It was fun to see the entire line. Way back in the 1970's, I used to ride the SP commuters between San Carlos and San Francisco. It was a great way to get to work because my office was within walking distance of the station when it was at Third and Townsend.
So many changes. As a native San Franciscan I'm familiar with much of the line from the Sp days. Back i 1988 I videotaped most of the San Jose to San Francisco run on a mid-day train. A railfan could film through the window of the front door back then, just like your footage. The line was basically unchanged from the old SP days. Bayshore Yard was still active. The Mission Bay wye was still there, and certainly there were more trackside customers. For about a year I had an apartment at Hayward Park. The old center siding was still in place in 1980. Tonight I played my video on my office television while matching your video on my computer monitor. I had to freeze frame or fast forward to keep pace as best I could. Lots of memories. Thank you.

One thing I hate about those horns is that they always use only one horn chime in Caltrain and not both of them on the p2. Metrolink has the same type of horn here in SoCal and they barely use one horn and use all both of them. Also it the air pressure low on those horns cuz I think the low pressure is causing the engineer to use only one horn?
@@d64tv06 The Gallery cars all seem to have issues with the high note (Number 3 bell) not sounding. The horns on these cab cars are mounted in an open box under the pilot above the rail. Unfortunately that might not be feasible since the CabCar runs northbound only. To film going south I could either film out the back of the train (CabCar); or I’d have to get access to the locomotive cab (highly unlikely).
Great video. I worked in San Jose in the mid 90s but never took the train. We drove everywhere. Next time we are back there I'll do the train trip. Is the whole line to be electrified?
Paul Warner Thank you ! Currently, Caltrain plans on electrifying the line from San Francisco to Tamien (just south of San Jose), while keeping regular diesel locomotives in service south to Gilroy. Signs of the electrification have already begun with catenary pole installations happening recently.
@@BrentNguyen46 you probably might know this but caltrain is starting to get their EMUS, i saw one at the maintenance facility while riding capitol corridor
Ryan Udasco Typically railroads will have a device called a “derail” attached to the track as a measure to protect the track against any trains moving on that particular track; whether it be for other trains, maintenance personnel, or a dead end track, etc. The sign signifies its location and alerts train crews of the derail and if it may be engaged.
The “DERAIL” sign is there to signify the presence of the derail device immediately adjacent to the sign, on the track (the yellow object). This device is usually engaged to the top of the rail if a train or any rolling stock is left stationary and to prevent it from rolling past the ‘Derail’ and fouling another track. In this video though, the ‘Derail’ was not engaged (device was clear of the rail to allow for train movement).
Transit Routes Not exactly. The train you are referring to is Caltrain #227 with a scheduled departure of 7:06am. The train I rode on was Caltrain #221, departing at 6:28am out of Gilroy.
Dam, I want to film this for myself but I live in San Francisco so I would have to get on the bus at 1am to arrive at gilroy at 6:20am, hopefully not miss the 6:28 and pray that either the 6:28 or the 7:06 are not bombadier cars.
Transit Routes Yeah. When I filmed this I had to leave Sacramento rather early too just to get here in time. If I am correct, typically Caltrain #217 is a Bombardier set and the other two sets are Gallery cars (#221 & #227). Otherwise, #227 could also be a Bombardier set, but #221 is almost always a Gallery set since it is a 'Limited' train and not a 'Baby Bullet' train.
Why do I feel like I'm now a certified train conductor? I'm applying to Amtrak, BNSF and Union Pacific. Under credentials: watched a two hour RUclips video.
James Howitt All Caltrain maintenance and Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) are dispatched from the ‘Caltrain Centralized Equipment Maintenance and Operations Facility’, otherwise known as CEMOF. It is located in San Jose just north of the San Jose Diridon station.
San Francisco to CP Lick just south of Tamien Station is dispatched by Caltrain San Jose Control. CP Lick to Gilroy is dispatched by Union Pacific Railroad Dispatcher 58 in Omaha.
Yes. Unfortunately though, the Capitol Corridor and Altamont Commuter Express trains currently do not have a publicly accessible window directly out the front of the CabCar to film from like Caltrain’s Gallery Cars. It is currently unfeasible unless granted permission to film from the crew area. I would’ve definitely jumped at the possibility if it were possible for sure though.
Thanks for showing the entire video of the line from Gilroy to San Francisco. Very nice train ride. However I feel that there are too many stations the train stops at on the way. It stops for two minutes to five minutes at each station which could have been edited. from the video.
Anmol Mehta Glad you enjoyed the video ! Yes, the train does stop at a significant number of stations, mainly since it is a “Limited” train. From my experience, I’ve had mixed suggestions regarding trimming excess footage versus inclusion of the entire length of the trip; although more individuals have suggested keeping the full footage for added realism and an approximately real life experience. I usually just go off viewer suggestions as each subsequent video is uploaded.
A few years back Caltrain purchased the Bi-Level cars from Metrolink to accommodate the substantial increase in ridership and to alleviate overcrowding on their trains. Caltrain to date has yet to repaint the cars to their livery and still retain the Metrolink paint scheme.
Amtrak's biggest fan That might be logistically tricky since access to the Amtrak CabCar window is prohibited from passengers in comparison to the Caltrain CabCar. If the opportunity arises, I’ll definitely look into it, but it’s not looking too likely to happen when riding on Amtrak.
@@BrentNguyen46 the cool thing is yesterday I got the caltrain dlc from train sim world 2020 and it's the exact same route and everything. Also we're you the conductor of this train?
Nice ! I also have the Caltrain Train Sim World 2020. One of the best and realistic train sims I’ve had for sure in my opinion. And no, I am not a conductor for Caltrain; although it would be nice to be one ! Haha.
Ryan Lad5 Caltrain has been experiencing record ridership in the last couple of years. In 2015, Caltrain purchased retired Metrolink cars to aid in the growth of ridership.
Original Name Please note that although Caltrain does operate through Morgan Hill, it however only operates during peak commuter rush hours and not in the later part of the night. The only other trains would be Amtrak's Coast Starlight or a Union Pacific freight train.
Noah Alonzo This train is running as Caltrain #221, a ‘Limited’ train which does not stop at all stations in order to accommodate specific ridership patterns and improve efficiency. Limited trains only run during rush hours to minimize station stops, but not to the extent to that of Baby Bullet trains; hence the reason why the train’s schedule skips the Palo Alto station.
If all trains stopped at Millbrae and Palo Alto under the current scheduling pattern there would be severe bottlenecking and delays because of train congestion. Baby Bullet Express trains with higher priority are following right behind these specific trains and it would not be logistically feasible. If that is not complicated enough all trains stopping at Millbrae and Palo Alto have 2 to 3 minutes of padding built into the schedule so late trains can make up time.

