Switch from Dawn to a carnauba wax car wash. The carnauba wax coats the brass and makes it a touch slicker, yet still gets the brass squeaky clean.

I have found that if you put some water in the lower part of the brass separator that will break the surface tension that make the pins ‘stick’ to the brass. Not perfect but it helps collect the pins in the bottom and not with the brass. I would also pick up the Frankfort Magnet tool it helps with those small pins very difficult to pick with your fingers. Lyman makes a nice pin/brass separator “Dual Sifter System” which has a brass separator on top and fits into another sifter with a fine mesh to gather the stainless steel pins which works well. My experience since picking my Frankfort Stainless Steel Tumbler several years ago. Does make them clean and shiny with a few more steps to the process. I have used a the Lyman 1200 for 30+ years and it is still going strong, but I do like the stainless steel pin system. Looks like most companies are starting to offer this system as well. Good Video to show the process. Best to all.

Here is the cheapest and easiest way to dry brass if you have a front loading dryer with drying shelf for shoes, etc. Go to Walmart and get a mesh zippered bag for drying delicates and such. Fill with the wet brass, and place on the drying shelf. I use low heat for an hour or so. Dry brass!

Man I swore off those pins the day I tried wet tumbling 260 Remington and found a bunch of pins wedged and all my case necks! Drove me pissed! Then I remembered that my mother used to clean brass with ketchup. So I took the pins out of my Tumblr and went down and bought a can of tomato paste and mixed it with some hot water and a little bit of vinegar. Cleanest brass I've ever cleaned. And it takes seconds to rinse off. Give it a try, I promise you it is simply amazing.....

The same method i use. I don't like the the Frankford Arsenal separator, pins go everywhere. I prefer to use the strainer caps that came with the FA wet tumbler and use gold panning strainers to get all the pins out. Much more effective and quicker. Always prefer to decap before I wet tumble. Comes out like brand new brass. I wouldn't use any kind of wax. Just Hornady Spray Lube for 223 and pistol. Imperial Case Lube for precision loads. No issuses ever with my Hornady LNL AP. NIce work with the video.

Really enjoyed your video. I stopped dry tumbling about four years ago and I don't think I will ever go back to that process. Wet tumbling produces a much cleaner product and the waste goes down the drain. However, after experimenting with many different wet recipes I believe I have created as many not so good looking cases as I have shiny brass. Another RUclips provider (TreeTopFlier) has an excellent video to help solve the problem of random bad looking wet tumbled brass and suggests that it is important to use a recipe with a neutral Ph. I purchased Ph test strips, litmus paper, on Amazon and found that with my water (central Florida east coast) and a tablespoon or more of Dawn and one 9mm brass case full of Lemishine and stainless pins and hot water I get a neutral Ph and the brass comes out clean like new and looks nice and shiny each time. I also use the FA tumbler to separate the pins, to rinse and to get rid of most of the excess water. I then pour the brass on to a towel laying flat on my bench and then pick it up like a hammock and roll the brass back and forth from end to end to get rid of virtually all of the water and then into my Lyman dryer. Thank you for your video.

Usually when I have a dull batch it’s generally from tumbling brass I have sized with case lube. I now just re clean rifle brass after sizing with my dry tumbler. Occasionally if I am particularly proud of some hollow points or defense rounds I will dry tumble after loading to get them factory fresh.

You do know all the toxic Wastewater from your wet tumbling process that you throw down the drain goes into the water treatment plant and winds up coming out of your tap?
One to two hours in a vibrating tumbler is perfectly sufficient for cleaning brass.
      Quicker, neater, cheaper, easier.
Throw in 3 or so 2" square torn pieces of USED dryer sheets to collect dust.

When the load is done into the dryer it goes. The results is clean, dry, reloadable brass. Due to simply the weight I only run 50 rounds at a time. Making do with what one has.

Thanks for the vid. I'm a commercial loader, and with all the business interruptions lately, I lost my main supplier of Corncob media. Been considering wet pin tumbling for a while, it just requires some big changes to my process to make work. A big thing for me is applying that carnauba layer after, it protects the brass and inhibits corrosion. I think all the cheap-o-jet dry is just breaking the surface tension, I don't think it's doing much to chemically clean the brass like the Citric, sulfamic, or phosphoric acids might.
TBH, when you held up a coffee can of brass and said "this is a lot" I had to blush a bit. I run a lot more new brass than I used to, but when I used to process a lot of brass, tumbling was usually done in cement mixers with proportions measured in 5-gallon buckets. I think I need to keep looking, but thanks for the vid, it showed me a few aspects of wet tumbling I hadn't seen before.

