The sound quality of both band and recording equipment for 1970 is extremely impressive. This is nearly 60 years ago. Love it.

That traditional Black Dyke sound, nothing like it. Long gone sadly. What a great band...you don't hear bands sound like that anymore, both musically and sound wise.

I could name more players from that band than I could of today's Black Dyke ( 2022 ) . Some real legends there that are sadly no longer with us .

@@Mark64W Yes, l could name most of the players in Dyke back in those days; the line up of players hardly changed. These days players are in and out before you know it.
I remember listening to John Clough in an interview. I recall him saying Dyke were better in the 70's than any other period. He said the band players can't do today what they did back then; the player lineups were so stable and the band worked so well together. Of course modern Dyke play brilliantly and faster than ever, but they sound like they are going through the motions these days, the musicality is less now...kind of makes this pondasher sad, none-the-less Dyke will always be my band.

@@TheSproutarian I totally agree with you . I knew John Clough a few years back and he told me in his years at Dyke they went through two five year periods of not changing any players . Everyone knew what each other was going to do musically , even though they had the odd difference after band . There was a lot of ' strong characters' in the band back then but they were and still arguably the best band of all time .
Nowadays it seems to be a forever revolving door rather than legends like Messrs Shepherd , McCann , Clough , Turton , Slinger , Jackson and all the others .

I'd rate GUS as a better sounding band from this time. I prefer the Dyke sound from slightly later - listen to the swagger from them under Brand and Newsome ( not a bad team, eh?) accompanying JS in Cleopatra. Better to have change than no band at all because so many bands extant in 1970 don't exist at all in 2022. Btw does anyone remember a TV series from the early 1970s presented by Brian Matthew broadcast on Sunday afternoons called " Where There's Brass" . I'm sure Dyke appeared in one episode under RN with JS playing a solo called Ragamuffin.

What are you talking about? Black Dyke is still the best in the world by FAR.

Can I ask where this recording was taken from. Is the rest of that Blue Peter episode available? I ask as my dad was the drummer and I seem to remember a presenter spoke with him. Would be nice to watch that again.

Bands don't sound as good as that anymore.
