David Garibaldi: The master of groove and master of not *overplaying-show-them-your-chops-at your-loudest* school of drumming lol. A treat to watch, so up close!
Back in the 70's David's dad was the head of the school bus barn in my town and every time TOP would get ready to go on tour, they warmed up with a free concert for the HS kids in the valley. BUMP CITY baby!
Great to see him up close. Such an amazing drummer and asset to the drumming community. He is always looking to share his knowledge and experience. Close to perfection as you can get.
Back in the mid 90's( 93/94?) I was playing in the Brian Setzer Orchestra. We played the Filmore and Bernie Dresel hired Mr. Garibaldi to cover soundcheck for him because he had a session back in Los Angeles. During the soundcheck , Brian kept telling him " Feel free to play louder " . After about the third time he turned to us in the trumpet section and asked if Brian was jerking his chain ? We told him No. Bernie was really F'n loud and don't worry about it. The look on Garibaldi's face was priceless. Moral of the story. You don't have to play too loud to drive a band especially when you're mic'd . Loved Bernie , but he sure worked hard and busted the ears of the 3rd trumpet and 3rd bone players. Glad to see he recovered so we'll.
SW, you made interesting observations....implication being that Bernie D. plays very loud on drums and David G. maybe not so much. .....at least in the context of what Brian Setzer and his band-mates were accustomed to. Do I have it right? I've seen Bernie perform live a few times with Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat boys.....man, an honor to hear him play in that orchestra....Gordon let Bernie go loud and let him improvise and exhibit the showmanship that he is/was so good at. Excellent drummers, both.
@@davidwinn721 I should have said that Bernie played to Brian's taste. He once subbed on Ladd Macintosh's swing band and played at a more comfortable volume. No loud Guitar to compete with. Bernie is also a master percussionist playing mallets, tympani etc...
I was fortunate enough to catch Mr. Garibaldi at a guitar center drum clinic back in the mid 90’s here in south east Texas. Those ghost notes he plays still haunt me till this day! The true jam master!!!! He’s still rocking his signature snare.
Mr. "In-the-pocket." Solid as a rock. Literally invented an entire genre of drum grooves and licks for funk. Intelligent, focused, drummer. I wonder what it takes for the people who gave this a thumbs down???
EAST BAY'S FINEST ENSEMBLE. BACK TO OAKLAND FROM ALBUQUERQUE. ALBUQUERQUE BORN EAST BAY RAISED. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE TOWER OF POWER AND WAR PLAYED. CINCO DE MAYO WEEKEND 2019. GOT TO SEE THEM BACK IN 2009 AT ROUTE 66 CASINO AND RESORT AND THEN IN 1993 AT THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY FAIR WOODY HARRELSON AMD HIS BAND OPENED UP FOR TOWER OF POWER THAT EVENING. MY POPS GOT TO SHAKE WOODY'S HAND RIGHT AFTER THEIR SHOW. MEMORABLE MOMENT IN TIME.
Growing up, whenever heard these guys, never paid attention to color/gender. Now, as an elder, that's Inconsequential! ALL that matters is the groove, feel & danceability! Keep on Bumpin', TOP!

isn't strange that i thought it would somehow sound different? when it sounds just like every other job i've played in the last 30 years. me and the bass player...!
No! Sadly enough. Rocco was replaced due to health issues for about 2 years ago. And of course it had to just a few weeks before I went to see them in Copenhagen. :-(
@@metaltimeyouscreamweroll3072 oh man, so sorry to hear that. He was such an amazing player. I saw them here in the Bay area back in the 80s and it was just mind bending how Garibaldi and Rocco could lock up. I also saw James Brown a number of times in that era and even his band couldn't lock like tower power. There was just something very special about that combination
Dave is playing really safe these days and not laying down the risky licks that used to come natural in the past. His accident in 2017 really took the wind out of his sails.
Remember he was hit by a train and survived, two hip replacements plus surviving 70’s !! DAVID is in his 70’s too. I tip my hat to Dave for creating those iconic drum beats that forever will be Immortalized, just go back and play along with those groove and see if you can even come close for example “Oakland Stroke” most drummers that been around for over 50 years and still out there doing it bravo 👏 besides being a real cool guy. Thank you DAVID I salute you.
I won't hate you, after two hip replacements and getting hit by a train I think he's still holding down the fort as best he can and in his 70's. David was a big influence in my life and still is. He is a dear friend of mine. I bought the first album when it first came out "East Bay Grease" and was hooked ever since. His early recordings will be immortalized for generations to come. Thanks for your honesty...

Sound great David.
Such ease: relaxed limbs, no rushing the fills, and a fat-ass groove. It’s always a treat to watch masters in action up close like this. #goals
@Roel Kuiper, exactly! :)
instablaster.
he’s got nothing to prove, it’s only about groove

That brother is playing those drums so effortlessly, so smooth!!!!

