Loved the series of interviews on the Canning Stock Route. Many moons ago I did an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic. I just love Pauls logic and detailed explanations, they just so sensible. Many mechanics know these sort of things. Well, perhaps I revise that, most good mechanics do. But I have never seen anyone explain it so well as Paul.

    Andrew ? , You should of got Paul to replace the Core / Welsh Plugs in the back of the Head and in the engine Block with Brass ones because they won't rust out and they are made out of thicker material, The ones fitted in the back of the cylinder head are almost impossible to change while the engine is in the truck so see what Paul says about changing them, In Australia when build a good reliable motor we always use to replacing them plug with Brass Ones, Ok, Hope that helps.

    Some great expedition spares philosophy here, although I'm struggling on the idea of plugging in the battery charger to a mythical mains socket in the wilds, so will stick to my twin alternator approach ( or take a payload hit with a spare / keep going with my idea for a 3.5kg Honda GX35 four stroke engine driving the spare alternator as APU. Overall, Paul on Toyotas is much on a par with the superb Britannia Restorations no nonsense LandRover channel on Yourube. Nice work Gents.

    • @simon762321

      i was also thinking this, but I suppose the point is you would only need to limp your vehicle to the any/next electricity point to recharge the battery. And then you could limp on again a bit further to the next safe point etc etc until you can get repairs.

      You cannot rely on either the availability of strong sun to drive solar panels in most countries or having mains power to charge the battery. The advice given in this video is generally excellent but I don't agree with their alternator philosophy.

    We all have different priorities which is fine provided one has thought them through.
    IMO a reconditioned alternator is fine because all the wearing parts are replaced and the other parts have a virtually unlimited life. However I do carry a spare because Sod's law says that if there's a failure there'll be no sun nor mains power available. I have had to change the alternator on a trip when there was a failure of the rectifier pack (can happen owing to various causes). Without the spare I would have been in big trouble.
    Regarding the 170A alternator, this is surely way too large for the rest of the system and will cause big problems if it puts out a very high current (it needs the correct controller to ensure this doesn't happen). However there's a worthwhile benefit in having an over-rated component; it should be more reliable than an item which is working near to capacity.

    • @philhealey449
      @philhealey449 4 года назад

      Yes , if you are thorough you can assess the power transmission ability of the belt drive, including belt velocity and pulley contact angles etc. If the safety margin is reduced or non existent , then rapid belt wear and slippage will occur. So a much uprated alternator may need an extra idler pulley or roller to increase contact angles and/or enlarge both drive and driven pulleys to keep the same pulley ratio, but achieve higher belt speed to achieve greater horsepower transmission ability.

One fault I had a hard time troubleshooting was worn bushes attaching the fan to the water pump pulley. I thought it was a loose timing chain and I had some other untrained ears listen, but no answer. A trained mechanic would probably have stared groping for loose elements.

    Ever thought about filling the cooling system with waterless coolant - as the engine stands up to both hot and cold extreme temperatures much better? Also removes the corrosive element 'water' from the system, so stopping corrosion of water pumps, engine block and radiator, it is more expensive but I think well worth it in the long run.

      220v I assume with a battery charger from a power point.

      Yep, mains charger. But, if 170AH from the alternator won't charge the battery(s) in good time, what hope does a 220V 7AH charger have? If you go to a 50AH mains charger you are paying big money and carrying lots of weight for no good reason, and still only have less than 1/3 the capacity. Dumb idea IMO. Even using 170AH alternator is overkill - your on-board DC-DC charger for aux battery is unlikely to be more than 50AH so the factory 70AH is plenty. In these days of low amp draw driving lights, huge output alternators are not needed.

      Never seen a good after market alternator, reco the original.
      Why do people think they need 170amps is beyond me!

      Can the wiring in the vehicle handle the extra amps??

      Kevin Etherton if you flatten a couple of batteries it’s easy to draw that amount, the standard fusible link won’t.

    I understand that there's logically no reason to carry a spare timing belt however they weigh nothing and who knows? I was travelling with my partner in her Suzuki Vitara (not a big overland trip) and something wasn't right so I looked at the timing belt. For some reason it wasn't running true, it had nearly destroyed itself on one side and had cut a groove in the water pump housing. We didn't have a spare belt but we needed one. The local garage was able to source one but it took time. In a remote region it would have been a huge problem.
    My advice is to carry an old timing belt as a spare because you might just need it.

    If you are going to wade through rivers and high dust environs, would it not be better to re-position the radiator and condenser to somewhere safer? Preferably w an easier ability to hose it down.
    In older says, it was natural to use the engine to run the radiator fan but these days electric fans and directed air flows can channel air through them quite easily.

      Electric fans on a 4WD are rubbish. They block airflow and don't like going under water. You could reposition the radiators onto the roof to keep them away from mud dust and flies but where would you put the solar panel then?

    • @Amarjeet1970
      @Amarjeet1970 4 года назад +1

      @@einfelder8262 I was thinking of the roof and moving the solar panels to the bonnet. But all of that requires a bucket load of works.....
      Or the radiators on top of the bonnet; so even if it leaks there isn't a chance of scalding the driver and rider.

      You can fit an on off switch which allows you to switch off the fan when doing water crossings. But for grass seeds a seed capture mesh fitted temporary in front of the radiators works best.

      Theres more risk moving critical parts like a radiator around. Once again if something goes wrong in a remote area, standard parts are easier to find. Theres no benefit in moving the radiator around, t Paul is imparting knowledge on best practice. Electric fans are rubbish
