In today’s episode, we’re exploring the Hudson River State Hospital in Poughkeepsie, New York. Dating back to 1867, this historic structure was an iconic symbol of the development of new treatments for the mentally ill. Unfortunately, the main structure has been neglected for many years and has severely decayed.

After our great-grandparents paid for these things to be built to take care of the people in our society that are mentally ill.... Evidently, Brian's going to be the first to die. Thoughts of "foolish" and "stupid" came to mind, but I settled on "adventurous". 😸
I would never do that, but I'm thrilled to watch videos taken by explorers willing to take the risk. Yes, I think I've found the word: "explorers". They're the ones that are always dying, be it in an abandoned building or at the South Pole. There's something glorious, passionate about such quests.
Now I'm feeling guilty for, in my tiny way, encouraging you. But you'd do it if I was here or not. So I might as well enjoy the show while saying a little prayer to whatever gods there may be: That they may keep you safe to pursue your beautiful endeavor.

Being super confident as you've explored the place several times vs. decay's giving you a heart pounding reality check. Glad no one was hurt and you got to see that floor one last time.

But those buildings are much less a death-trap for cats. Cats are light, can leap great distances, and are 100 times more agile than any Olympic gold medalist.

You guys: this video deserves an award. This is amazing. The architectural background, the historical photos, the 70’s cinematic style slow zooms, the music, the contrasting, the final shot of the sigil! You guys could make a feature length film and really make it something special. This is some Herzog level stuff guys

These Slow Motion side scans are so Flawless. (like Brian's butt).
It's what really sets them apart from other urbex channels. Their videos are the gold standard and so well done. It was what originally drew me and has kept me with them ever since. They also tend to do a good job of guiding you through the places well so it helps you feel like you haven't missed anything.

Whats sad is the fact that much of this site is scheduled for demolition with only the main admin building (building with reconstructed roof ) and about five other smaller buildings. That leaves about 85% of the historic registered building to be demolished.The patient wings and everything else will be replaced by housing. The site of the former 1950s building has already been redeveloped as a shopping center with a price chopper and a few more generic stores.
This video made me a nervous wreck. I’m glad nobody got hurt. This is a very dangerous building to explore for anyone.

They’ve been in other derelict buildings before though, they are used to the risk. I’m sure they weren’t TOO surprised at it even though it startled them. lol. Can’t blame ‘em there! I’m just glad Bryan is all right. :)
As always, I enjoy your videos. Parts of this one are great but some parts you have to ask yourself are the rewards worth the risk.
Your channel was one of the first I can remember having ever watched in the urbex realm, and thus it introduced me to the genre. Little could I have realized at the time, then, that it would set the standard for the quality of destinations explored, videography and aesthetic sensibilities, audio quality, and attempting to present relevant context and an informed perspective about the places you're visiting. Your hutzpah continues to be remarkable. Thank you for showing so many of us places that we'd not otherwise realize exist, and for preserving a visual representation of them before they decay so fully that they've been returned to earth in the form of dust and flakes of iron.
I know. I remember the film quality from way back when they hundred thousand subs, it’s definitely impressive how far they have come. Those videos were still great though.
They were one of the first urbex channels I watched and continue to be one of the only ones. They’re some of the most respectful ones I’ve seen and don’t play into the fake haunting crap that’s super common.

