Relive great moments from the history of Magic event coverage. For more clips, check out Brian David-Marshall's column on DailyMTG.com: www.wizards.com...
The math required in the Tinker mirror was insane; these two guys also knew each other's game like no one else, having been long time friends and team members. The whole match, but especially this game, were top notch.
mtg opened Yes when ESPN 2 was struggling for content in the 90's it was a staple of coverage on the network. Eventually ESPN started getting college sports on ESPN 2 which eventually forced Wizards to invest in their own set of cameras, etc. for coverage.
If Maher put Finkel down to 1 then he would not be able to pay for processor and that basically shuts him out of the game, playing necropolis post combat will protect from colossus too. Finkel is just so good to have seen this misplay.
@@patmacrotch5611 He paid 19 life and then chose to make life mostly irrelevant, the reactors saw that as a strong play, but his opponent (and the comments above) recognized that he did not need to play that artifact when he did and it may have been stronger to hit his opponent for 19 life.
Well that’s what happens when you’re playing a set that contains only four cards that are worth $40-$100 and then when the set gets shipped it out the $40 to 100 cards are now $.25 each. That’s why you have to use those cards quickly become pro or end your miserable career
for those of you who are wondering about the play of all these cards without sleeves... the DCI had a rule where in all high level magic tournaments the top 8 would be played without sleeves to prevent cheating. I think replacement cards were on hand to make sure cards were without nicks and scratches and such.
Bob Maher played Crumbling Sanctuary, which turns all damage into milling instead. But he played it BEFORE attacking...if he waited and attacked for 19 *first*, Finkel would have been at 1 life and couldn't pay any life to make blockers with his Phyrexian Colossus. Instead, Finkel got milled for 19, made blockers with Sanctuary, and eventually won.
I guess the play being referred to in the column is Maher playing the Sanctuary pre-combat, allowing Finkel to let the token through unblocked and still have life to play for his own Processor?
Two players pay 19 life, but what made Bob concede was milling his Stroke of Genius, that would mill Finkel thanks to Crumbling Sanctuary previous work. This was a mill mirror match disguised as a control match with big bois. LONG LIVE THE MILL.
because colossus is a one of, and the main kill from each deck was to make tokens. if your opponent got bigger token than you, you essentially couldnt win.
It's actually more painful that kids these days will never get the feeling of playing sleeveless cards, competing in magic on your allowance, and not giving a crap about card value.
2 reasons: 1) glare means that the old cameras could not see the cards 2) sleeves were badly produced back then, so they were often miscut, WotC could see this as a form of marking cards, so sleeves were banned in tournaments.
I love how this was on ESPN2

They need to put MTG back on ESPN
mtg was of espn?

thanks
YOU
***** You are absolutely correct. I will say that they do need to put it back on TV, I dont care what channel its on, I would watch.
Love Finkel's reaction to the Sanctuary play. he was the only who realized that it was bad.
It was also necessary, otherwise Maher would just lose to the colossus :/
Tijmen Blankevoort but you play the necropolis after attacking so finkel could not play his processor.

Yea, the crowd and commentator reactors threw me. Was Maher just planning on trying to mill him and not 0 life him?

omg no sleeves on those grim monoliths :(
Di Lella Matias and rishadan port
stfu no one cares. its fucking cards you stupid millennial kid.
@@The.Original.Potatocakes small slips of paper backed by more money then most currencies, I'd call them investments

Riffle shuffling too
This is one of my favorite matches of all time.
Finkel's face after the pre-combat sanctuary is priceless haha

You should be att the pro tour
Yes he does, and he's still winning.
Sleeves weren't manufactured consistently back then, so they varied in size. This would "mark" certain cards in your deck, so tournaments banned them.
And they had problems with ligths ad well
Hello Dark Confidant.
Most famous punt in mtg history
Finkel is just an awesome player.
John even gave him the wtf face
That was brillant👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Maher is the Dark Confidant ?
Leonardo Campagnolo you mean Bob?
This Game Was Shadowmage Infiltrator VS Dark Confidant
sleeves are younger than mtg. Sleeves first came out 1995 I believe
Damn on ESPN??? Thats sick
This was on espn?
LOL!! They clap so hard for the punt 😞.
did it skip ahead? How did finkle tap his creature to make a token, when he just played the creature last turn.
I guess the play being referred to in the column is Maher playing the Sanctuary pre-combat, allowing Finkel to let the token through unblocked and still have life to play for his own Processor?
kcostell Exactly.
yes it was a horrendous misplay
Noooo....sleeves it hurts
Right there with you. Wouldn't be able to play any card game w/o sleeves, but Yugioh was my first so sleeves were a staple by then.
They took their sleeves off their decks because cameras back then would get a glare from them
xCJBx UbeRNinjA they also just weren’t allowed at old tournaments because of marking

Man, back when magic was on espn2
No sleeves on those metalworkers
Yup, he designed it when he won the Magic Invitational.
He clearly recognized Maher's mistake.
This was on ESPN2?
ESPN2 used to be like what ESPN8 is now.
exactly, which is why my comment says what it does. mtg = 1993, sleeves =1995. Ergo, sleeves are younger than mtg.
What ever happened to John Finkel, is he still playing magic?
shadowcatX2000 Still is.
Why would he pay 19? Paying 10 is still a 2 turn clock, it still blocks a Colossus, and you don't die to a Colossus.
because colossus is a one of, and the main kill from each deck was to make tokens. if your opponent got bigger token than you, you essentially couldnt win.
Was he not trying to mill him?
There would be nothing stopping Finkel for paying 11 for his own and just making bigger tokens.
NOOOOO SLEEEEEEEVEEEEESSSS
Dont know why it recommended me this but it hurts to see all these cards being played without sleeves....
It's actually more painful that kids these days will never get the feeling of playing sleeveless cards, competing in magic on your allowance, and not giving a crap about card value.
because Finkel could play his own Processor and pay 11. If you pay 19, your opponent can't go higher and beat your creature.
Which happened.
Such a costly mistake at this level of play.
dude my heart aches watching all that money slowly deteriorating
plz explain me what the fucked happenede there..im mtg noob
My bad, I read that backwards. XP
MTG came out in 1993 ...

Sleeves. Sleeeeevves
lolurzasblock
Thats Finkel for ya
I cannot, for the life of me, tell these two dudes apart
They play without sleeves °__°
No sleeves... triggered....
So this is what happens when college students play mad at the Gathering
