This performance would already be great if it had been sung by a Swedish choir. But the fact that these are non-Swedish speaking boys and girls singing this from memory makes it all the more astounding. Incredible domain of the pronunciation and an impeccable, moving performance. Congratulations.

Wow... I´m a Swede, visiting Wisconsin, my Mexican wife working with herbal medicine asks me about "hierbabuena" in Swedish... I tell her it´s "krusmynta" and then find this recording (with the word "krusmynta" in it, as any Swede would know). And my mind travels to... New Zeeland...! What a fantastic world we are living in! Great performance, as a Swede I´m humbled, I´m happy, I´m proud.

Being Swedish and attended Westlake Boys High '82-'83, looked for it here and found this. Just fantastic and very beautiful. A trad song about what flowers to eat for practical birth control can be beautiful. :-)
That's a myth. None of the plants mentioned have any such effects or were ever considered to have any such effects, and this assertion doesn't appear until comparatively late in history, making this a modern myth. But it's a compelling one, I grant you.

Minor correction: Hjärtansfröjd, lit. “hearts' joy”, is the old name of a plant we now call citronmeliss. I believe it's called lemon balm in English. But the wordplay is definitely on purpose.
That, was absolutely gorgeous, and very well done. Only by knowing before and that you are English-speaking did I notice the oh so slight accent. You absolutely nailed it.

@@user-tt3vp1uw6o Håller helt med William. Uttalet är helt fantastiskt för att vara amerikaner. När jag hörde detta första gången tog det ett tag in i sången innan jag förstod att det inte var en svensk kör.
Det är förvisso extremt ovanligt med skoluniform i Sverige. Jag reagerade dock mer över att det var så många elever med asiatiskt påbrå i kören. Det har vi ju inte i Sverige.
Framförandet är i mitt tycke helt enastående. Otroligt duktig gymnasiekör! Naturligtvis ännu svårare att sjunga på ett helt främmande språk.

Med all säkerhet, då det är standard för alla klassiska sångare att veta vad de sjunger om. Vi sjunger inte bara stavelser, vi sjunger meningar i ett språk. Mina körledare har alltid lärt ut betydelsen av låten och ibland vissa meningar för att vi i kören skall kunna sjunga med inlevelse som om vi själva sade det på språk som texten är skrivet på.

Nice try. They get the "u" in "ljuva" and "ö" in "fröjd" nicely.
The "ä" in "hjärtans" is a bit off; needs to be opened up.
But in all a nice effort, Swedish is really hard to pronounce perfectly.
To all the people who thinks this speaks of an abortion-potion.
The fact is most scholars think it is just a song that welcomes/celebrates summer. Why would Blåbär be mentioned? To kill a baby ? It even mentions that he should make her a wreath out of the flowers which he puts in her hair, just as we always do around midsummer. People need to read the lyrics.
Sure summer is a time of life, and that wreath as a gift might lead to lovemaking. But to leap unto birth-control from that is ludicrous. If you havn´t tested the recipe yourself and studied its effects on fertility, you don´t have nothing except myth.
Is this song about making a love potion? The flowers seemed to be components of a witches brew.

And also long swedish tradition! Its been sung since the 1800s in choirs and schools of Sweden, we sang it a few times each semester from when I was about 6-12 in my school

It's a good story. I've heard it too, but unfortunately it's a myth. The flowers and herbs mentioned in the song were once used as medicinal plants, although not for abortion.
You are right. These are not dangerous herbs and definitly not to a fetus. Have a mint and sage tea to ease your cold. But thats about it.