Your channel is one of the last good ones...no faking, no annoying music, not loud intros or outtros, annoying dialogs....just perfection. And beautiful imagery and filming, ect. 👏 Brilliant. 🏆
Kind of fun transitioning from a winter scene to a historical photo to a summer scene without mention or explanation. Kind of almost like you're experiencing a time skip or something.
Did anyone notice that at 15:05 the wreckage of the floor above is being held up only by the electrical cables? If those had snapped, it could have been catastrophic.
In other news, it seems that the current owner plans to try and salvage at least part of the structure for future redevelopment. At the very least, it would be nice if some of the materials could be salvaged and find new life in the newer buildings that go up on the site.
I mean it is just a small pile of debris that would be in the basement instead, with the rest of the things nearby
Thanks for telling the tale of my home town’s best-loved ruin. I’m so happy you guys got to experience it at different seasons. This is what started my love of photographing urban decay. Friends and I used to run around here years ago, ducking from security when they were actively patrolling the buildings with motion sensors. The rec center and powerhouse were standouts, especially with the power still whirring away. The rec center had a two-lane bowling alley and spacious Olympic size pool. I remember a chair just chillin’ in the deep end. There was a theatre in the center-back of the grounds that had a massive chandelier, hung with toilet paper and a very small chapel next to it with pews and an organ, virtually untouched. The modern hospital buildings were super unique with rounded wings…it was always such a fascinating thing to see them standing silently in the distance, tagged atop by Evak, anytime I was shopping in the plaza, or driving down Rt. 9 hoping for a glimpse of the glorious Kirkbride.
By the way, that fade-out on HRS at the end was perfect.

The drone shots at the end were breathtaking. I used to live in Poughkeepsie and always felt curious about this building. I knew it was rough but I never imagined it was in such severe decay. Thanks for taking such a big risk so that the rest of us could experience it before its gone. Props!
Most of the decay is thanks to vandalism and arsonists. once a buildings envelope (roof ,windows ,etc ) goes ,there is nothing preventing nature from speeding up decay
Seeing that heavy equipment sitting next to the building, seemingly just waiting to tear it down, is super sad, but you’re right it’s too far gone and dangerous. I really appreciate you guys. Respectful, well researched, and beautifully shot, as always.
Luckily the building is only being partially demolished. The wings are too far gone, but the main admin building is getting restored and turned into apartments. The place is being turned into a whole complex with shops, houses, like a little village. I’ve also read that the majority of text materials from the buildings are being recycled and reused in the new project
It’s already been torn down and is a shopping plaza now.

@@MyPointlessLife83 The 1950s blocky building was torn down .The original building is further up on the hill and was hidden by the dense tree line before they cleared the land.

Medieval Castles have held up longer than this modern structure! Totally awesome exploration. The degree of decay is rather shocking. Loved this one!
It was obvious to me that Bryan was taking extraordinary chances and risks. I felt like he was going to fall through and he did. Glad he did a head check afterwards. No hubris, fellas. Thank you for yet another amazing finished product. Lot's of video editing work. Super good drone shots. Better than any network production IMO.
I’m from the area and was actually driving by the night of the lightning fire. I remember calling my friends saying I could see the flames! Have wanted to see you all cover this one for a long time!! What a great surprise to see it. Glad no one was hurt going through and really appreciate this footage as it all starts to be demolished.
My mother had family both employed and inpatient there - many stories!
I think its interesting that back in the day psych wards and other hospital building often looked castle-like and today they just look bland and boring.
The details on many things like the ceiling and stairs are amazing, today everything is the cheapest way possible it seems.
I wonder for how long a new hospital building will survive when abandoned?

The last moments when decay turns to ruin and its all lost. Sad its too decayed to save but at least one building will survive. Even the architecture in ruin is captivating to see. Amazing. P.S your plank walking skills are excellent. NFG!
Seeing some of those collapsed floors from up high looking down was scary. I’m glad that Bryan didn’t get seriously hurt when his leg went through the floor.

This complex is as beautiful - even now, as it stands - and tragic at the same time, considering it's a national landmark and one of the most important structures of this kind in history. The amount of neglect which sped up the decay is as sad and fuels my anger towards modernity, especially when this place could be saved - at least for the most part - and preserved for the future generations, along with it's history. Without history, there's no future.
You have my eternal gratitude for your valiant efforts to archive whatever's still left of it.
Those shots at the end were just beautiful. Thank you for preserving this for future generations to see.
At first glance you would think the building is quite complete but once you get beyond the threshold it’s shockingly decayed

I can feel the cold air from watching. there is nothing like the feeling of exploring this place in the desolate winter. it’s an experience like no other. definitely one of my favorite places if not favorite place to go to escape. I have almost like a spiritual connection to this place.
This vid combined with the Abandoned Mall Snowstorm one is making me so hyped for winter. But the fact that yall can find these huge abandoned places and explore them while it's snowing is a vibe I wish I could relate to!
I like to see those old lamp fixtures just hanging there after all those years in all 4 seasons

