  • TOPIC: In this important video I discuss the state of 5 comics over a 20 year period. I've heard rumblings from collectors that comics are no longer investments, and I'm here to show you they still are. Its just all about timing and knowing over the long haul that Blue Chip Comics will always do well

    Cause auction prices are coming down on books, people think they will continue to come down forever and when prices are rising, people think they will rise forever, people do the same thing with stocks. Nothing rises or falls forever

    Comic books have peaks and valleys, just like every other investment, including stocks. I agree that if you're willing to buy a Marvel key and you're willing to keep it for 10 yrs. or more, you will make money. The comic boom was an aberration. It may take a while longer if you bought during the boom, but you'll still make money if you're in it for the long run.

    The best way to get at some of these keys is to trade if you can. Then try to get a grade as high as possible. FF 48 is now a great time to by as it has come down significantly, but eventually will go back up as the next generation of buyer comes of age.

    I think you gave a lot of very good examples, but let’s be real if you hold anything long enough it’s going up. The house my grandparents bought in the 60s for $20,000 is worth 350,000 at this point. It’s called inflation. If you have an old Edsel That was purchased for a couple thousand dollars today it too, would be worth lots of money even though it was the garbage car of a generation. But for those of us who love our comic books, I happen to agree the Comics I to be collected and not flipped, hold them long enough and even that 90s X-Men number one might be worth something? OK maybe about that book

    Another excellent vid Laurence. I collect Marvel, because I love them. I got hooked watching the tv cartoons in ‘66. I am not buying for investment. Latest acquisition was an FF #27 in 7.0 for $195. Just filling in holes I should have filled decades ago. Love you, your insight, and love this hobby.

    • @MtHockey
      @MtHockey 11 месяцев назад +1

      Agree that Laurence makes excellent videos with great content.
      Old silver age kid here as well, and filling holes in my old Marvel collection as well. As Laurence stated, timing is everything. I have one more hole to fill in my FF collection (FF#18), then I will have from 15 to 101 (all the Kirby's). My dilemma is, is it worth trying to fill in under #15 due to cost, especially for FF #1? Same with my ASM collection. I have all the Ditko's from #3 on, but I don't know if I can ever get the 2 major grails prior to that, so is it worth it? My fear is that young people (I am a recently retired middle school art teacher - thanks to the influence of Marvel artists on me as a kid), no longer read comics, as they are totally into MANGA or tech content, and are only exposed to the Marvel movies. Will the value of these books carry over into the upcoming generations if there is no interest by those generations?

      I have to agree with you. However, these are books that I have dreamed of having since I was a middle school kid in the 60's, but the reality is that they are now the toys of the rich, or those who were fortunate enough to get them at the right place and time. Sometimes we have to learn to be happy with what we have!

    • @TT-fq7pl
      @TT-fq7pl 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@MtHockey Yes indeed, but as the saying goes, when a collection stops growing, it's no longer a collection; it's a mausoleum. Personally, the high prices put on certain major keys actually helps me, as I might spend a couple of thousand irresponsibly, but no amount of nostalgia will convince me to pay tens of thousands on a single comic!

    You sound really confused about the basics of market dynamics and collecting. If people are panic selling, it drives down prices which means you'd be able to buy more comics at cheaper prices. If you actually believe in the long term market, then that would be an opportunity but you're telling people NOT to sell.
    Telling people not to sell comics means you're not actually buying comics, which means you really don't think they're great a investment. The cherry picked data you're reading doesn't actually have any predictive value.

    • @mightycomicsandcollectibles
      @mightycomicsandcollectibles  11 месяцев назад

      It depends what side of the fence u are on. Take a broad look at where prices were to where they are now. And 20 to 30 years down the line I expect them to be higher. If u buy and plan to sell in less than 10 years it won’t be worth while. The reason why I say don’t sell is bc there has been a massive influx of books for sale which drives down prices. Not all comics should be bought. In fact most shouldn’t if youre worried about money. There are only a handful. If you’re a short term buyer don’t buy. If you’re a 20 plus year buyer then by all means. Thanks for watching
