    WOW! I watched several different TOW/HITCH PACKAGE installs and you have the BEST Instructional video yet! Not many show the pre wired installation procedure. I have a 2015 Citadel and it came pre wired. Thank you for showing the correct hitch and all the hardware. There are several MOPAR hitches on the market and some do not have the seven pin/five pin mounting hole installed. Now I am ready to install my hitch!! THANK YOU!! This made my Friday COMPLETE! :-)

    Wow thanks for this! It has sorted out a lot of confusion. I had just finished inquiring with every Dodge dealership in Calgary, and without exaggeration every one of them misinformed me in one way or another.
    Depending on whom I spoke with, I'd apparently need to buy the entire wiring harness, no activation is required, the factory-installed hitch is a class IV but only a class III rated at 3000lb can be purchased aftermarket so I'm SOL, and the brake controller is not included in the wiring harness so I'd have to purchase and install one separately.
    After discovering and watching your video I checked my Durango R/T, and the harness was right where you said it would be. I'm also very relieved to hear that the standard Mopar OEM hitch is the required part for the full 7200 lb towing capacity. And I did finally find one dealership that was able to give me a price on activating the harness ($65 CAD).

      One guy I talked to in parts, insisted that without the factory tow package my D R/T would not have the required prep package (HD cooling etc.). He asked me for my VIN, and -- after taking the time to condescend to me like the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons for reading him the entire VIN instead of only the last 8 digits -- he pulled up my build sheet and insisted that the hitch receiver MUST be installed already, since all the other towing components are there. LOL!

    So I’ve just finished installing the hitch receiver and it was relatively simple thanks to your clear instructions.
    I’m just putting everything back together and I did have one question: How did you re-install the rivets for the fender trim in the wheel well? The kit comes with new rivets but none of the videos ever show anyone installing them, and I don’t have a rivet gun.

    • @simonblunden2151
      @simonblunden2151  6 лет назад

      shanksworthy I went and bought a plastic rivet gun from princess auto.Not sure if you are in Canada or not but any auto parts shop should sell them. This was mine

      I'm in Canada (Alberta) and we have a Princess auto. I'll try to find something like that. Thanks!
      BTW I was able to get everything back together with only the following minor issues:
      * Broke one or two tabs when pulling the fender off, although somehow that doesn't seem to make a difference as it still seats securely.
      * The bolts on each upper wheel well had nothing to screw into. On closer inspection, I found 2 threaded plastic pieces on the ground on either side which looked like they'd broken off. So I just held them behind and screwed the bolts into them anyway. Doesn't seem to make a difference.
      * After putting everything back together, I pushed the button to close the rear hatch and got an "error" noise (3 quick beeps). Tried several times and it wouldn't close! After a failed attempt to google the cause of the problem, I finally gave up and manually closed hatch. But then just for fun I tried the button once more, and to my relief it opened. On the subsequent button-press it closed successfully, so it looks like it's all good now. Not sure what happened there, but it did initially cause some panic.

    Really good video! but why do you need the brake controller? I thought the wire hardness in the hitch works as a brake controller?

    • @simonblunden2151
      @simonblunden2151  6 лет назад +1

      Albert Tot thanks for watching. You still need the brake controller to control the brakes (if you have a trailer with electric brakes). With the tekonsha it applies the brakes in proportion to the Durango’s braking. I know some pick up trucks have a brake controller integrated but the Durango’s don’t.

    @Simon Blunden It's been a couple years since you posted this very helpful video. How has towing in the Durango R/T worked out for you?
    I've been towing a travel trailer with my R/T for a year now and it has gone very smoothly, even despite being on the edge of several weight limits when fully loaded up. In fact now that we've started including bikes & my son is getting heavier we're probably slightly exceeding the R/T's payload by a bit -- but I'm talking about the really conservative payload found on the door jamb sticker, which seems to be 1200 lbs on every Durango model regardless of what options it has. :-) We'll probably upgrade to a truck eventually, but there's no hurry.
    I guess the one problem we have run into, is that weird rear load-leveling suspension mechanism that comes standard on the R/T. It's been thoroughly unhelpful, as it seems to fight against the weight distribution hitch's ability to transfer adequate weight to the front axles. I've had to crank the WDH down with more pressure than recommended, to compensate for the fact that it will loosen up after a few kms when the self-leveling kicks in. I've had to become intimately familiar with how my WDH works because I can't rely on the dealership techs to understand the issue.

  • @TheHolmesTeam
    @TheHolmesTeam 6 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the video, Simon. I just bought a 2017 Durango R/T last week. I've been doing lots of research too (sounds like you did as well) about the different options for hitches (aftermarket - Curt, etc, underneath bumper) vs. factory OEM. It looks so much better with OEM and the bezel than a hitch underneath the bumper...but I'm concerned that all these OEM hitches from Mopar say 3500 lbs max - even the dealer direct says that. I, too, have the spec sheet and I have all the same tow options you mentioned included on mine, except for the hitch/connector just like yours. So, it sounds like you have the same... Do you still feel good about the hitch? No concerns re: weight capacity for you? My friend says I should get it done at an aftermarket place where they will weld it on, but I'm not seeing any welding from yours or other youtube videos I've seen...guess it's not necessary with the 4 bolts on each side? Thanks, Cheers, Greg from Surrey, BC

    • @simonblunden2151
      @simonblunden2151  6 лет назад

      Hi Greg, Thanks for watching and leaving comments. If you have an R/T and it's prewired like mine, you have the full size spare, and your spec sheet says you have all the items I do, you are good to tow 7500lbs. I am really happy with this. Just picked up our trailer this weekend and it tows like a dream. I'm not a mechanic and I'd say this was a 5/10 in terms of difficulty. No welding necessary. All you are doing is replacing the factory bumper with the OEM hitch receiver. I took mine to Langley Chrysler at the end to get them to program the wiring harness for $55 and voila - good to go. Message me if you have any questions. Personally I would not do an aftermarket as it will sit below your bumper and look ugly.