Man, this actually made me a bit sad. I visited in 06 but didn't spend nearly as much time as i would have liked, and even than there were collapses from the attic to the basement, but the majority of the building was still "Safe". I visited again in 18 and I remember some of the walls being collapsed, but not to this extent. Thanks for the upload, complete shame that this building has been left to rot.
Its really ok Michael....with age comes discretion , after all of the amazing places the 2 of you have brought to the world and all of the risks you have taken...if anyone gives you crap....Send them to ME!! This video had my anxiety going in spots, but also had some of the best shots I think I've ever seen from you guys. Some of these Summer shots look like they could have been straight out of The Last of Us and some of the musical choices were chilling. Well done!

I was born in 63. a lot of my youth was spent exploring what once was, after the offshoring and plants closing, some of you understand the feelings it brings or you wouldn't be here.
Awesome documentary guys! Beautifully shot, and yes the snow adds additional atmosphere. The remains of the buildings illuminated by the “golden hour” lighting towards the end is phenomenal!! Also, great to see Bryan still has his COVID hair going-😅
My grandmother worked as a bookkeeper at this location, and my father worked there as well and would take care of patients. Wish you had filmed it before it became a shopping center, and the other structures were still up.

Wow it has been 38 years since I worked there! 30 years for my mom. She worked there for 25 years.
It might sound silly, but I've worked in demo before and you guys might want to consider wearing hard hats exploring ruins like that. A hard hat has saved my noggin a few times walking through these neglected structures with crap falling apart.
You guys certainly never disapoint! So sad such an amazing masterpiece has gone to ruin. But your well done camera work, commentary and music in just the right places works so well. Very few urbex people provide the caliber of content that you produce! You and the Urbandoned guys in the UK produce some of the best urbex content. Always great work! Can't wait for the next!
I am glad you didn't edit out the 'near miss'. Let it be a lesson to the inexperienced Urbexers that all explorations are not safe. It is good to be confident, but also be skeptical. Good job on documenting another historical site before it's gone.

I live 20 minutes from this place. I’ve been in every building on the site including the ones that were demolished. (At the time it was 2009)One of my favorite places to explore. Well. I was wondering what you'd opt to publish after the Pumping Station. Showing both the winter and early fall together was brilliant. Beautiful filming. Really interesting and sad. Thank you for including the Kirkbride information at the top and the historical photos. But please be careful - yeesh! First going into that awful flooded basement with waiters and now this with Bryan nearly going through the floor. Scary, scary, scary but oh, so beautiful.
I explored this place in 2021 working off a cruise ship going up and down the Hudson. I had little time before the ship left, that coupled with the integrity of the floors and jagged wood and presumably rusty nails cut my exploration short. Glad to see what i missed as i regret it still. Beautiful architecture. Thank you

I remember watching you guys what like...six or seven years ago? Holy cow, it was whenever I was maybe a freshman in high school? One of the videos I remember watching, you were in that school and found the stacks of Time magazines. Your videos really did carry me through some odd times, and the places you chose gave me a lot of creative inspiration growing up. I like to check in from time to time, and though it isn't very often, I like to make sure you guys are still going, and even now you are. I watched some other Urbex channels that were either downright annoying and clickbaity or stopped altogether, but this one always prevailed. Honest, respectful, and nicely researched.
Your guys teasing in this video is really funny, I love how you can work as a team to get past fear and nerves. It takes a lot to get through a building so ruined, it only hurts more to think that this place can truly not be saved.

I have been following your channel for years now, and rarely commented. I do feel bad that this building is getting mostly demolished especially that part with arched windows cause that is my favorite part of it. It's sad and my town is also facing many demolitions due to an earthquake we had in 2020. Lots of historical town houses are due for demolition and some are few hundred years old.
I LOVE your guys videos the way you film everything and the details you get. I know there are a lot of others who do the same but you guys Ive followed prob since day 1, and its like it tells a story in a way. Beautiful place!
