    Absolute legend this guy is, Jonathan Dunn has created some of the most fantastic tunes across his time on home computers and consoles, like many greats of the C64 era, Dunn just proved even if a game wasn't that good, the music can still be the most stand out part about it, and of course created perfect mood matching soundtracks as well to good and recognized games. If one things for sure, I love his style on the C64 (and even the ZX Spectrum), truly no other composer like him and so happy to see him be given respect on this Artist Feature!
    Obviously Dunn is most well known for his C64 work, and was surprised to see only a few titles here, but a lot of his OST's/compositions are unique to where I know majority of them probably didn't work into the mix, but while I love his stuff like Platoon, Target Renegade, Operation Wolf and Rambo 3, I cannot deny his greatest achievement is the RoboCop Title theme, the beauty in that tune is just unmatched, I would truly rank it among one of the best VGM themes of all tune, and the C64 version definitely gets me choked up emotionally, it's that powerful. It's great it received more attention and praise in the Internet age, it's one of his most perfect compositions. And its really sweet to see some ZX songs highlighted, not since the Tim Follin feature I believe has the console been heard from, obviously the AY sound is great, but still love me some Beeper. And funny to think Renegade 3 being a bit of a point where distrust from gaming review magazines happened, feels like something you wouldn't think happened until recently with game review (score) criticisms. Also nice Puzznic inclusion, love it.
    Also funny enough for the longest time I only knew the Darkman OST from an "Overclocked NSF" version that was the only rip of the music, and its actually nice basically hearing that version worked into the Mix for the Darkman track, which by god why did Dunn go so hard on that soundtrack, and literally why did he go so hard with the samples, those beats are BEEFY, I think that is his best NES work right next to Jurassic Park (which very shocked songs from that version didn't make it into the mix, along with some of Dunn's other solo NES & Game Boy work). Also holy hell the tingles come again from those transitions into Addams Family and Jurassic Park, hot damn Dunn was a master as well on the SNES, even for the few games he did on that console, he knocked it out of the park. And of course, the 2000's come along and Dunn slowly started to phase out of VGM, but holy hell did he give us a great OST with Aqua Aqua, that soundtrack was the perfect transition into his House work, I still listen to Sunrise consistently, he really could have kept going with that and be a great DJ.
    But sad to see his activity be so little in recent time, I hope someone has pointed him in the direction of this video, this was a superb feature of what I still feel is a massively underrated video game music composer, but happy I always see people in the comments feel the same way I do with the respect and infatuation of this channel, this is absolutely some of the best content their is. You can say I always feel "Closer" when listening to the GST Channel! ;) 💙

    WOW ! I did not know that Mr. Jonathan Dunn (one of my C64 tune heroes) is Soularis! "Sunrise" was one of my most played tracks as a beach house DJ... BTW I really like it that you "mixed" the tracks a little bit.

    Lovely mix, and some real Jamiroquai vibes on the last song. Sweet changeup at 9:14 too. I used to listen to the Puzznic tune regularly on my Atari ST in the 1990s. It came cracked on a menudisk with a 50/60hz toggle option, and I quickly decided that the music was much better suited to 60hz mode (it played back faster because the player routine was probably hooked into the vertical blank interrupt).

    Oh wow! Jonathan Dunn! I always wanted to know what his inspiration was behind the Robocop theme tune. Not just because it was a tune you wouldn't necessarily expect to hear for a game like this but in general it was an unusual tune. I was amazed to hear it on the Ariston ad but its a shame he never got widely credited for it.

    It's so strange to think that the composers that composed these amazing retro video game soundtracks are no longer interested in pushing the capabilities of old sound chips anymore.

    • @DeconTheed92

      Nikku4211 I suppose that’s a consequence of not only *having* to use such hardware, rather then using it by choice, but having to do so with deadlines and corporate red tape looming over their heads the entire time. Many of them simply don’t have the exact same affinity for sound chips we listeners or modern day chip musicians do, having created it under vastly different circumstances.
      Of course, that’s not universally true; some composers that used the chips at the time still dip their toes back into the fray to some degree. Generally it seems to be more of a trend for eastern composers, though- the FM Sound Module Maniax doujin album brought together composers like Yoko Shimomura, Shinji Hosoe, and Motoaki Furukawa (among others) to produce new tunes using old FM sound chips, purely for the love of the sound. Manabu Namiki has been hired to create works using older chips, as well- particularly the Konami ReBirth Wiiware titles and several projects released by M2.

      @@mahj It's still strange to think that such composers don't have the same appreciation for their old works that people like GST have today, considering how great they were at them.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  4 года назад +14

      @Nikku4211 I think it's a little different than that. The mindset is "use your available tools to squeeze out the best possible sounds".
      in 1989, the best tool were the 8580 or 2612. Now, you have pretty much no limit to the tools, so its just a matter of your skills with using them. I admire Frank Klepacki for constantly embracing new tools and techniques, even if he's not sticking to the limitations of old chipsets.
      plenty of artists still appreciate old chipsets for their aesthetic but don't bother with the limitations any more. After all, there are new tools available.
      Sometimes you'll get artists that like to work within the limitations still, but that's more rare. (Matt Furniss and Jeroen Tel come to mind, as well as the JP artists that Decon Theed mentioned)
