe (or any locked cabinet) is to act as a simple deterrent (i.e., avoid crimes of opportunity) and to prevent children from accessing firearms and amo. These safes are perfectly fine. If you want to a safe that is burglar proof....good luck.

    You got in but it was a pain and it took a little time..My safe is measures above that one and still only cost 700 bucks so I now feel pretty good about.lol...The safe dealer that I went to just tried and tried to scare me into something that I did not need...My safe is 551 pounds with twelve bots. In all honesty, the bolts are most for looks but the more the better..My safe is backed up to a wall between 2 Heavy workbenches with almost no room to move the door past 90 degrees, much less start prying..Its also bolted to the concrete foundation with 4 big ass bolts so it's not going to the ground easily..To top it all off, It's being watched anytime I am not home with a state of the art monitored alarm with a cell link to the police department. The average response time in my area is 3:00 min so Any crook dumb enough to keep trying to get in is busted for sure..
    I say all this because I'm feeling better after seeing this video..Although my safe is vastly superior to the very thin stack on in this video, it's still a RSC(that's a name used by safe salesmen to let you know yours sucks) I know you intent was to show how bad they were but I think everyone's situation is different and for some, I think you showed that this little cab did all right...That model by the way is like 120.00 at Walmart and I hate to say it but propible with every penny..lol..

    Idk...granted, it took you roughly 6 minutes from the time you started prying until the door was open but it did appear to be quite a workout, more than I think an average burglar would put in. Burglars are usually into what they can grab quickly and get out before the cops show up or someone sees them, if you add in things like a home alarm system, a dog that does not like unwelcome visitors...I just have my doubts they would put that much effort into trying to break into a gun safe that they might not succeed at as opposed to grabbing things in the open quickly and getting out of there

    Looks good to me simple fix people bolt your safe in the closet with sides against the two walls this makes it impossible to even get a prybar between the door and the frame of the safe. Problem solved ps bolt it to the wall and floor tipping makes any safe easy to get into or cut open. Most robbers are snatch and grab not a let's stay and get caught while trying to break open a safe they dont know is even full of stuff or not.

    Thanks for the video. The type of area you live in I think would weigh in on the security level you should choose. Im a 12 year veteran officer and have responded to hundreds of home break ins. I have NEVER investigated a RESIDENTIAL break in where a safe was broken into. The majority of the cases in my area, the offender gets in and out as quickly as possible, even leaving several valuables behind. Most of the suspects are either kids or crack heads just trying to get something easy to sell for their next fix. Im sure though in other areas you can find more "professional" criminals that can open your lesser quality safes in a minimum amount of time.

    Guys I have a question,
    My house is leveled off the ground. I've always wanted a Liberty Safe, but due to the weight, I fear one day with too much weight, it'll just break the floor. I was looking into this cabinet due to how little it weights, but I don't want to spend money on something that won't provide me with security. Is there any light weight safes you'd recommend me? Thanks.

      Ne'huatl Chango You could always build a reforcment area where you plan on putting the safe. Something as simple as 2x4s to spraed the weight over a wider area should be adiquite.

    I actually like a lot of Stack On products. They are cheap products designed for minimum security applications. I have a few that I store things like ammo and office supplies in. What it comes down to is that the buyer must understand that the large majority of "gun safes" (like this Stack On) are cosmetically enhanced products designed to mimic the appearance of a security safe, but they do not provide anywhere near the fire protection or the burglary protection of a real safe.
    This safe, and many like it, provide minimal-to-no security from a breech attempt. A concentrated penetration attack on that safe would almost surely occur on one of the sides where the armor will be weakest. While a fire axe would defeat the safe in a couple minutes, a standard cordless cutting tool could saw that safe open in 30 seconds or less.
    The bottom line is that if someone has higher value items or they want a product that will actually make it difficult for a criminal to gain entry, they need to buy a true security safe and not a "gun safe".

    • @waynewinton
      @waynewinton  9 лет назад

      Your first paragraph sends it up only use that it a whole lot nicer than I would there not many King gun safes there falsely advertising to be done Safes. the consumer needs to demand more of their security products and higher standards. if it is a gun safe call it a gun Safe, if its a cabinet call it a cabinet.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 9 лет назад

      Wayne Winton It is probably never going to happen. Part of the reason is consumers are getting cheaper and another part is that this demand for cheap safes has resulted in an explosion of foreign junk, creating a ripple effect with domestic makers. We are leaving the days of "buy it nice, but it once, enjoy it forever" to "bare bones pricing over everything else". The high price of steel and the high cost of shipping has made true safes pricier, and the refusal of buyers to purchase nicer products has set the stage for the so called "gun safes" (AKA "false security safes".)
      That Stack On is a couple hundred bucks new and that is the performance a couple hundred bucks gets and that is what consumers should expect of a product of this tier. The issue with Stack On products and other economy gun safe lines as such is when consumers purchase these with expectations that far exceeds the physical abilities of the safe, and they rely on these safes to protect contents that should be stored in a higher security safe. That sets the stage for a losing outcome.
      With the deceptive advertising practices safe makers use, this can make it difficult for the consumer to identify the differences and determine what product best suits their needs. A speciality safe store that carries a wide range of products usually is the best place to make such a determination. I agree with you the advertising is not right and we do deserve better, but I am not sure how we can really change that?
