I absolutely ADORE your format of introducing Touhou. You really nail what's important to the franchise as a whole. By the way, you forgot to mention that the credits theme if this game is a rearrangement of the credits theme of Touhou 3 PoDD.
The whole soundtrack is so good its hard to pick an absolute favorite. That being said Voyage 1969 is far up on my list. As for character in this game, my favorite is Mokou. It seems like the Eientei girls are more popular overall though.
Really love the Moukou's theme. ZUN really managed to make the melody sounds as if it is stuck in an eternal loop which suits really well to a person that can't die

Done with the video, I'm a bit surprised you didn't say that this was a retelling of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, one of the oldest Japanese tales out there, and I think the world's first science fiction tale. I guess it is a bit beyond the story of the game itself, and I'm sure the other games all also drink from all manner of Japanese myths, maybe you could try finding these links to greater Japanese culture in them and pointing them out to us, I'd surely watch it!
Little correction: Eastern Youkai Beauty only plays during the Last Word spells, super hard spell cards that need to be unlocked via meeting certain conditions. Favorite character is Mokou. I even cosplayed as her for a convention with my friend going as Kaguya.

Ah yes, IN, probably the game I grinded the most to get my first Hard 1cc and now my first Lunatic 1cc. I really love the partner mechanic, and also that ZUN kinda reused it in SA. Also, having Youmu AND Sakuya as playable character is a big plus. Personally, I think IN has the music that stands out the most out of all Touhou games. Even if you wouldn't recognize a song, the songs just portray the topic of night and moon so well that you know they are from IN. I also think they have a great nostalgic tone. That ZUN rearranged some of his former songs definitely helps for that. Overall, I would say that IN's OST outshines even many of the other games' OST, and that sets the bar really high. Great work, my dude. I really love your style how you introduce Touhou via its music. Keep up this fabulous work :D
Mad lad also used the triple remix KILLOVE FIREPROOF for Mokou's fan theme and I'm cheering :) Touhou music and gorgeous fan art is how I found the series and 8 was my 2nd game (6 was first, but like you I sink major effort in 8 ). I love all it's music so much and It had Love Colored Master Spark and Reach to the Moon - Immortal Smoke :)

IN is the Touhou game my opinion changed of the most, the more I played it. I *hated* the time gimmick because I didn't understand it, but the more I played the more I grew to love it.

Sweet! I was worried you weren't going to make more of these. I can't help but love the version of Reisen that's fleshed-out by fans, I always have soft spot for the overworked underling types.
this is my favorite touhou game because of the amazing music that each stage has along with there being so many characters to choose from. My favorite character from this game is Mokou, she actually has a lot of backstory behind her. Mokou is actually the daughter of an emperor of Japan from way back, and she hated Kaguya because Kaguya made a fool out of her father with the famous impossible request. Mokou stole the elixir that Kaguya left behind and drinks it for herself, thus becoming immortal.
Love what you're doing, keep it up! I've been playing through all the windows Touhou games and having your videos as a sort of guide adds a lot to the experience. Cheers!
Easily my favorite Touhou game. I like the part of the stage 4 boss where halfway through the fight your opponent bails and you have to fly after them, the background zooming by as you pick up speed. Both boss themes are really fast and high energy so it works with both bosses.

Imperishable Night has some of my favorite dialogue in the main series. Something about the banter between the characters you pick is really charming. It's a midnight snack tour across the land!
The reason Tewi's name is written as Tewi even though it's pronounced Tei is because it's written in hiragana as てゐ, using the antiquated character ゐ (wi) that's not used in modern Japanese and has basically been combined in to い (i). It's supposed to be a subtle hint that she's a lot more ancient than she looks. She's also a reference to the legend of the Hare of Inaba, an ancient Japanese myth that was written down in the Kojiki, the oldest known literary work of Japan.
Idk, imperishable night , remains my fav ost ever. the Piano work on this ost is insane.... hypnotic, otherworldly.... i dont have words .... and listening to this during a full moon is an ethereal experience

I highly recommended this one to start Touhou. Its easy if you compare to the previous game. Fav is Reisen and this one is what make realise there is aTRUE ending, i got lucky and got 1CC run without knowing it. Plain Asia and history of the moon is my fav. Gahhh thanks for this! I love like all the characters, so hard to decide my favorite. I think I would say in terms of song tho… Maiden’s Capriccio, voyage 1969, eternal night (both), history of the moon, extend ash, and mystical maple. (But I really love them all)
Versus the Moriya Shrine based subplot and the Gensokyo creation plot, I believe that the lunarians plot tends to be consistently the most interesting. IN has hands down the most solid gameplay of all the games to date, and its soundtrack is only beaten by EoSD and SA imo. I hope you do one of these for LoLK and and SA too, as those are my favorites