How you doing squatch! Great video, very informative. I've been reloading for quite some time now and I would only offer you one critique if even you need it. In that size of a wet tumbler, do everything just like you're doing it except add 1/4 of a cup of vinegar to the mix. That will be the difference between night and day. But once you are done give them a baking soda bath. Fill up a 5 gallon bucket full of water put 1/4 of a cup of baking soda in it and then give them that fast. That will neutralize the vinegar and leave you with some very clean and shiny brass. It actually does more to clean out the flash hole too. Happy trails my friend keep those videos coming.

In regard to the "hiccup", it's hard to believe that too clean is the problem and dirtier brass solves the problem. I have no experience with this but it is known that tumbling with SS pins can ding the mouths of cases.
A buddy of mine that does precision reloading discovered a bunch of reloads that wouldn't chamber. He found the problem was a tiny edge on the mouth of the case formed during the wet pin tumbling. He did some research and found that others were having this problem as well.
So it might be that it's not "too clean" that's causing the hiccup but edges on the mouth of the brass.
I'm not saying it isn't from too clean, I'm just offering another possibility.

Just my opinion but I believe Lemishine is just a weaker version of citric acid. Built my own version of a stainless media tumbler years ago. Works ok but is a pain for 223/556. (too much time to get the media out) I clean and prep primer pockets any way. with the cost of primers now I don't want to waste any and prime by hand. When I start to run low I go to Wally World at the end of canning season and buy citric acid used for canning a lot cheaper then. Dump brass in a bucket with citric acid and warm water and stir it around by hand, Rinse and put it in a salad spinner to get the water out then put it in a food dehydrator. I then put it in a tumbler with corn cob and some car polish. I like a little shine on my brass. If you are lucky you'll have some where with different size corn cob for polishing. I'm still working from a bag I bought several year ago. If so take a empty case with you and they can size the cob to go through the primer hole. Salad spinners are a few bucks at most Dollar stores and dehydrators can sometimes be had from second hand stores. Like I said just my opinion but I sure could have saved a lot of time and money by not using stainless media..

    Couple questions:
1- can you get rid of the “Dillon Hiccup” by using a case lube?
2- Where do you get most of your used brass?
3- Do you mostly de-prime before washing? And if so, how? Hand de-primer or use the press? Seems like if the press de-primes as part of the progression it’s kinda waste of time to deprive as a separate step. But I see most RUclips vids and chat rooms talking about wet cleaning deprimed brass and I know there are advantages like cleanliness and double checking swage etc. thanks in advance for answering my NOOB questions! Your vids are really helpful.

    • @SquatchReloaded
      @SquatchReloaded  3 года назад +2

      1. Case lube will help alleviate most of the Dillon Hiccup. For pistol brass I use One Shot lube. There are other profile powder/expander funnels you can get that claim to eliminate it. I dont have any experience with them. Keep in mind the hiccup is more of an annoyance not a problem in quality.
      2. I get most of my brass from a local range.
      3. I always de prime before cleaning but that is entirely personal preference.

The dillon powder funnel sticking is a really simple fix. I had some left over 3000, 5000 grit wet/dry sand paper from a small automotive touchup job and used that to polish it out. You only need to hit the very end of the nub that slides into the case. I didnt' chuck it up in a drill or anything. You want to go really really slow. I then followed it up with the 5000 grit and flitz. All of this was done with plenty of water. You also want to thoroughly clean/rinse it out. Aluminum oxide from the sand paper can imbed and while it might not appear to do anything, I don't like the idea of it transferring to my barrels..
My results were really good. There's still a tiny bit of friction but none of the "sticking"- it's completely gone.. If you do it right and your press shouldn't need any adjustment. The flare is about 3/4 inch from the tip so it's easy to avoid if you take your time. I was tempted to put it drill and give it a 'commercial' quality spin. I did it by hand and it was 90% effective.

Great Videos with all of the details that you need. One question that nobody talks about is what is the purpose of cleaning your brass? What are the critical areas that need to be clean as with some range brass the inside of the brass doesn't clean very easily. So what is an acceptable level of brass being clean. I know that pistol brass requirements are different than riffle brass. Any help or video would be great.

Unless you are making jewelry out of your cleaned and Polished brass, One to two hours in a vibrating tumbler is perfectly sufficient for cleaning brass.
    Quicker, neater, cheaper, easier.
Throw in 3 or so 2" square torn pieces of USED dryer sheets to collect dust.
