My son just asked me what age-discrimination meant,
but he's too young to understand.

my grandma planned on retiring from both jobs at 67 but she broke her arm at 62 so she stopped waitressing and retired from dmv at 65 because of family issues
That's stupid, what's the point of sacking her if she's doing her job? She'll probably be better at her job than some young person, she has the experience where others don't.

Unbelievable... yet believable. I rarely meet anyone over the age of 60 at my work and then within a year of doing so, they are gone. It is like Logan's Run where you give up your life at 30. And to think we are living longer. Can't imagine 30 years of not working! Best to keep busy and volunteer.
Lovely lady. I am so sorry this happened to her. The many years of service an employee serves does not matter. Employers discard dedicated employees away like a disposable piece of garbage.

It is terrible. They got rid of me because after falling I could not physically do some job tasks. I was 56 when this happened. They verbally abused me in different ways. This is in the USA where you are supposed to be able to work until you are 65 or they changed it to 67 now. We need laws in the US and in England to prevent this from happening.

Sheriz, It is age discrimination. She simply wasn't fired. It clearly says in the letter that she is being let go because she is turning 65. It's very unfortunate. I hope that she was able to find other meaningful employment. In Ontario it is against the law to discriminate anyone based on age. The problem is trying to proof that it was age discrimination cases usually aren't as clear as this.
A very lovely individual. This is a very courageous woman & God alone will bless her. She has spoken & dealt the situation a blow, like a true saint in this video. A person is only as old as they feel; everyone feels their age independently of rules & advertisements, though many seem to respond to certain propaganda, does not make it the norm. One should be allowed to work as long as they wish if they can handle the job & do it satisfactorily.
Age discrimination is just wrong. I have a piece of unsolicited advice for those of any age who are employed. Do not depend on your job for all of your income. These employers can and do get rid of you for all sorts of reasons. Wherever you are in life start working toward financial independence, or at least not being totally dependent on your job. Just think, where will you be at tomorrow if your job disappears, and your income with it.
This is the best piece of advice a person can give. Sadly they don't teach it at university.
too late for me bro, 53 , nothing saved , work in the education industry, 2 jobs , end of month skint as hell.......just any incident away from being on the road.

Diane you are beautiful. I am sorry this happened to you. I noticed a young girl pouring wine at the table ( server) I'm sure they wouldn't hire anybody older in the restaurant either.
this was made 15 years ago and is still true to today. It must be worse now that inflation has hit so many retired people.
Anyone who has this type of problem should make a stink about it and go to the news media. If you can find a lawyer that will represent you for a decent price then sue. I try not to spend my money or patronize any business that discriminates against older workers.
I cant do it. Im 44 and I cant make it to 68 - my legs are going already. Maybe the queen can do it - but im poor in a low paid job and crap food. Being forced to sing god save the queen what about us.
The UK do have such laws and mostly by the fact that it is a EU directive. Unfortunately the UK protects its workers very poorly (since Thatcher I've been told).
Very few cases have been taken to court in the country, and it is just sickening. I know for a fact that in Surrey the companies communicate between them to discuss the best strategy to adopt to get rid of the over 50's.
The way the worker is unprotected makes it impossible to raise such claim. The lawyers wont accept a no win no fee.

@kckc1975 I am so sorry to hear this its so bad I say to myself why is society so bad , they say you need to work until your 67 but its all bullocks , but when you slow down because off age your out the door, in my head i feel like saying you are bad people, I hope your better know, my history is i was homeless loads off times advice if you have a big house downsize.
I understand her anger, but I can't wait until I am 65, whish if lucky will be next December. I'm looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life without a boss telling me what to do, and for the first time in life to be able to make my own schedule, with job considerations getting in the way.
Is age discrimination. If you're 50 or older. Companies will replace you with younger workers. They think since you're old. You no longer be able to do the job. Don't even bother by looking for a job. They're aren't going to hire you. I have filled out about a dozen application for jobs. Haven't heard from any of them. Even with my experience. 41yrs of management and retail. Since I'm 60, I can't retired. Only job you going to get is delivering food for Door Dash or Uber Eats.

Oh how employment law has changed and not for the better. I remember back in the 70's when there were a good many strikes. People forming picket lines and asking their fellow workers not to cross. In those days Unions represented the workforce and if a person had a grievance, they took it to someone in the chain of command and then if it was not resolved a union representative who may be one of the workforce would talk to management. Those were the days when the working man and woman had representation and if they believed they were being taken advantage of, could speak out to their union. Sometimes it was resolved and sometimes it lead to a 'go slow' or a ballot for action. Sadly the working man and woman today are between a rock and a hard place, because employers appear to have more power to sack and dismiss without question or on a whim. They are even able to use the system to their advantage and not give proper rights to holidays or benefits. As for this post, I would imagine this lady has been discriminated against. It used to be procedure that before being dismissed a worker would be given a verbal warning, then a written warning and I think, on the next meeting shown the door. That is how I remember it used to be, but not so sure now. I am not sure how many have to join a union for it to be recognised by the company? It used to be 5, but many employees would rather sell their souls to the devil than join a union or even report a colleague for speaking out about treatment or pay.

The United States is just as bad. Despite the fact that people can sue for age descrimination, it happens all the time here. I'm a software developer in my 50s. In my forties people said I interviewed with said I looked old.
organise politically worldwide, national and locallt. read books about the Blue Zones and for example watch videos of David Sinclair and likewise. you will be inspired and ageism will be defeated
Apparently Im too young to work. Im 17. And employers prefer older, more expeirienced people. Channel 4, give me a job in your creative media department.... please :D