IN is probably my favourite game of all time. While its not my first touhou game, its definitely one of my favorite. Its probably the very first game i really considered pure "art". The way that the stage flows with the music really shows me how amazing video games music could be. Not to mention the danmaku's beauty and the characters design. Its probably one of the reason i started being a touhou artist
Fun fact about Eternal Dream ~ Mystic Maple: it's actually a new arrangement of the credits theme from Touhou 5: Mystic Square, where it's just called Mystic Maple. ZUN still loved the theme, so he brought it to Windows audiences, as it suited IN perfectly.
I love Touhou the fan animation beautifully made and Senya/Yuuhei Satellite made the songs more alluringly beautifully and mesmerizing. Havent finished the (all) shooting game yet (easy/normal/hard/lunatic. I'm a noob) but finished the (all) fighting game (easy & normal). Also Reisen.
This is probably one of my favourite games, i like basically all of the music, it's super unique among other games of this series, and got some cool new faces to come with it. This game was really big and amazing with how many things it did, and i feel like if it was to be, let's say, a final game to the franchise, it would certainly be a final bang. And yeah, Mokou's my favourite, not only cuz' i really liked to use her in the "newer" fighting games against friends, but also cuz', you know, fire, cool design, cool backstory, what's there not to love about forever rebirthing phoenix?
This was my first Touhou game back when I was a teen! I'm almost 30 and I only just now got the English version and finding out what exactly happens in this game. The music and gameplay is just so damn good it's hard to find another Touhou that even comes close.

