What is the worst airport layover experience you have ever had? What mistakes have to made?

Domestically, LAX. LAX gave NO consideration to moving airside people expeditiously between terminals. Thus, it can be a very long slog through pipe tunnels to get to ones gate. Internationally: SGN. Ho Chi Minh Airport. There has to be intentional foot-dragging by airport Immigration and Departure personnel to make this place the worst. Example? Arrived at 05:35 for an 08:55 flight to Singapore. Thought I'd breakfast in a lounge before the flight. Finally got through security at 08:05! Later found out the airport SELLS a pass to expedite the process for roughly $30 USD ... and Vietnam can't figure out why people who come to visit never return. Just one scam after another.

I try hard to avoid immigration/customs at a layover airport.
When you land in the US from an international flight(EWR), that will be the airport you go through immigration/customs (except from Canada). Go through immigration, get your luggage, go through customs, and re-enter the terminal security line for connecting domestic flight. Give yourself 2 hours+. I try to make my US entry to my home airport and transit internationally to avoid this.

My layovers are normally 4 hours. I like to make sure I have plenty of time. I experienced having to go through security again to get my connecting flight for the first time when in The Netherlands going to Italy. I was stopped while trying to figure out where my gate was and searched. The gentlemen then explained to me about having to go through security to get to the gate. I also first thing, like to find my gate and stay near the gate. And I also only take carry-on

Remember that departure time is when the plane starts its pushback from the tarmac . As mentioned loading starts about an hour before pushback . Play it safe and get to your gate an hour a fifteen minutes early .Take the stress away and chill at the gate . Charge you devices, make one last bathroom call, stand up and stretch, catch up on your messages. Remember that one is going to be restocked a lot more in the plane.

Great tips! I actually enjoy layovers. It's interesting to see new and different airports. If my husband and I are not traveling business class, we are totally willing to pay for a lounge day pass. We computed the price of our last lounge with the great food and drink it was a much better deal. Each day pass was $59, but a beer at a restaurant near our gate was $23. No brainer...

You are totally right! Lounges are a great value if you can swing it.

It is true, the Jewel at Changi Airport Singapore isn't open 24/7. The world-famous indoor waterfall is shut off at 9.30pm and resumes at 11am each day. All the shops shut at 10pm and reopen at 10am each day. I discovered this the hard way.

On a recent trip from Belgium to Vietnam, we changed flights at Dubai. As there were a few hours involved, we booked a lounge on the way out. It was very disappointing and we didn't bother on the way back. Although it was the middle of the night, there was more than enough open for us to buy food and plenty of places to sit. I suspect that airline lounges are the best.

One time I had a 3 hour layover and walked to my gate before I went into a lounge. While I was in the lounge I went to the gate only to find they changed my gate a long distance away and had to hustle to get there.

That has for sure happened to us as well! Great excuse for a little workout running to the next gate. Thanks for watching.❤️

I actually missed a flight on a layover . When I arrived I checked the schedule board for my next flight. About 40 minutes later the departure gate was changed and I didn't catch that. We had a layover in Helsinki where we arrived at gate 1 and our departure gate was completely over by the opposite side. It took 30 minutes to walk to our departing gate. We had enough time to walk to our new gate. So for sure make your turns at the minimum 2 hours and preferably more. What's an extra hour mean when your travel day from getting out of bed to your destination hotel is say 14 hours ?

Also be aware that some large airports, like LAX, have no Lounges accessible to Priority Pass members. If one isn't an American Express Platinum, American Flagship, Delta SkyClub, or buys access to a lounge, it's going to be a miserable experience - especially if one's moving between domestic and international or vice versa.

Very true! I wish the US had a few better options for Priority Pass Lounges at major airports! Thanks for watching ❤️
