Well the reason I work with CM is because it is more precise than inches but if you work in inches, you can still take the measurements in cm then flip over your tape for the equivalent in inches

you can start with synthetic leather, when you get really good you can proceed to real leathers, animal skin and so on

Most professional/industrial sewing machines cost a pretty penny. Alot of beginners use the manual butterfly then progress unto the cylinder arm industrial sewing machine.
