The reason the ruble is lower today is because Russia has stopped purchasing foreign currency until the end of the year. As a result of this action there are no activity to obtain accurate exchange rates, the ruble exchange rate is whatever Russia says it is. There’s several reason’s for the crash related to sanctions and leg international payments and supplies.

I agree Ukrainians are fighting for freedom and it;'s worth fighting for, but the idea the Pilgrim Fathers went to America to escape religious persecution is an American myth as there was relatively little religious intolerance in England at that time and a wide range of faiths arose after the English Civil War and coexisted (EG Anglicans, quakers, catholics, levellers, diggers, presbyterians, baptists, etc). The pilgrim fathers who went to the USA were a fundamentalist sect who disapproved of this tolerance of other religions and saw only theirs as the correct one and wanted to begin a new colony where only their religion would be followed and all others expunged. Not the freedom loving pioneers Americans like to think of them as, as part of their own cultural mythology.
two hours of power tonight. lots of battery back up and downloads on the puter... 4 hrs of audiobooks with a torch. early to bed early to rise and dodge the drones and missiles.
Okay, you're not in a quantitative field. If you take the low end of the Economist's estimate - 60,000 Ukrainian dead - and use the normal 3:1 ratio of wounded to killed, that's 240,000 Ukrainians off the battlefield so far, or about a third the Russian losses. The high end estimate of Ukrainian losses means about 100,000 deaths and 400,000 off the battlefield. That would mean, frankly, that Russia ultimately wins. However, the low estimate of Ukrainian casualties is more consistent with the situations in the war so far where we actually know casualty ratios, such as the initial invasion and key battles such as Bakhmut.
Actually, the pilgrims were escaping religious liberty to a place where they could have the theocratic repression that was rejected by the populace in England.............But, it is good to be thankful, no matter the excuse.
"The Pilgrims believed in freedom of conscience, freedom of religion, and moral equality. They didn't try to convert outsiders to their faith, and they allowed people to practice their own religions." "The Pilgrims allowed men who weren't part of their faith to hold public office." "The Pilgrims' approach to religion was guided by Reformation concepts. The Mayflower Compact, which they established, helped to introduce the principles of religious freedom to America." Found on the Internet, a tool to correct the misinformed.

