Make sure your home is not a target and install a security strike plate on all your exterior doors. With the additional strength intruders will move on to the next house after numerous failed attempts to kick in your door. These strike plates only take about 15 minutes to install and for the improved security it's a no-brainer for all homeowners.
Tools Needed
1. Straight edge (longer than 10 inches)
2. Pencil
3. Sharpie
4. Drill
5. Phillips head drill bit
6. 1/8 inch drill bit
7. Hammer
8. Chisel
9. Phillips head screwdriver
For anybody who is watching this in the future and can't get their bolt to latch with the door closed, make sure the lock and the door knob shafts are lined up on the door itself. Mine were not lined up, so I had to install my strike plate on an angle to account for this. I had my strike plate perfectly aligned with the holes, but it took me hours to figure out that it was actually my door that was screwed up.
Dealing with this fact right now. 🤬
Thank you for making this install clear, I was scratching my head on this one before I watched the video. You don't have too many chances to get this right before you have to install another jamb.
This is just what I needed. I have two strike plates that I could not get installed correctly but I think you have given me the answer! Thank you very much for this video.
No problem Alma. Best of luck with the project 👍
instaBlaster.
I hope you’re still active. I just got a house, and I have been watching your videos. Very helpful!
I liked the snow you put in the background.
Awesome work...great easy video 👍I know a lot of people have used all the great info in this video. Using the lines to line everything up is something I never heard of. Thanks for the video.
Great idea, however there is one security flaw with the door design. I would replace the deadbolt with one that opens with a key on the interior side, and place the key away from the side panel window when not at home. The bad guys know to break the glass, and reach in to open both the deadbolt and handle. Just a suggestion from 31 years of Law Enforcement.
Hey Keith, that is an awesome suggestion and I really appreciate your suggestion from all you have seen in your 31 years. 👍
Yessir no problem. I have seen other door designs with the sidelights on the hinge side of the door, but it does look awkward. Please keep up the great videos. Love your info and format you provide!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs our local Fire Department would disagree, as their stance is that that is a fire escape hazard if you do not have the keys to get out of the burning house.
That makes a lot of sense does the local fire department recommend an alternative which is safe and also helps protect your home?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I don't know but that's a great question!
Thank you. I am a single mom and we had to have our foundation repaired which greatly misaligned our deadbolt and now our door knob as well. It is not safe so i am going to get this set up and it looks like there is enough room in the opening on the plate so I can make the adjustments above and below which is our issue.
Using longer screws make it more secure because longer screws go deep into the studs (2”x4”) the door frame is very thin & delicate piece of wood making the door more breakable. If u just use the 3” screws no matter the strike plates. It’s just as secure.
Thank you for the great tutorial, I really appreciate it ! Also, your voice is very soothing and it takes out the fear of tackling a job like this. Happy holiday to you and yours.
I bought two of these today and this video is sure to help
I bought the same security latch plate and put on my walk in garage entrance door and I followed your excellent steps and it was easy to follow. The only complaint I have on this Defender Security latch plate is I noticed one of the supplied three inch screws were bend, or curved a bit, which I had to wonder about the strength of the screws. Luckily, I had some three inch galvanized three inch screws I had used on this same door two years ago on the existing old latch plates and I used three galvanized screws on this new latch plate which I think will add more security and strength than the supplied screws. I still give this latch plate a thumbs up 👍
As Always...Great Video.👌
Exactly what I need to do to all my doors.🙋♂️
I have a handle-set and two dead bolts. The extra dead-bolt is a purely mechanical push-button combination lock. I drew up a single strike-plate, which encompassed all the individual strike-plates and even added 3" above and below. I had a fab shop laser cut it for me. The material was 1/8" stainless steel and it had holes for maybe 12 screws. Way overkill, but secure as it gets. I actually mortised the strike-plate flush to the door frame.
Don't forget to install longer screws in your hinges too because they would be the new weak point.
To be clear, if you have a storm door with a decent lock, burglars will very likely avoid the front door. The guy in the video seemed to have one already.
