  • What a long tiring trip this was. it was great weather but very warm.
My good friend Jamie and myself have for a few years wanted to give the sleeper to Penzance a go, but what was holding us up to fix a date when there wasn't any rail strikes.
We departed Birmingham at 18.00 hrs to London Euston on a Avanti which had good A/C, then bused it to London Paddington.
The A/C in the birth was good and regarding the quality ride on a MK 3 sleeper was so much better than the rubbish MK 5s to Scotland, ok you don't have the toilet and shower but the ride is so much smoother on the British made Mk 3s.
After arriving in Penzance a few minutes late we got a bus to Lands End, then back to Penzance to get a Castle Class HST to Plymouth.
At Plymouth all went down hill as we travelled on XC first class to Birmingham which I think was a waste of money as the service from the staff was bad and the A/C was poor.
We arrived at at Birmingham at 18.55 which made it a 25 hour trip. Date was 17th & 18th July 2024

I feel your pain buddy travelling on a XC Voyager PLY to BNS. They are shocking. Noisy, dirty, poor Wi-fi, and can get all too busy when you end up on a set, consisting of 4 coaches. Great video. Long old trip. Memories though. 😉😉

Looked like a great trip. You will recall I’ve been on the Penzance to Paddington sleeper twice but on the cushions. Maybe one day I’ll treat myself…if they keep it running. You picked a lovely day to go. The sunshine really makes Cornwall look beautiful. You didn’t have long in Lands End though did you.

Oh yes indeed Dave the MK 3s are so much better than the MK 5s, I just wish I could sleep more when I use a sleeper train.
I would like to get down that way again but I'm running out of weeks before the clocks change again, cheers Mike.

Great journey on that Night Riviera…much better than the awful GWR IET for a long journey like that 😎🇬🇧🌴 We holidayed in Penzance back in August 2006…a lovely place 😎🌴 Great to see the few remaining Castle HST’s at work…😎👍🏽

Hello Matt, yes it would have been better to have had longer in Cornwall, but it was a good experience to try the MK 3s.
You must have thought they were good to use them more than once.

So good and bad Mike hopefully more good than bad, thanks to XC. A big difference between the two rail operators and im not at all suprised. I hope it didn't ruin your trip. Wonderful scenery throughout and Penzance was gorgeous. Even the 57's and Mk 3's looked really smart and clean. and the food didn't look bad either! Is there a part two coming along Mike? Really enjoyed, thanks for taking us wuth you, cheers Nick.

No Nick it was all good, like job done sort of think as it was a day of not filming freight trains as there isn't any to film down there really.
But I was pleased to get three Castle Class HST while having our lunchtime food.
I was very impressed with how clean the toilets were on the sleeper, well done GWR but a shame they can't run proper trains during the day. Cheers Mike.

Alhough not on a sleeper from London but XC from Edinburgh and return, going down to see my new great grandchildren. I hope the XC service is better than yours was, although it will be out of season. Take care mate, Colin.

That's NOT EVEN HALF the train it used to be in the early to mid 1970's:
A Class 52 heading the 12 coach 00.05hrs Paddington - Penzance Sleeper, with 1 Sleeper detached at Plymouth.
Paddington also had the 22.50 Paddington - Milford Haven Sleeper / Passenger / Parcels to deal with, on top of all else. Railway Operations Paddington, Control & and RUclipsrs don't know they're born! Piece of piss now, operationally.
And - Loco on rear to Reading!! Laughable!😂
