Music from Chris Heria Workout Music
Love the music in the background. Gets rid of the awkward silence that often occurs in videos like this. Also, a very crisp and straight forward video! Thank you
Appreciate the feedback. Thank you
Great video thanks. Keep doing them, you are helping a lot of us on ever tighter budgets, but love and want to care for our Rebels. Thank you sir.
Slight, dude, I appreciate you man. Thanks for all these videos.
Appreciate your comment. Thank you.
Appreciate the info. Just bought a 2017 and I'm pretty sure (other than upgrades) no maintenance has been done. Going to do oil, brake fluid, and coolant when the OD hits 4k. Thanks for what you're doing!
Thanks! I have many maintenance videos you may find helpful. Follow the “rebel maintenance” playlist.
Thank you, I changed coolant this morning.
Thanks for putting up the part # for the copper washers :) Always makes you look more competent when you go to the Stealership to order stuff :D
Not a problem, I try to include all part numbers to inform the rider. Thanks for watching.
jeepers! i don't believe i can do this. great video, but i just don't have the confidence in myself to do this right. my bike is my only transportation, if i screw something up, i am walking. saving this(as all your video's) in case i get the will and urge to tackle this. just seems like a lot of work for my dumb a--! but i do appreciate the tutorial.
Oh it only looks worse the further we go into this “series” lol. It’s really not that bad though. Yet I completely understand your hesitation.
I appreciate the comment David.
Thanks 👍
Great video, thanks for all the details
Never done a flush but my reservoir looks low should I do one? be concern? or top it off?
Service is recommended based on mileage. If you’re at this interval then, yes, I’d do this service. If not… top up the reservoir would be best.
Thank you for this mate, just bought my first bike and needed to do this. I have cmx500a,
Are your videos in this series apply also to Honda Rebel 2023?
Absolutely! Most videos will work with your bike.
Brilliant. So helpful Thank you. I have a Rebel 500 2023 1000 miles and I keep reading about this engine having water pump leaks etc. Do you know if the 2023 has this issue or have Honda sorted the problem out yet?
The leaks tend to be rebel 1100 specific. Not to say the odd 500 didn’t have some issues as well… just not as common.
@@SLIGHT_ Thanks Slight. I’ll keep my fingers crossed with my Rebel 500. Would there be any chance you could do a video on a water pump repair for a 500 Rebel?
Your videos are excellent quality and so helpful to somebody like me especially being on a tight budget. Please keep making these video as we need people like you.
@@petrovski1948 if I end up doing one I’ll make a video of course. Thanks for your support!
i need some help. when i go to fill up my reservoir tank the coolant comes out from one of the 4 lines at the bottom. I try to follow the hose-line, and figure out how to stop this from happening. I cant figure it out. it’s 2023 rebel 500
The middle hose is the radiator reserve overflow tube. So that makes sense.
When is it leaking out? (While the bike is running or turned off?) Confirm the overflow is between the high and low marks. This is shown on the bottle.
If it’s happening while to bike is running. Sounds like you have an air lock. Have that rad cap off to bleed the system. Then try again.
Let me know if that helps dude.
Do you need to remove, drain, and clean the reserve tank? The manual seems to include it as part of the coolant replacement. It looks like a huge pain to do. I see someone asked about the reservoir so not sure if you answered the question already
Not a huge deal if you don’t… technically you should be doing it. It is a huge pain to do.
Was this done on a 2018 500 or a different year model? Just curious cause planning on doing this with my 2018 500 later down the road when its time to do so.
This was completed on my personal cmx500 (2020) same engine throughout them all though.
Man SLIGHT_, I struggle with it for no reason spilled coolant everywhere,
how long did u burp the radiator?
Does the radiator need to be completely full? Isn’t that what the coolant reservoir is for? Thank You
Doesn’t take too long to burp. Basically you want it to operating temperature (closed loop) fans should come on…. Yet… The overflow will adjust sure. But it’s best to fill as much as you can. Remember you still need to install the cap though.
Sorry to hear about the spill.
Hey I also ride a rebel 500, I’ve been having trouble with my clutch it’s not gearing back to first when I stop. Im wondering if you could do a video on how to replace clutch plates
Is the clutch pulled in? What’s your mileage on yours. Clutches last a while in these rebels. Most commonly it’s a clutch cable adjustment issue. Unless it’s worn.
