    Wow that’s very interesting. It’s really inspiring to see how everything we learn no matter how easy or hard it seems it gets put into practice to solve real problems. I also applied for a theoretical physics internship for this summer (it’s going to be online), I hope I can get it, fingers crossed!

      alicedoesphysics Oh in fact I still haven’t heard back from them on whether I got it or not. But even if I didn’t get it I already planned to use this time to stretch my programming skills plus I have a good reading list that I’m excited to start.

    This is so interesting! I've just finished 1st year, I'd love to do an internship at some point, but it sounds so daunting, like if you don't know much about what you're doing in the internship if that makes sense ahah

    Hi Alice, Eldest did a first year internship at Lancaster (uni where shes at) Your right, its difficult to get one, and super super rare. She offered to do a project at Lancaster which was unpaid since the paid ones had gone, and she got it. Although she did not get paid for it, it was the experience more than anything in the hope that it might help her academic CV. She worked on Tau neutrinos for a supervisor at the uni who works with DUNE and it was done remotely and in her own time. Shes currently applying for the second year ** update she had an internview, and got a paid project with lancaster and DUNE for second year on proton decay and one of the researchers works with Cern, so fingers crossed she can get Cern in yr 3 next year :)

    I just finished my first year and I am doing an internship similar to what you did in second year summer - experimental particle physics. I am also running monte carlo simulations via GEANT4 and then processing the stuff blah blah blah 😂 At first I thought nobody would have done this but watching your video cheers me up! Btw did you use ROOT by CERN? For plots and histograms. I am having a good time learning new stuff.

    i really want to join the Lancaster cycling club when i get there in Sept but i’m not really a cyclist lol.
    i really enjoyed your running vid and you’re defo my fav Lancs youtuber.
    thanks so much 💕.

    That's so cool you used data from MINOS! I used MINOS Far Detector data for my undergraduate project, though I didn't use neutrino data I used cosmic ray muon data. (Background particles it saw from cosmic rays.) The goal of my project was to find the shadows of the moon and sun; so basically the moon and sun absorb cosmic rays, so if you were to look at those cosmic rays from earth (through the muons) you should see a sort of shadow. Like a solar eclipse basically but with cosmic rays instead of light. It was a great experience (and I did get those shadows finally), even though I didn't do any internships in undergrad (besides an outreach one). I'm gonna work on the DUNE experiment in grad school, which will succeed the NOvA experiment (which succeeded MINOS).
    Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Alice! The first project you described seems mind-blowing really, sooo cool! By the way, I noticed you said knowing how to code was an advantage when applying for some internships that required it, which language did you know/which do you recommend? I've read good things about Phyton, and you also mentioned C++, but is there any specific one better/more useful for a beginner than any other? Very nice video!! Have a good day!

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад +3

      hey thanks fabrizio!! 😁😁 so I learnt java at uni in early second year, and then taught myself C++ / python as I went along in the internships (and later in the MSc learnt some matlab + mathematica too) - I don't think it matters which language you start with as learning the "logic" is the important and transferable thing, but python would probably be the easiest and there are a lot of resources for it online which would help (and unless you hate yourself, please don't start with C++ 😅) x

    • @argentinephenomenologist

      @@alicedoesphysics Yeah I'll definitely start with Python, and thanks for the heads up haha!! Thanks Alice!!

    I do undergad research for the MINOS far detector analyzing cosmic ray muon Neutrinos! (Even though the detector is no longer operational it has much data to be analyzed still). Small world hearing you did an internship for that!

    amazing video Alice. I'm going to be a physics student in a couple of months and these internships sound very interesting. but where I live (Iraq) we don't have internships. my plan to finish my bachelor's degree here in Iraq and then continue by hopefully getting a scholarship outside. dose internships play a big part of getting a scholarship?

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад +2

      thank you, and good luck for your degree, hope you enjoy it! 😁 it completely depends on the scholarship, sorry - maybe have a look at the ones you're interested in?

    Would you mind making a video about the pros and cons of choosing a masters course, say in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics vs a more specialized course(Particle Physics for example).Which would be more beneficial for a career in Research?

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад +3

      honestly you can't judge how specialised a course is just by the title (e.g. my master's you could have done every single module in theoretical particle physics if you wanted, which is very niche) so it's you'd have to look up each master's you were interested in and compare the syllabus to your own personal interests - and in terms of "more beneficial for a career in research", again, for research in what? it completely depends which area - hope makes sense

    Could you post the companies who funded the internships? And also any info on companies that help fund postgraduate master degrees?

    • @alicedoesphysics
      @alicedoesphysics  4 года назад +1

      they weren't funded by companies, they were funded by the two charities which I named in the video - the ogden trust, although like I mentioned they no longer fund internships, and the north west branch of the institute of physics
      I only looked up scholarships for my particular masters, so cannot be much help generally unfortunately (my scholarship came from my college at oxford)

      don't know if you are looking at oxford or cambridge (I only applied there for postgrad so only looked at those scholarships, so possibly not useful) but just in case you are: both unis have a great search tool on their respective websites which is v useful for seeing what's available for each course 😊