Ukraine being in a defensive posture is rational given their manpower problems. The defenders will almost always suffer fewer casualties than the attackers. Take a look at Allied Casualties in WWII and compare them to Axis casualties. Civilians took a huge pounding in WWII.
Thanks for the explanation of Thanksgiving Day, Prof. I’ve always wondered about that, but didn’t really have anyone to ask. Our holidays have been commercialized to such an extent that when someone draws my attention back to their fundamental significance, it is like a breath of fresh air. Thank you from a Canadian snowbird in Arizona!
Ruslan Leviev, of Conflict Intelligence Team, currently based in New York, had a stream today. He said that they've stopped including wounded in their in-house casualty estimations, stating that the quality of data is faulty, due to the Russian practice of recycling the same people, which results in the same person being counted over and over and then possibly dying, thus creating several data points where only one is expected by an outside observer.
My guess is that you compare dead and any injured Ukrainian with dead and severly injured Russian. Or do you not believe in the 3:1 ratio between attacking and defending. Russia has been attacking most of the time and with meat wave tactics. The low ratio you calculate simply can not be right.
Russian medical treatment for its wounded is abysmal with many dying who could have been saved. Ukrainians make every effort to medevac their wounded out and they receive far superior treatment allowing a large portion of them to return to the fight.
I don't think the ratio of Russian vs Ukrainian casualties is correct. Ukraine is mostly in a defensive position, favoring it to have less casualties. Based on conflicts with similar profiles and omitting drone warfare, the casualty ratio between attacker and defender is between 1.5:1 and 3:1 (source via chatGPT analyzing various conflicts WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam). Taking the numbers quoted in the video and forming an average, the ratio might be closer to 2:1.
When comparing the Russian and Ukranian numbers its always difficult to go "like for like" - because Ukraine is publishing a "lost" number for Russians - this is not killed and a little bit wounded, this is killed and so seriously injured they are leaving Ukraine permanently. The number for Ukrainian dead in the Economist is entirely consistent with other reliable estimates that I've seen where after some costly early battles in 2022 deaths have usually been estimated in 50-100 per day range. As for wounded - there were articles on the numbers receiving or waiting for EU-funded prosthetics earlier in the year, not sure whether that was a UK or German news source reporting, but that was then about 50,000. I also remember that a considerable number of these men - with life changing injuries - were reporting back to service to do non-combat roles.
every day its takes another ruble to buy an American dollar. If this keeps up for just a few months ANYTHING Russia imports from consumer purchases to military parts and equipment will cost double. The reason the banks have not intervene to stop the ruble crashing is because they would have to get it from reserves. The reserves are down to a critical level. Russia can bumble their way through 2025 but after that it will be day by day.
Hi Professor and Happy Thanksgiving to you and all Americans who continue to stand strong with Ukraine. Your analysis is very interesting but the hard data misses a very important factor - namely, the proportion of lethal vs non-lethal casualties for the two sides. I recall reading a report in (I think) 2023 that compared statistics for the two sides, which suggested a ratio of killed to injured for Ukrainian forces that was roughly in line with your own figure of around 4:1 of injuries to mortalities. But the equivalent figure for Russian armed forces was much closer to 1:2 killed to wounded. Anyone who has followed the war closely may recall the stories that emerged from as early as 2022 (according to Russian voices) of the paucity of provision of even basic medical equipment and services, and the uncaring nature of Russian commanders that simply leave injured troops under their command to die on the battlefield. By comparison Ukraine has made serious efforts to preserve the lives of its personnel - much is made of the growing capabilities of the Ukrainian defence industry but they are probably now world leaders in other areas such as battlefield treatment of injuries, rehabilitation and prosthetics too. This is not to downplay the seriousness of the losses to the AFU, but the value they accord to the lives of their warriors means that many of the injured are successfully treated and often return to the battlefield or go on to support the war effort in other ways, while Russian combatants only future is as fertiliser for Ukrainian fields.
Looking at deaths is more likely a good indicator, especially since Ukrainian wounded often live to fight another day. Also, those 400k wounded include civilians with minor wounds if I am not mistaken.
To me it's pretty obvious that the population disparity between the two countries show that Ukraine simply doesn't have the manpower to win this da-m war. No amount of western hardware will change this fact. Sure, they can make it very costly for R., but actually win. Very questionable (unfortunately).
My understanding is rubble effectively delinked and controlled by Lubiana, so devaluing effectively increases the value of the metro dollars from the west funding the SMO -allowing them to continue for a bit longer ??? Slava Ukraini

Hi Professor Gerdes. What do you think will happend when the Rubel is traded again Do you think Putin will survive further hyper inflation and increasing interest rates? Will the Russian people put up with that or will they revolt against him?
Hi Prof. Happy Thanksgiving! I was wondering if you have some information about the state and the care of the wounded between Ukrainian and Russian wounded soldiers. I have heard that in general Ukrainian soldiers are less injured because of Western armor and they get better medical treatment. Not sure if that is true, but that would skew “off the battlefield” a bit more in Ukraine’s favor. Wonder what your thoughts are. Thanks a bunch, Rick
That´s right, unhappily the Russian economy is not going to collapse, specially if they can exploit the immensely rich on rare minerals Donbass. Russia is only going to collapse if it ´s going to lose the war.
What matters is how many graves are acceptable before either side caves in and of course how many turn 18 every month. Math is on Russian side by far and NK could help a lot with massive population.
Have you seen stocks that have halted trading because the move down was so big? Sometimes people calm down and the selling stops or slows down. This is what they are trying to do with the Rubel. Plus desperately looking for a way around the new sanctions. Most of the time though it keeps crashing once trading restarts and trading is stopped again.
If for every 3 Russian casualties there are 2 Ukrainian, and Ukrainians already deeply hate Russians, what happens if the West allows Ukraine to suffer too long? If Russia wins or the war freezes on their terms, how will 30-40 million people, who lost loved ones and feel betrayed by the West, respond? Will they stay and wait for the next attack, or will they leave-and if so, where?
That is only if there is a balance in other force factors , which is not the case . Air superiority (glide bombs) and numerical missiles superiority (hypersonic Khinzal and Iskander mainly) play in Russia's favour and twist that ratio .
He said, more than once, that it is a high estimate. 100k deaths to 400k wounded is in and of itself way out of proportion. 1:3 refers to the ratio for an attack on prepared position and is kind of always wrong, it's a rule of thumb and does not say anything about casualties.
