    I bought this complete system after watching this video. I'm by no means a sharpening pro I'm a novice but with this system I've been able to put razor sharp edges on all my knives and with the ceramic rods I've been able to get my serrated blades to razor sharp. it's a fail proof system! Thanx for the video!!God bless!

    Thanks for the review. I just bought the complete system. It seems to be a nice alternative to using the sharpening stones. Just an fyi, if you're sharpening a really expensive knife, they recommended to cover the rest of the blade with masking tape to protect the blade from being scratched. Personally, I would use the blue painter's masking tape so no residue is left behind.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  4 года назад

      I would think if you have a knife that you are concerned about being scratched you probably won't use it enough to need sharpening anyway ;-)

    I've got the Worksharp belt drive system. It's amazing for kitchen knives. Boot knives not so good. Folders pretty darn good for a quick three two passes on each side touch up. It's EZ to ruin tips and my swiss is just eaten up the small blade, but I was new when I sharpened it and didn't realize how much it was taking off and how quickly. I did my Gerber pro and I'm not getting hair cutting sharp but I'm getting paper cutting and really nice feeling sharp to my finger. Which is good enough. I love the fact as I said it takes about two minutes to put an edge on most blades. Worksharp puts out some nice products. Once you learn how to use them. Thx Brian.

    Newbie here...I came late to the party!
    I was just delivered my 1917 Frontier Bowie by Cold Steel and it won't cut butter.The blade is so big(12.25in) that it seems that there isn't enough stone to sharpen the entire blade in one pass.
    What do you think? Can it be done?
    Thanks for the video and your efforts!

    I use the smaller, more portable version of that called the guided field sharpener. It's great to throw in a bag or take with you outdoors. The thing works like a charm. I'm not the best knife sharpener, but I took some old useless blades from dull to shaving my arm hairs in a few minutes. Work Shsrp puts out good stuff IMHO.

    Best sharpening system I seen this far as I don't like guide rods etc, might have to pick up one of those.
    I usually freehand sharpen and strop, but that takes some concentration to get it right, with those start angle guides its easy enough to sharpen a blade even on days when your not quite up for it.

    I was about to comment that you missed the built-in 22 degree angle but you mentioned it briefly in passing at about the 12:30 mark. I think that several people are missing this when doing their reviews. I am hoping to have my kit by the end of the week so that I can do some fine tuning of my own blades.

    By the way Brian the 14" Old Hickory is what he's using, I have a serious question Brian, can this system sharpen a Convex edge like on my Bark River Bravo 1, actually I like putting a convex even on my Saber Grinds like my Swamp Rat Rodent Series I call it the saber vex grind, another thing you can carry this sharpening system in the bush and in camp it's compact enough. I think they even have a smaller one too ?

      Charles Larson You know what I like about Bryan's channel? it's the level of reality. there's a mess of bushcrafters that act like hey this is all you need... IT ISN'T. I mean look at how idiotic some of these people look on Naked and Afraid and Alone... People with the skills we all practice. Skill is NO sub for preparation. I mean the Boy scout motto told us that when we were 12..... I ain't saying don't LEARn how to make fire with a ferro rod or a bow drill... most fires I light I light with a lighter. I mean, on the real... regular fella... I wouldn't EVER agree to a long term challenge on 10 pieces of kit... IMO that's foolish... 21 days sleeping in a space blanket, I could do it, but that is equally stupid. In MY 4wd I have many tools, Spares a CB and my go bag that covers Dave Canterbury's 10 c's well.. Nah about 8 of them. Oh and 6 thirty minute road flares...... I mean my man they wouldn't have invented all this crap if it wasn't needed... Go into the wilderness with no firearm? MADNESS.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  6 лет назад +2

      @@OmegaMan999 it's awesome for beginners because the way it pivots helps keep you from messing up a knifes tip. Tips are usually the first thing a beginner screws up. I love mine and the only con I have found is all your friends will want you to sharpen their knives lol. Get the extra kit with the extra fine, extra coarse and strop plates and you'll be sharpening like a pro in a few hours!!!!!! Good luck!!

    Great review Bryan, I been thinking about getting one of the worksharp sharpeners, but don't know which one, the original cost about $70 and this one is $60 + $35 for the other kit. $70 for the one that runs on power, or $95 for a manual one! Which one do you think would be better for a fella that's not-so-great at sharpening. Thanks

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 лет назад

      Well, the main difference (other than the electricity thing) is that the electric Worksharp puts a slight convex edge on everything. The Guided system allows you to put a flat bevel. I have never used the electric ideal but I know a lot of people who swear by it.

    • @jjw650jones5
      @jjw650jones5 9 лет назад

      Is the extra stones a must have, or can you live without them, I just hate to buy the manual one and end up paying more, and I'am on the fence about the convex edge of the electirc, I reckon I will have to think about and just pull the trigger one one of them. Thanks for the info!

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 лет назад

      If you can swing it the upgrade kit is well worth it. It does a good job without it but the upgrade is like icing on a cake. Especially the leather strop. And the 220 grit is great for really bad edges.