Most residential doors in the US can be breeched by just throwing a hip into it. Not true with a typical out-swing storm door. They usually have to break the glass to breech a storm door. Most burglars will opt for the man-door on the garage because they're usually out of sight. Alternatively, daylight break-ins might occur at the glass patio door, where a drug addict will just throw a landscape brick through the glass.
My garage man-door has a 2x4 across it (barring the door). My glass patio door is hurricane glass and 10 tries with a brick won't get through it.
Also, don't forget to put a zip-tie on your emergency release on your overhead garage door, otherwise they can be opened with a coat hanger.
Thank-You for this excellent install vid. I bought the product and would have installed it wrong without this help.
👏 glad we could help!
Great job. Thanks for the info. If I could add one thing because I just installed this. If the door opening isn’t wide enough you have to recess it but using a wood chisel and chiseling out door frame.
Installed mine in today thanks
I keep looking at the junky doorjamb to the garage, it's cracked and poorly constructed. Things line up differently depending on the season. I don't consider that door any kind of security once 'they' get past the big garage door.
A strike plate like this is definitely in my future, and a smart lock. Having that door secure itself at night would be pretty cool.
Very well explained. Thanks
I was really hoping for instructions on flush mounting this but still a great video
Well done. Many thanks.
No Prob!
Thanks!
Greate Job. Short and sweet. Thank you!
I added a metal plate on an old door, not sure what it is called, but reduces ability to access (ie: carding a door open). Also, another channel was showing a device that installs on inside of door that helps keep door from being kicked in. * not sure, but it may also keep door shut, even if lock gets picked?
Stay safe ! If you have not already done so, Any helpfull ideas for window security as well, would be great.
Great pointbto.put this on..unfortunately if you wantva SECURE frontbdoor...loose thexsidelights..easy to break..easy to reach in and unlock door !
Don’t add comments while drunk.
What if the burglar comes *while* I'm installing this? I know the chances of that happening are really low, but they're not non-existent.
🤔
The hammer and chisel can also be used as weapons. You should always carry a hammer and chisel when you open your door to enter or exit as well. I can't believe he didn't mention this in the video!
@@oo7moses exactly 😉
You should have some tools in your hand or close by to defend yourself.
thats what the 2nd amendment is for
I know it’s not safe to have but you really need a double deadbolt, that way when someone smashes in your side light window they can’t just unlock your door and walk into your house 🏡! Without that it totally eliminates all the extra security your adding to your front door!!
But won't those big holes make the door wobble? Those old strikers were designed to be a perfect fit. That defiant striker has big rectanglar holes. The dead bolt will wiggle in there.
Many times the long screws that come with the strike plate aren't that good. If you use am electric driver for the long screws, don't go all the way.
HAND tighten the last inch.
Thanks man
You're welcome!
Useful!
I always laugh at bad guys whose home gets burgled because they did not secure their home. They should know better. Use 3" screws on the hinges too, for added security.
I have a weird question. So I bought one to install, no doubt there are hundreds of brands, most from china.
Here is my question. Should the feels as if I can bend them. I’m no gym rat, but wonder if this means it’s super cheap or if this is normal.
They will just smash the glass side window and reach in to unlock the dead bolt. Always use a double sided keyed deadbolt on doors with glass
I hear you but I would hate to have a situation where the door is locked and the family needs to get out fast 🔥 and we can't find the key. That scares me more than the break in potential.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs good point never thought of that
@@SeantheRD that’s why they aren’t allowed in a lot of places
@@EverydayHomeRepairs You can go out the back door or the window, or have the key nearby but too far for a burglar to reach in.
Mine is the same way, you can buy the 3M security film to prevent a quick smash and open. They could still get in, but not before they have a .30hate putting them down. It takes a while to actually get through that stuff if installed properly, they'd have to smash the glass and then use a knife to cut it all out. Security is all about providing more and more standoff, Larson and others sell storm doors with the same 3M film concept or gates that can prevent someone from simply walking up to the door and kicking it in.
Great project. Weak link are the little windows. Break them and reach around. Unlock the door.
For sure, I am actually either going to do the film or ODL Add On Blinds.
If 1/8 drill bit can't slide down what do you recommend? I can't at the bottom of my door.