imo, you should leave the anime for last, is not much of interest as the music and artwork. and also Touhou never have official anime, so the anime isn't exactly canon to the game story.
AHHHHHHHH. My favourite touhou game series with a few of the most lovely songs for me. My favourite team is the Marisa and Alice team, because, I love Marisa. And my favourite enemy is Reisen U Inaba. Her fight is fantastic and her theme is amazing.
this one was my first Touhou game. My favourite character has to be Mystia, her overall character is very of my liking. However, while her theme is really really cool and all the themes in the game are astounding, my favourite award goes to Kagome Kagome, the raw power and feelings expressed in those trumpets get me deep in my soul. This game is very important for many reasons, one of them being that Lunarians are very important to the Touhou lore. Another reason is that its somewhat tied to the first and second Lunar War, and ultimately this game ties to Touhou 15 in some way. Will you cover someday the official mangas/books? what you are already doing is awesome so i dont want to ask more than what you can do. thanks for everything. I sense a distinct lack of memery in your video, Gaijin. There are two incredibly well known remixes from this set of songs: Overdrive by IOSYS (also the source of the EEEHHHHH??? EASY MODO? meme), which is a remix of Lunatic Eyes. The second is Tasukete Eirin, which is a remix of Flight of the Bamboo Cutter. Also, my favorite character from this game (and one of my favorites in the franchise) is Reisen, the useless bunbun.
well finally Gaijin Hunter found this gem TH8 is the best from many reason - friendly Difficult from all of series - good story - good game play (tag team) - good music for someone who being play Touhou I recommend Touhou 8 Imperishable Night for you first game.
Also quick conjecture of why IN might be so popular. Besides being an earlier game, it’s probably what made the theme of eastern story motif well known, reuses that motif in the stage four theme, stage four gives themes and boss fights to the two main characters of the series, and the game’s theme is really distinctly more Japanese than others, given the final boss. Also iirc ZUN originally planned for this to be the last game? Which’d mean he probably put a lot of time and effort into this one. Like with the unlockable playables and Last Words.
Mokou is my Number 1 for not just this game, but for the entire franchise. I even singled out a figurine of her at an anime convention one time. I'm not the kind of anime fan who gets figurines (I'm not a "waifu" kind of guy), but I figure I can understand why people do such things considering the feeling of veneration that led me to grab one myself. Her design in both aesthetic and emotional senses appeals to me strongly, as do the doujins involving her, particularly when their substance revolves around her immortality (often enough juxtaposed with Kaguya's). It was also wondrous to see even the smallest bit of additional character development for her upon her return to significant relevance in Urban Legend in Limbo, not to mention the distinct parallel that could then suddenly connect her Last Word attack to the highest point of glory for my favorite DBZ character, Vegeta. Not to mention she technically uses a hyped up version of that move as what could be considered to be the absolute FINAL/EXTRA STAGE BOSS of that game (Reisen's story takes place as a prelude to the next fighting game, Antinomy of Common Flowers, meaning that it would be the chronological final story, and Mokou is made her final opponent due to the shenanigans of Master/Slave switching that occurs between her and Reimu). ... But I'm sure you'll find your own way to cover THOSE stories when you get there. The fighting games can have a bit of a hard-to-interpret chronology, but I recall seeing information to suggest that such a chronology coherently exists. It'd be great to get that all sorted out in a more apparently available and accessible format.
My favorite new character from touhou 8 is Eirin. I just love the concept of like this god of knowledge from the moon who resides on earth because of what she feels was her fault in Kaguya's banishment
Ah Th 8. My first Touhou game I put extreme effort into and only one I 1cc'd lunatic on. The themes, the fast paced stage background during lv 4's throwdown. Marisa literally telling Reimu quote: "Now bitch, get out of the way" Mokou is fav of this game. Hands down. No questions. Her theme stole my heart when I first heard it. Then her spells oh God they were awesome (yes even the dreaded Fujiyama Volcano spell). I can't get over seeing the survival where she literally possesses you instead of properly reviving. (Hell if I could put The Chariot tarot card I made of her here, I would.) Even the fun detail of her "dying" and resurecting after each spell. She's high on my list of favorite Touhou girls. Easily top 5. The mad lad you actually did it. You used an Akatsuki Records song. And it's a personal fav (god bless Stack's vocals). Fun note. KILLOVE FIREPROOF is actually a triple theme combining aspects of Extend Ash - Person of Hourai, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter - Lunatic Princess, and Reach to the Moon, Immortal Smoke. (The sing titles on the stage and boss songs kinda look like Spell Card names huh? ) Sorry if I rambled, sir. I just love the Touhou series and games and it brings me endless joy seeing them get covered like this :) Excited to see if you'll cover Touhou 9: Phantasmagoria of Flower View, being a vs style bullet hell, or jump to the next conventional style game; Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith. I feel 9 and the .3, .5, and .8 games might get coverage after the current main series as they add new story and a few can favorite characters (Shikieiki, Hata No Kokoro, Suika Ibuki and so on) Have an awesome day sir! IN was my favorite for a long time, primarily due to the tag mechanic, the alternate paths, and just overall having a chaotic soundtrack which fits due to the origins of the characters and the moon (For anyone not following, Luna-Tic, ZUN's not just fond of references). Ultimately though MOF took the title after I learned how much of the series went off the rails, batshit, insane and stupid and I mean that in the most endearing way possible that stemmed from that game.
I got into Touhou a little bit after this game's release. It was thanks to fanart of Eirin Yagokoro, that I found on google. I read all I could find on her, then the game, and from there the series of Touhou itself.

your content is great, and serve as a good help for new touhou fans to help them understand the game, but there are some problems : tewi's theme is not kagome kagome, that's just the stage's theme, her theme is white flag of usa shrine while it is said that kaguya's theme represent her "losing control", ZUN never said anything about "having done bad things", it's more about "the one who must not change is changing" aka "she is losing her former self and evolving out of control". nothing else to say, thanks, this video is really good

Would've loved for you to explain the human/youkai bar mechanic as well as the time one since it's important to this game. Mokou N#1 and Reisen for encouraging people NOT to try easy mode
it might be bias since this was my first title but it still holds the place of my favorite title, being also the fist i 1cc normal (save for 15, wich is a special case) favorite char is mokou.
Too bad my laptop decided to refuse to launch this game :/ I guess windows 10 doesn’t like a game for 2004 😂 That aside, the soundtrack in this game is probably my favourite soundtrack of all time, with Gensokyo Millenium as my favourite song of all time :)
I'd like to add that Kaguya, being implied to be the actual princess Kaguya, was actually born on the Earth and not the moon. The original story has her being discovered in a bamboo stalk by an old farmer (iirc) couple, who raise her. Hence, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter. There were a bunch of suitors who wanted to marry her, but she didn't want to be married, so she gave them each an "Impossible Request" to ensure that they'd never complete it. She would eventually be returned to the moon. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or if I missed something big.
Wonderful job on your work! Just a little correction, Stage5 theme isn't Tewi's, it's just the theme song of the stage. Touhou 9 introduces a unique theme for Tewi since she's a boss in her own right