I prefer the video not be cut. It’s a video, you can skip ahead
Why are the metrolink cars say caltrain
A few years back Caltrain purchased the Bi-Level cars from Metrolink to accommodate the substantial increase in ridership and to alleviate overcrowding on their trains. Caltrain to date has yet to repaint the cars to their livery and still retain the Metrolink paint scheme.
1:20:15 I took a lot of videos of this railroad crossing when I was doing outdoor dining.
BEST CAB RIDE VIDEO EVER:)
Thanks !
Your Welcome:)
Could you do the Amtrak plz
Amtrak's biggest fan That might be logistically tricky since access to the Amtrak CabCar window is prohibited from passengers in comparison to the Caltrain CabCar. If the opportunity arises, I’ll definitely look into it, but it’s not looking too likely to happen when riding on Amtrak.
If you ride The Pacific Surfliner, You can ride it from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo and make a video of it.
okay but I live in San Diego

Was this taken in the cab car or the locomotive itself
This was taken from the CabCar end from the vestibule window.
@@BrentNguyen46 thanks just wondering cause that was cool
No problem. Glad you enjoyed the video !
Haha.
52:40 F40PH with metrolink cars
Ryan Lad5 Caltrain has been experiencing record ridership in the last couple of years. In 2015, Caltrain purchased retired Metrolink cars to aid in the growth of ridership.

2nd Post: Sure it stops a lot, that is how trains make money :)
53:08 did anyone else notice the Metrolink decals on the cars
going electric very soon from San Jose to SF.
Apparently engineer didn’t know crossing sequence lol
excelente saludos desde chile
Why this train is so slow ? 2h30 for 127 km ?
Papineau Charles There are stops, the cars are double decks, 79MPH limit. Sorry we arnt China.
If the trains got to speed immediately, and they didn't stop, they could make it in just under a hour.
I live in Morgan Hill so it was nice to see the whole town through the view of the train that annoys me as i try to sleep at night
Original Name Please note that although Caltrain does operate through Morgan Hill, it however only operates during peak commuter rush hours and not in the later part of the night. The only other trains would be Amtrak's Coast Starlight or a Union Pacific freight train.
as much as i love good train horn but that sounds sick sounds (like a deer being killed .) I can see why many towns have no trains horns zones

They always do that lol
Y did this train skip Palo Alto?
Noah Alonzo This train is running as Caltrain #221, a ‘Limited’ train which does not stop at all stations in order to accommodate specific ridership patterns and improve efficiency. Limited trains only run during rush hours to minimize station stops, but not to the extent to that of Baby Bullet trains; hence the reason why the train’s schedule skips the Palo Alto station.
BrentNguyen46 same for millbrae. Millbrae is an important station, so it's weird that some trains don't stop there
If all trains stopped at Millbrae and Palo Alto under the current scheduling pattern there would be severe bottlenecking and delays because of train congestion. Baby Bullet Express trains with higher priority are following right behind these specific trains and it would not be logistically feasible. If that is not complicated enough all trains stopping at Millbrae and Palo Alto have 2 to 3 minutes of padding built into the schedule so late trains can make up time.
2:24:00 Caltrain 323 overtakes 221
This route is in Train Simulator 2018
