The Turkmens like all other turkic folks are a blend made of iranians and mongolians and this can be seen in the most turkmen's facial features which are indeed mixed irano-mongolian facial features.
If you go there you should go on transit-visa! 4 or 5 days may enough to visit some main points of interests. Transit is (relatively) cheap, but you need a visa for entering the next country, for example you enter from Uzbekistan and exit into Iran. Transit means, you are not allowed to exit into the same country you have entered from! They won't issue transit-visas for this. So far I know, you won't get a transit-visa or a visa at all in month national celebratings take place. Crossing the country isn't necessarily expensive. Be aware to take single-one-Dollar bills with you. And do not enter the country direct from Europe. Better acclimatize yourself in advance to the sovjet/persian realities in central-asia, for example in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. You will get much further if you can avoid the culture-shock!!