Absolutely I will do this video when I complete it.
Try a simple clutch cable adjustment first. Start at the top and adjust there first to see if that helps.
@@SLIGHT_ I’ve adjusted the clutch cable at top and bottom and I’ve also taken it in and gotten it adjusted seems to work better sometimes but then it goes back.
I bought my bike with less than 1,300 miles on it. I believe the original owner had the bike get its first 500 miles check but I don’t know what all that entails. Should I change the engine oil, brakes and flush the coolant? Very informative by the way.
Oil is easy, so I’d do the oil change minimum. Unless there is a service record.
Brake fluid flush… depends on how old your rebel is.
Coolant is early.
@@SLIGHT_ ok, I'll in my papers if the original owner included service docs for the bike. Thanks again.
Hey SLIGHT_, I'm having some issues finding the part # for the copper washers. I tried looking in the description as well as throughout the video but I can't seem to find it. Would you mind sending me the part # for the copper washers? Also, I'm not sure what type of coolant I should use. I tried finding the one in your video but it seems it's only available in Canada. What would you recommend? Thank you so much for all your Honda Rebel Maintenance videos!
My mistake I must have missed that.
90463-ML7-000 (you’ll need 2)
Coolant… any long life ethylene glycol based 50/50 mix.
I appreciate the feedback! Thank you!
Hey man!
Do you know the size of the copper washers?
Couldn't find original.
Thanks!
Part number: 90463-ML7-000
Where did you put water to clean?
In the radiator or in the reservoir
Sorry it wasn’t more clear. Yo flush the system I used the Radiator.
How often do you think I should change my Honda rebel 500 coolant? I’ve had my rebel for about a year and I racked up 7k miles so far.
I do it part of the 16,000mile service.
@@SLIGHT_ Alright thanks for the quick response slight, I appreciate it.
Hi, I'm adding coolant to my 500 for the first time (but not draining). Do I add coolant through the radiator cap or straight into the reserve tank?
Why are you adding coolant? Is the reservoir empty or low?
Topping up can be done through the reserve/reservoir if it’s empty you may have air in the system.
@@SLIGHT_ The reservoir is just low is all. So I’m just wondering where to add it
@@797.A ah ok, the overflow/res.
@@SLIGHT_ Ok awesome, thank you. I’m also going to check the coolant level in the radiator cap as well. If that one is low too, what should the procedure be?
hey man! what is the tool size to remove foot rest? thanks!
That uses an H8 (8mm hex)
@@SLIGHT_ cheers!
how much fluid did you in? (sorry if i missed it)
It’s a small system. It’s not even half of that jug. Not sure the exact spec. I will post if I can find it.
Didn't You have to bleed the Reservoir separately?
Reservoir collects the overflow and adjustments based on temperature. It’s part of the system itself.
So to answer your question… no you only need to fill up the reservoir.
Is there a way to do it without removing the shift lever?
Yes, you can crack the lower fastener. Yet coolant will get everywhere. As it’s only a few bolts it is easy enough to remove the LF assembly. Yet to answer your question, yes it is possible.
@@SLIGHT_ Could I potentially cover up the shift lever parts or will other parts be affected? Plus, what do you mean by a lower fastener?
@@justincaldera9750 lower fastener (lower coolant drain bolt) sorry… technical term for what is commonly referred to as “bolt” or “drain”
If you cover the shifter up, I’m sure that will work. Just note: when draining it will pour out. If you get creative you can use tinfoil or plastic to direct it down.
Hope that helps
Another really useful video Slight_. I wanted to ask your opinion on a different Rebel 500 matter, but it doesn't really fit for this video. Can I reach out to you via email please?
Sure. Message me on instagram or Facebook and I’ll send you the email.
Wait I did everything but my reservoir at the bottom stayed full
Correct, to remove the radiator reserve tank, you’ll need to remove the tank under tray, air cleaner housing and swing arm. In most cases you can use a long hose and a vacuum pump to remove this left over fluid.
@@SLIGHT_do I have to do that or is the regular flush ok?
@@SR_PRODUCTIONS personally I suck them out on the second time… yet I have the tools for this. You’ll be fine without draining that.
