Oh my god. I cannot believe this is Renée Flemming. This is phenomenal! This is such a big stretch for her, for someone like her. Opera singers have always seemed to me to have pretty much one way of singing, and singing this kind of music just didn't really work. But this, this is amazing. I'm not entirely sure about this arrangement (sounds like all synthesized strings, etc.), but it's interesting. I know that she used to sing jazz, and I'm sure that makes a huge difference in how she sings something like this. It may not be something your average opera star can do, even if they are fantastic opera singers. I apologize if I'm babbling, but this has just thrown me for a complete loop. Wow! I'm just floored. Completely floored. Fantastic, amazing, surprising! Ms. Flemming, you took a risk in breaking out of your star-making role with this one, and from what I can tell, you've hit it out of the park! Thank you for this. You've just earned a new fan. I've always been an admirer of your singing for some time now, even heard you in concert about 10 years ago, or so. Don't get me wrong. But I am just so blown away at your versatility. Fantastic! Congratulations!
Seems a little silly to compare the KD Lang version to Flemings. The voices, styles and interpretations are all so different. That's what makes them all so listenable. If all the same, would'nt that be REALLY boring. I think Flemings version is so controlled and Lyrical - her opera training I'm sure. Lang is so emotive and raw. All have their great points. Thank you Renee for showing such awesome range. Just listened to your rendition of Casta Diva - cannot believe it's the same voice.
This is a very interesting (good) version and sung with great soul much like the most popular versions. Was surprised she didn't sing it in the high range quite a juxtaposition from Jackies version where she sang it in a high range. Don't hate me I'm not comparing singers.
HonorMills1 Personally I think KD's rendition is awesome as well. As is LeAnn Rimes'. The latter , I have to admit, being my favorite of those three. And then there is of course the original.
a song written by a deep and wonderful soul and sung by a blessed and captivating heavenly voice
A truly beautiful song, beautifully sung by a beautiful artist - love it and her!
a blessed complicated love, adoration never lasts, but it was blessed
Every thing that she sing or touch became a jewel. !! :)

and here to settle the question of "who sung it best"...
Renee Fleming is top 3 in the world right now, although I don't really like this version.
static and boring.... really? go listen to kd lang
K.D. Lang sings Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

+HonorMills1 For me, it's Renee Fleming, or Leonard Cohen himself. Never cared for K.D. Lang.