Just break that small window next to the door reach in and unlock the door 👍🏾
Hello Scott why not put longer screws where you put the 3 short screws?
You can jus break tha glass reach in and unlock it
you don't need to flush mount the plate?
I wondered the same thing. He had the chisel there, mill it down and recess it.
Your deadbolt is not completely engaged the top of the latch knob should be at the 2 o’clock position when fully engaged
I bought the strike plate, but the door won’t close all the way. What am I doing wrong?
How does the security plate help if I just punch out/in the glass side portion and reach in with my hand to open the door?
Yeah, good point and that is a discussion I had with a few others. One thing we have never settled on is what a secure option would be for those who have sidelights. Any ideas are welcome. Thx!
Security glass film.
That glass next to the door is the real weakness , all a burglar needs to do is break the glass and open the door. Replace that glass with wood and now it'll be safe.
Yeah, there were a few other comments on the same point. One thing we never agreed on was a good solution. Do you have a recommendations for those with side lights? Thx!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs sorry I don't have any recommendations. I've always been scared to have that type of door way. Still a great video tho. I've done all that to my doors already too and look at all these videos for insight. Thank you for the video I'm sure this video has helped many people.
Appreciate the follow up and when I find a good solution I will pin a comment to the top for this video to make it more visible to others. Take care.
Take off that glass panel and change it to a solid wood. Can't see any other way.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs could also use 3M or other security film to add resilience to the glass and increase the delay of a determined burglar
They are gonna break the glass and reach for the lock inside ,
Yeah, chatted with a couple others that brought up that point. Agree but interested to here your thoughts on the best course of action to fix and/or alternatives?
If you have a bulletproof glass, then they can't do anything. It's the dead end for most burglar.
@@chamberlyvandora9594 thieves are not the only ones to watch out for because there are many bad people who can enter the house and do bad things, and remember glass is glass and glass breaks
my landlord just installed one of these but, it sticks too far out from the frame and makes closing the door impossible without slamming :-(
i don’t know how to fix it..
Yo Scott, I'm doing this exact thing on my front door but NEED to use 4 inch Spax screws, do the pilot holes need to run the entire length of the the screws cause I'd have to get a new bit for that, (using a 1/4 three inch bit currently)? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks for posting! ~Mark~
Not usually, 3"pilot hole should be plenty to avoid splitting.
Yo @@EverydayHomeRepairs, Hey Scott, just finally got done installing this exact Strike Plate, (nobody had these in stock before Xmas so I had to wait for over two month's to get one) and it went flawlessly! Thanks so much for posting, as I'm a first time home owner and need to do as much as possible on my own. ~Mark~
Doors with a side light windows is useless to install these
I am always curious to get your take on how to secure a door with a side light? It is a valid point but often I haven't heard a good option.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs I' ve search all option out there and ask some carpenter friends and there's no solution to that kind of door other then just an alarm system and a big dog looking at you from inside the house.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs security laminate over the glass
@@noahholt482 Yeah I was thinking of some type of film. Thanks!
I'm wondering what kind of weather strip that is and where can I get it?
All that work just to have a window 3” from the deadbolt lock
what do you do if you need to angle the plate slightly to allow the deadbolt to latch, but one of the holes is almost perfectly aligned with an existing hole for the deadbolt plate (but not quite)? i can't re-drill it in place because the new hole would overlap the old one. am i stuck filling it with a golf tee or something of that sort and re-drilling?
Except a burglar can just break the glass, reach in and unlock the door
#8 or #9 screws?
The security strike plate amzn.to/2J6lOH4 will come with all the screws needed but I think the screws included are #9 as those fit the best in hinges and strike plates.
Got to be some dumb robbers if they do not use the window next to the door. Use the monoblock ready to pick up too.
So, some jackwagon comes to kick your door in and can't do it. I wonder if he could just bust that side window?
That's all great but useless on ur door. All the bad guy needs to do is break the side glass and unlock the door.
Except for somebody could just break one of those small little windows by your front door and reach in to unlock it. Absolutely hate those little windows by front doors they make zero sense
LMFAO but he has little windows left of the door lock. A person could just break the window and unlock the door.