Delicatezza e precisione impressionante!!!! Grande Garibaldi!!!!
I m impressed how DAVID with very few arm movements gets a full dynamic sound out of his drums. Grts from Europe
I love these guys! Have so for so many years now.
Thanks for posting this and Thank You Mr Garibaldi!
Love to see david playing on his signature snare! I have the same one...
One of the most amazing bands of all times!
Yes! I've seen some great shows, but never a better band. Tight as a tick! Made me want to quit playing music for a while after I'd see them.
Awaaaah Yeeeaaaaa . I can't get tired of that groove when you guys play it .
Love this song! He's such a legend and inspiration to my drumming.
He’s like a Swiss watch....his timing is impeccable!
As song lyrics state...."Groove is in the heart!"
great touch. thanks for sharing!
This is so cool!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!!
Love the piccolo snare. Totally cool. Perfect cymbals for his sound 2. Thanks. One of the greats.
They are SO TIGHT you couldn't drive a straight pin up their hiney's with a sledge hammer!!! Superb musicians, all!
what a beat, i love this
Amazing!
The Man....solid as the Rock of Gibraltar..!
One of the grooviest drummers ever..
Glad to see he’s all healed up. One of my heroes.
still love his grooves and his attitude!!
They’re so tight! I feel like they’re connected with MIDI cables
"Ghost Note" Garibaldi...🤙🏽😎
That's why he and Roco just fit so well. Roco uses ghost notes.
Right in the pocket.
Gnarly Garibaldi...
Officially a geek, loved this.

From beat one you can feel the pocket. Amazing.
Never knew DG used 2 snares...? Timing and feel STILL impeccable!!!!
David does love his piccolo, it adds great contrast for his dynamics
would be fun to see Mike Clark sit in some time.
Also, it looks like two high-hats (one that stays closed to right of his bass drum). Yep, he still sounds great!
It's called (an) Auxiliary hat or hats
Saw him 98 or 99 in Helsinki, oh, what a gig it was!
Saw this show with War
Great Show
Су ма сшедшие,обожаю вас
...loves those thin 3" snare drums!... and No double BD pedal... ...My Man!...

Rocco and he were a true duo

Giddy-up! Hi Ho Silver...
Just as wicked as it seems.
Beautiful day for some funk
Monster percussionist.

Chuck brown student .he’s one of many great drummers chuck taught.
He'll yeah! Still schooling everyone on that kit

Those two snares sound almost exactly the same lol. Both sound great tho. :)
DG !! 🤙
The Jam Master it is
That you Bigfoot?
It's funny, they are kind of doing the Boneshaker's version of that song.
finesse
Don’t change horses. Great tune and for sound check

Where is the warm up?
Dave is on guitar also!
"Dave does drumming come easily to you?" "Piece of cake"
Piece of Squib Cake
Dave was born for the drums,,,
Nathan Walters the days when it was Dave, Chester, Bruce, and Rocco. Could have been their own four piece band.

The red snare sounds like a .22 rifle.
3.21 !!!
Eastbay Grease in that Pocket
Wheres Rocco?
extra cool to see DG doesn't have a double bass pedal...
Lol why would you need a double bass pedal in a funk band?
Or two bass drums....
@@ericmsandoval tee hee...who DOESN'T have a double pedal now?!?

It just isn't the same without Rocco
agreed-mad nice replacement though
Or Chester
This guy sounds good. Tone is out of this world too.
Yeah. Not the same at all.....
RIP Rocco.
What is hip? You is , TOP
Mic Check one ---Jerry Manuel.
He plays with the song and the band, not like he's a "signature "drummer who needs to impress other drummers with extra chops and fills....
Right!
Too old for that crap.
Don’t change horses in the middle of a stream
And don’t change urinals in the middle of the stream
The fill immediately after had two rimshots, so you're still getting your money's worth.
Don't Change Horses!

Post train accident, no sign of injuries.
Man bests train ... he is the real Man of Steel. Mark VW quite strong too!
Can someone tell me what happened to Mr Francis Rocco Prestia?
Thankful from Brazil.
@Gianni Abbenda Awesome bass player! Master!
Thanks for your attention.
He and David created almost every groove that TOP turned into "songs"...
DG POCKET ROCKET 😆🐒
yep. lock it in the pocket.
Can't hear the Guitar...
Anita Lenore It’s all in their ears and in the house. No live guitar sound on stage.
Spaun Drums
Garibaldi could really use to practice with a metronome.
Because we need better calibrated metronomes.
I vote we trash the metronomes and just practice with Dave. All in favor, say "aye."

Who cares? we all human.
Happens to everyone - Even tho his drumming is superhuman - he's a real person actually!
Something with the drums, and the timing, sounds a little off, sorry. Go ahead and hate me. That’s what I am picking up.