Gahhh thanks for this! I love like all the characters, so hard to decide my favorite. I think I would say in terms of song tho… Maiden’s Capriccio, voyage 1969, eternal night (both), history of the moon, extend ash, and mystical maple. (But I really love them all)
Versus the Moriya Shrine based subplot and the Gensokyo creation plot, I believe that the lunarians plot tends to be consistently the most interesting. IN has hands down the most solid gameplay of all the games to date, and its soundtrack is only beaten by EoSD and SA imo. I hope you do one of these for LoLK and and SA too, as those are my favorites

IN is probably my favourite game of all time. While its not my first touhou game, its definitely one of my favorite. Its probably the very first game i really considered pure "art". The way that the stage flows with the music really shows me how amazing video games music could be. Not to mention the danmaku's beauty and the characters design. Its probably one of the reason i started being a touhou artist
Fun fact about Eternal Dream ~ Mystic Maple: it's actually a new arrangement of the credits theme from Touhou 5: Mystic Square, where it's just called Mystic Maple. ZUN still loved the theme, so he brought it to Windows audiences, as it suited IN perfectly.

I love Touhou the fan animation beautifully made and Senya/Yuuhei Satellite made the songs more alluringly beautifully and mesmerizing.
Havent finished the (all) shooting game yet (easy/normal/hard/lunatic. I'm a noob) but finished the (all) fighting game (easy & normal).

This is probably one of my favourite games, i like basically all of the music, it's super unique among other games of this series, and got some cool new faces to come with it.
This game was really big and amazing with how many things it did, and i feel like if it was to be, let's say, a final game to the franchise, it would certainly be a final bang.
And yeah, Mokou's my favourite, not only cuz' i really liked to use her in the "newer" fighting games against friends, but also cuz', you know, fire, cool design, cool backstory, what's there not to love about forever rebirthing phoenix?

This was my first Touhou game back when I was a teen! I'm almost 30 and I only just now got the English version and finding out what exactly happens in this game. The music and gameplay is just so damn good it's hard to find another Touhou that even comes close.

My favourite touhou game series with a few of the most lovely songs for me.
My favourite team is the Marisa and Alice team, because, I love Marisa.
And my favourite enemy is Reisen U Inaba. Her fight is fantastic and her theme is amazing.

this one was my first Touhou game. My favourite character has to be Mystia, her overall character is very of my liking.
However, while her theme is really really cool and all the themes in the game are astounding, my favourite award goes to Kagome Kagome, the raw power and feelings expressed in those trumpets get me deep in my soul.
This game is very important for many reasons, one of them being that Lunarians are very important to the Touhou lore. Another reason is that its somewhat tied to the first and second Lunar War, and ultimately this game ties to Touhou 15 in some way.
Will you cover someday the official mangas/books? what you are already doing is awesome so i dont want to ask more than what you can do. thanks for everything.

There are two incredibly well known remixes from this set of songs: Overdrive by IOSYS (also the source of the EEEHHHHH??? EASY MODO? meme), which is a remix of Lunatic Eyes.
The second is Tasukete Eirin, which is a remix of Flight of the Bamboo Cutter.
Also, my favorite character from this game (and one of my favorites in the franchise) is Reisen, the useless bunbun.