    Best controlled angle sharpener I've used so far is the Edge Pro Apex. Nothing else is even close. I use a Lansky hone to sharpen a lot of knives, take them up to 2000 grit and strop them. But if money was no object it would buy an Edge Pro. There's much to be said for old school sharpening though and some guys might call me gear dependent, to them I say oh well, an Arkansas stone is gear too. (I can sharpen with just a regular stone)

    Hi Bryan, Great review but a couple of questions: Will the gauntlet reviewers be giving these systems away? Just asking as from what I understand the 'Gauntlet was set up to address two main concerns A) Reviewers may be biased as they are getting items for free to review and keep & B) Smaller companies are able to get a single item through several reviewers, ie they can't afford to give away 10 items.
    Now I see larger companies (Schrade, worksharp etc) giving the gauntlet an item each and we're back to the old system? Just a thought as the idea of the Gauntlet was a great step to alleviate viewers concerns and give some good exposure to smaller companies & I'd hate for it to stray from it's intended purpose.

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  9 лет назад

      castortroy365 That is still the way it is intended to work. However, certain situations may arise that require a little flexibility. For example, Worksharp wanted us to each have a chance to get familiar with the system so they sent us all one. Which kind of makes sense since it isn't like a knife where you're testing the edge durability and etc. As for Schrade, they sent several samples of Chris' knife to a couple of us, but we are still passing them around. Mine went Feral Bushcraft and will be traveling on from there. Since I had issues with the factory edge, Jon went ahead and reviewed a different sample and had the same concerns. Without writing a novel here, the spirit of The Gauntlet is alive and well. The original premise is still valid and we are doing our best to handle each situation in the most effective manner.
      Just please bear in mind also that another one of the premises of The Gauntlet is to give the viewers a wide range of opinions on a particular piece of gear. We actually had a sort of "brain storming" session last night to discuss some of these very topics. One thing that came up was about branching out to cover more than just knives. As we add more variety there will be situations where we have may need to feel our way through.
      And, we are still focused on providing smaller companies some much needed exposure but that doesn't mean we are going to ignore larger companies either. One of our goals is to bring as many high quality products as we can to The Gauntlet so viewers can make informed buying decisions.
      I just hope everyone realizes that this entire process is still in its infancy and we are sure to have some growing pains. Please rest assured we are committed to making The Gauntlet a fair and unbiased place for you to check out gear and for manufaturers and makers to get needed exposure for their stuff.
      And (I got to rambling and almost forgot) we're working on a Worksharp Giveaway. Please be patient and stay tuned.

      Thanks for the in depth reply Bryan :) I understand there will be unique situations along the way with teething problems and of course those who will never be satisfied no matter what lol.
      I'm sure 'The Gauntlet' is in good hands with some of my favourite reviewers in charge.
      I'm outside of US, so don't really expect entry's into giveaways as I realise postage/customs regs make this prohibitive, but I love the reviews and concept.

    Hi Brian good review its a very nice and clever tool i am impressed. I am still in the medieval times when it comes to sharpening i do with sandstone :-) but i get em rasorsharp too and can shave hair with it but it takes some time and it depends on the steel. Stay well!

      Shadowman It is a nice system and is very easy to use. In my opinion a lot of things could be more affordable ;-)

      True :-) i think i ll go with their guided field sharpener its more affordable for me :-) But if they would make the upgrade kit cheaper much more ppl would probably buy it. More sold pieces = more money for them. Have a nice day!

    Im tempted to just buy the upgrade and glue them to a block of wood thats a value on its own two diamond plates a strop and compound for 35 bucks is good

      I'm completely serious when I say I think you would be missing out if you do that. The system is just so versatile. I don't know of anything else on the market that really compares.

    Brian, you ruined my comment, you have so much hair on your arms, you obviously don't test your blades sharpness but then you did! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!))

    what is the purpose of the burr in the initial strokes ?

    • @SurvivalOnPurpose
      @SurvivalOnPurpose  8 лет назад

      +Happy Camper It's just a result of the sharpening process because when you remove the metal from one side it eventually gets so thin that it bends to one side and forms a burr. It's not really a "purpose", more like a "result"

    • @happycamper9300
      @happycamper9300 8 лет назад

      +Survival On Purpose Maybe the question should be: why not make one pass in each side, why you need to make about 10 passes have a burr, then 10 passes on the other side. I saw the promo video and they actually recommend a few passes up the point that the burr is obtain. I know that when you pass a single side is like a micro bending on the edge, what I do not get is the need to pass a single side until the burr is there. (hope burr is spell correctly)

      Happy Camper I know I am 7 months late, but basically creating a burr and then moving the burr to the next side will straighten the edge and brings it to its fullest potential

    • @kssaint6290
      @kssaint6290 7 лет назад

      The purpose of a burr in the initial strokes is, creating the "apex" of the edge. What is the "apex" of an edge? The apex of the edge is the point where the sharpening of both sides of the blade meets. Once burr is created on both sides of an edge, the blade is already sharp, so either move to the next stone with a higher grit, or start the stropping process to remove the burr, and give the edge a polished look.

    The reason they tell you not to run off the edge of the stone is negative you round the tip of your knife. a lot of people like to keep their tip needle sharp

    You apologized for saying honing a knife. Yes, stroping is the new term but in my eyes, you are finishing it. I feel this is correct. Call me out, that is fine.
