  • Today, I've got an awesome technique to share that'll give your photos a dreamy and romantic touch. It's called the "soft focus effect," a favorite among photographers in various fields, including weddings, movies, and commercials.
Traditionally, photographers used specialized filters on their lenses to achieve this effect. But with digital photography, many modern cameras offer it as a digital effect. And guess what? You can also create this enchanting look using Adobe Photoshop's tools like lens blur and layer transparency. Let's get started.
    Duplicate the Background:
Start by duplicating your background image. Simply press CTRL/CMD + J on your keyboard - no need to name it; this is the only copy we'll create.
    Apply Lens Blur Filter:
Go to the filter menu, find "blur," and select "lens blur." This mimics a real camera lens effect. For soft focus in portraits, set the radius to around 60 pixels; adjust for smaller images. Click OK to apply.
    Adjust Layer Transparency:
In the layers palette, control the blurry layer's transparency, like adjusting a curtain for light. Aim for around 30-40% transparency to keep the clear layer visible. Adjust for stronger or weaker blur based on your preference.
    Create an Oval Vignette:
Adopt a portrait photographer's trick - create a soft blur around the subject. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw an oval. Undo mistakes with CTRL+D (or CMD+D on a Mac).
Apply Lens Blur to the Vignette:
Select the area outside the oval by choosing "inverse" under "select." Apply lens blur to the outside area with a larger radius, like 80-100 pixels, for a dreamy haze.
    Fine-Tune Sharpness:
Use the Soft Eraser Tool to delicately remove blur from specific areas on your subject's face, keeping them sharp and focused.
    Add a Color Lookup Adjustment:
Perfect your photo by adding a "color lookup adjustment." It's like selecting a filter to match your desired mood or style - warm, cool, vibrant, or any other that suits your image.

the problem with your actions is, that they only work in english version of PS. The reason is very simple: you do not rename new layers via the edit menu. So a new layer is automatically names as e.g. layer 1. In the german version however the action (without renamed layers) ties to find "Ebene 1", which it cannot find, of course. So please improve your actions by giving each layer and each group a spefcific name and not the PS standard names.