for someone who being play Touhou I recommend Touhou 8 Imperishable Night for you first game.
Also quick conjecture of why IN might be so popular. Besides being an earlier game, it’s probably what made the theme of eastern story motif well known, reuses that motif in the stage four theme, stage four gives themes and boss fights to the two main characters of the series, and the game’s theme is really distinctly more Japanese than others, given the final boss. Also iirc ZUN originally planned for this to be the last game? Which’d mean he probably put a lot of time and effort into this one. Like with the unlockable playables and Last Words.
Mokou is my Number 1 for not just this game, but for the entire franchise. I even singled out a figurine of her at an anime convention one time. I'm not the kind of anime fan who gets figurines (I'm not a "waifu" kind of guy), but I figure I can understand why people do such things considering the feeling of veneration that led me to grab one myself. Her design in both aesthetic and emotional senses appeals to me strongly, as do the doujins involving her, particularly when their substance revolves around her immortality (often enough juxtaposed with Kaguya's).
It was also wondrous to see even the smallest bit of additional character development for her upon her return to significant relevance in Urban Legend in Limbo, not to mention the distinct parallel that could then suddenly connect her Last Word attack to the highest point of glory for my favorite DBZ character, Vegeta. Not to mention she technically uses a hyped up version of that move as what could be considered to be the absolute FINAL/EXTRA STAGE BOSS of that game (Reisen's story takes place as a prelude to the next fighting game, Antinomy of Common Flowers, meaning that it would be the chronological final story, and Mokou is made her final opponent due to the shenanigans of Master/Slave switching that occurs between her and Reimu).
... But I'm sure you'll find your own way to cover THOSE stories when you get there. The fighting games can have a bit of a hard-to-interpret chronology, but I recall seeing information to suggest that such a chronology coherently exists. It'd be great to get that all sorted out in a more apparently available and accessible format.
My favorite new character from touhou 8 is Eirin. I just love the concept of like this god of knowledge from the moon who resides on earth because of what she feels was her fault in Kaguya's banishment
Eastern Youkai Beauty brings back some insane PTSD from endlessly grinding those Last Word spells. Fuck me sideways they were a pain in my rectum.
Ah Th 8. My first Touhou game I put extreme effort into and only one I 1cc'd lunatic on. The themes, the fast paced stage background during lv 4's throwdown. Marisa literally telling Reimu quote: "Now bitch, get out of the way"
Mokou is fav of this game. Hands down. No questions. Her theme stole my heart when I first heard it. Then her spells oh God they were awesome (yes even the dreaded Fujiyama Volcano spell). I can't get over seeing the survival where she literally possesses you instead of properly reviving. (Hell if I could put The Chariot tarot card I made of her here, I would.) Even the fun detail of her "dying" and resurecting after each spell. She's high on my list of favorite Touhou girls. Easily top 5.
The mad lad you actually did it. You used an Akatsuki Records song. And it's a personal fav (god bless Stack's vocals). Fun note. KILLOVE FIREPROOF is actually a triple theme combining aspects of Extend Ash - Person of Hourai, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter - Lunatic Princess, and Reach to the Moon, Immortal Smoke. (The sing titles on the stage and boss songs kinda look like Spell Card names huh? )

Excited to see if you'll cover Touhou 9: Phantasmagoria of Flower View, being a vs style bullet hell, or jump to the next conventional style game; Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith. I feel 9 and the .3, .5, and .8 games might get coverage after the current main series as they add new story and a few can favorite characters (Shikieiki, Hata No Kokoro, Suika Ibuki and so on)

IN was my favorite for a long time, primarily due to the tag mechanic, the alternate paths, and just overall having a chaotic soundtrack which fits due to the origins of the characters and the moon (For anyone not following, Luna-Tic, ZUN's not just fond of references). Ultimately though MOF took the title after I learned how much of the series went off the rails, batshit, insane and stupid and I mean that in the most endearing way possible that stemmed from that game.

I got into Touhou a little bit after this game's release. It was thanks to fanart of Eirin Yagokoro, that I found on google. I read all I could find on her, then the game, and from there the series of Touhou itself.
I came into IN being familiar with the legend of Kaguya-hime so I already had a bias towards her being my favorite character. I can say that over time though, I warmed up to Erin, Mokou and Reisen and would put them on the same branch of the tree on my

tewi's theme is not kagome kagome, that's just the stage's theme, her theme is white flag of usa shrine
while it is said that kaguya's theme represent her "losing control", ZUN never said anything about "having done bad things", it's more about "the one who must not change is changing" aka "she is losing her former self and evolving out of control".

I heard that Sakuya Izayoi and Youmu Konpaku were supposed to be Stage 4 Bosses as well in Imperishable Night.
Yeah but due to time constraints was cut. There was also that phantasm stage that may or may not feature Sakuya as the main protagonist of that stage.

I'd like to add that Kaguya, being implied to be the actual princess Kaguya, was actually born on the Earth and not the moon. The original story has her being discovered in a bamboo stalk by an old farmer (iirc) couple, who raise her. Hence, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter. There were a bunch of suitors who wanted to marry her, but she didn't want to be married, so she gave them each an "Impossible Request" to ensure that they'd never complete it. She would eventually be returned to the moon. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or if I missed something big.
Wonderful job on your work! Just a little correction, Stage5 theme isn't Tewi's, it's just the theme song of the stage. Touhou 9 introduces a unique theme for Tewi since she's a boss in her own right
