Thanks for this whole tutorial Dean. Really appreciate it. After speaking with 2 different Volvo dealers, it's been announced through a Bulletin that the spring be removed on the DP-E drive. I'm not sure about the other drives as I didn't get into detail on those. I would assume so. But the dealer said that the bulletin called for the Cone spring, washer and retaining clip be removed. Excellent tutorial. Wish you kept going on shimming the intermediate to upper housing. But none-the-less, first class tutorial.
Super Informative and Clear vids on the upper. Can’t Thank You enough, I am a first time subscriber ,because of your channel. I bought your steel keeper /bushing. Wisdom right there. I been mostly an observer / learner. so I’m gonna do my upper soon. But would like some info on changing out the forward/ rev gear bearings, if possible . I’ve seen your vids several times , thanks again, Mike
Mike, those F&R bearings are not easy to change. Be sure to flush and clean them real good first. They're extremely tough bearings and many times that's all they need, we rarely change them. Don't cut them off with a torch or plasma cutter. Heat can ruin the gear. You can die grind a slot and crack the race for removal....take your time. Best of Luck...Dean
Very informative probably the best I've seen. There isn't enough info on video for the older outdrives I wish you did a video on water inlet bushing replacement on a 270 PENTA . I can't find any info on it .
Best videos and information ever for penta rework. Do you have an picture on an bad cone and a new, can be a good information too see the different. Best regards Mattias.
I just subscribed. Im going to be running a 280 on my boat build and your a god send for these bullet prrof but aging drives . I want to go through mine before i finish the boat. But i did have a question. Im learning there are different ratios on some of these ?? How can i know what ratio i have and what would be best for my application?
Hi, That's not an easy question. It depends on engine size, boat size, DP or SP.. Basic Rule SP: 2:15 4-cyl engine 1:89 6-cyl or small 8-cyl 1:61 High power gas or diesel DP is much more complicated
@TheAyrCaveShop thanks for the reply. The engine I plan to run is a mild 350 . It's for a 22ft cruiser /weekender. Nothing extream I just need to get off the trailer and around the lake . Not pulling skiers or hotrodding around . And it's a single prop. I do have one that's bolted to a transom that has a Volvo penta 350 already bolted to it so I'm guessing just stay with that right?
Rick, watch part-2 that kind of covers it, I didn't replace the u joints, but once the yoke is out it's typical u-joint replacement process. Technically you need to replace the crush sleeve also. Or re-expand it like I did. They didn't make it easy. ATB...Dean
Hi Dean just wanted to let you know I really enjoy your videos on the Volvo drives. You have helped me in the past with your in-depth videos which helped me solve problems after I purchased my boat. I have another problem I am hoping you can help me with. I was out in the water travelling at 3500 rpm when all of a sudden the boat went out of gear and the engine was revving up. I brought throttle to idle right away at the same time shutting off the engine. Later we managed to go to shore travelling at only 1000 rpm as any more throttle would take it out of gear. Do you have any solution to help me with this problem Kind regards Chris
Chris, That could be a spun prop if its a single prop. The drive spline is mounted in rubber inside the prop, it's a common failure. Could be the cone clutch, but that's more common under heavy power coming up on plane.

interesting, removing the spring is a new one..
@@TheAyrCaveShop something about the spring not allowing it to fully engage with forward gear.

👍 Super interesting! Thank you for sharing with us! 👍
Great series!
A great video tutorial😀👍

That not an easy job on a freshwater unit, and a major PIA on a saltwater unit. I'll add it to the video making list.

Probably won't show well in a photo, I do have several bad ones.. I'll add to the list
Thanks...

@@TheDollAdvocate Yeah start with that.
If its a fuel injected 350 you could probably step up to a 1:61 if it isn't already.
I would like a video on changing the u-joint on my DP-b drive. Do I have to disassemble the upper gear drive to remove the u-joint?

That is certainly an involved repair. It must cost a lot to overhaul one of those gear boxes.
