Thanks very much, Liz, Tom and team. It will be great to see No.4 when it is back in service, most especially when running on the newly relaid section of track at Ty Mawr. I really enjoyed my week helping to dress the ballast there. For that, I stayed in one of the lovely cottages at Hendy Farm, so I can recommend that as a great place to stay when visiting the TR.
Thank you all, its very interesting to hear everything that's going on. Best wishes for the hydraulic inspection and looking forward to seeing No4 back in traffic!
Great to see all the new mod-cons being applied to 4, as well as the new works grey livery. I really like the addition of the cab roof vent, always wondered why more UK locos didn't have them. I really liked seeing the valve gear rocker arm up close without the boiler on top, reminds me of the Case traction engine valve gear.
Fantastic to see the whole loco broken down like a Lego kit! Hopefully someone knows how to put it all back together again. What would the original builders have made of CAD and 3D printing???
Nice progress, and impressive facilities at the VOR. It's a bit of a shame that - for example - the bunker sheets are being replaced rather than repaired; just means that gradually the loco's originality erodes away (even more than the corrosion has done!). [Although perhaps it's not that original today anyway?]
it's one of the hard balances to strike with having operational heritage fleets ( or indeed static preservation under some conditions) - wear is inevitable with all parts of anything that is used, and you'll always bee needing new parts- whether that's from a donor or new fabrication. The balance is in retaining the character as much as possible, and that comes down to having workshops having the knowledge on how to do it, and making sure that it's passed on. TR always seems to strike me as a place that does that well in all regards honestly.
lovely to see my personal favorite loco making such good progress! at the risk of sounding daft, what will happen to the worn out parts from ET that are being replaced?
They could end up in the narrow gauge museum located near the Talyllyn. That's where Talyllyn's original pistons were sent after one snapped. Edward Thomas' original smokebox could act as a display for his geisel ejector funnel.
SD printing steel? Did he mean that? I didn't realise just how much of the old engine was being replaced with new bits - maybe we should rename it Trigger's Broom!
No I wasnt meant to say 3D printing. What I was trying to explain was you get a 3D view on CAD of the finish design. Apologies for getting the words wrong in the video 👍
Grey livery. Loving the variation of liveries GE blue on no.1 now this one

Love that you went with a works gray livery!
Great to see the progress.
I love the grey livery so much
1. Edward Thomas - Kerr Stuart Gray
2. Douglas - RAF blue
3. Talyllyn - GER blue
Ah this is so cooll!!

Since it is such a major overhaul, why wasn't the opportunity to put new tyres on, since they have been profiled and will have to be re-tyred later?
Are the bars on the sunroof to stop the crew from escaping ?
Do you know how's Midlander?
I’ve driven past that railway

Douglas' overhaul is coming next year.

grey always looks good on a loco 👍👍

@@tomcurtis6567 Cheers. That's what I assumed - 3D printing with steel strong enough to cope with steam engine wear and tear would be very impressive!
Why not fit new tyres in such a complete rebuild?
Shame it won't be in red, that would have been perfect for the Awdry event!
Green just like before?
@@mmandmcb14 No, it's coming back in Kerr Stuart grey (the same colour as Diana).
@PHsRailwayVideos just like Talyllyn in GER blue.
@@mmandmcb14 Yeah, TR actually looks surprisingly good in blue - I was sceptical when I first heard but it actually looks really good!
@@PHsRailwayVideos Imagine if Peter Sam is in the Awdry event in Kerr Stuart grey.
Rest up Peter Sam
Hmm. Kerr Stuart grey...🤭
Ugh i hate being overhauled
Peter Sam getting an overhaul imagine if that was a story adapted
Edward Thomas is Peter Sam
