It's taken over 40 years to find your explanation and tutorial for long and short stitch. Thank you so much for being so good and de-mystifing this stitch. Loads of love.xxx
I'm so mesmerized by your videos, I can't stop watching them, and I have learnt so much... I think I'm about ready to start my own projects now... thank you Sarah.
I really enjoyed watching this tutorial. I have always struggled to do long and short stitch for shading, but you explained this so nicely that I now want to have another go at it!
I am so happy I found your tutorial. I was having a lot of doubt with my ability to make it look "smoothly painted" like I thought they supposed to look. I was worried about the "dimples" in the stitches, but I understand now that it is just going to be there, and it actually looks like brush strokes. As I watched you it just all came together for me. Love the waltz music. Made me relax and not stress over my ability. Oh, and also... the 2 needles for the 2 colors, I hadn't tried that, but will now. Thank you again for sharing.
This is absolutely fun to watch! I am an intermediate embroiderer and am loving learning all the techniques you show in your videos...I am definitely having a go at this one...so fun and beautiful! thank you for sharing...
Wow the split stitch edging makes for such a beautiful line and adds beautiful dimension. I 'almost' want to go back and rework all the flowers in my most recent WIP... I'll definitely reference this for my next project. Thank you for such clear instructions and beautiful work.
Yes, take what you have learned onto your next project PeptioPen and don't re-do the last one! Always move forwards! Thank you for your comments, glad you are enjoying; lots more to come!
Good morning mam...😊 I am very attractive on your embroidery work... your background music feels like as I am stay United Kingdom...I saw all your tutorial works...Thank you very much...I am an Embroidered past 20 years...And above 10 years Aari work embroidered I love this job with very interesting ...😊😊😊😀😀😀
Thank you Sarah, for another wonderful lesson ( I have also watched the first film) I truly appreciate the work and time these films take to make and I sincerely hope that the negative comments that everyone seems to have to suffer on you tube don't ever put you off !😊💐😊💐😊💐😊💐😊💐😊
Thank you Sonia. I know these videos won't be (can't be?) to everybody's taste but it's good to read so much positive feedback in the comments. It's all that good feedback that keeps me inspired to keep on filming and uploading. Thanks again for your support!
So inspiring, I just want to go and do a piece now. Thank you for doing your videos, it is so nice to see the actual techniques rather than just read about how to .
Good morning Ms. Sarah, I love how you stitch that and how you made that look 👀 so awesome 👏🏿. Thank you for your teaching and sharing with me. Thanks 🙏🏾 so much.
Thanks so much for this tutorial, Sarah! The use of the split stitch border is a great ones, gives it that bit of volume and also a nice 'bund' to prevent over-tightening the individual satin stitches.
Do have a go Tina! I suggest watching through part one and just having a go with a single shape to get the hang of it. Stick to the rules on this technique and you should be good!
Toda una obra de arte! Es como si estuviera pintando la flor con hilos! Mi más grande admiración y sinceras felicitaciones. Además el vals de las flores una pieza de música de mis preferidas. Mil Gracias por compartir su técnica! ❤
Great video. Thanks for the great instructions. I always wondered how shading is done. Now I know, and I can't wait to try it myself. Your work is beautiful.
I wonder if you have a picture of a real flower near by to check on your shading if that would help..you taught me so much from these 2 videos so “thank you so much”!!
I use several reference pictures when I'm working silk shading Sandy: I have a colour reference picture (a photo or a painting I have done myself), a black and white copy for tonal reference, a stitch order and a stitch direction! The more you plan silk shading, the better it comes out; I never start a piece without these bits of information
Do you no longer have a website? I can't get it to come up. I'd love to have a look at your patterns. I'm just starting to get back into embroidery, and I love watching your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your talent, and being such an amazing teacher. 💗💗💗
Me gusta ver sus videos me encanta su trabajo tan bonito los colores. Todo es muy hermoso, no hablo inglés solo español. Quiero darle a usted las gracias de todo corazón. Dios la Bendiga y la acompañe siempre. Muchas gracias
This is similar to the idea of working in wax or colored pencil for your art work, and putting down a wash of harmonizing watercolor over a partial area first to deepen and blend your pencil later from underneath.
I learned to embroider only about 5 months ago and I’m finding that for me this is the toughest stitch. So you have 2 different threads going at the same time? I’ve never seen it done that way and your finished piece is one of the nicest I’ve seen. Was this hard for you as well when you first started? I really look forward to classes opening some day again so I can get some hands on experience with a teacher
Long and short can take a while to get the hang of. There are different ways of doing it, some embroiderers work one colour at a time so only ever have one needle on the go, I was taught to do it this way (at the Royal School of Needlework) and therefore sometimes have up to six needles on the go! Both ways work perfectly well it just depends on how you were taught. I suggest just practicing on a simple petal shape with perhaps two colours to start off with until you get the hang of it. It isn't like learning a single stitch, you have to understnad what you are doing then practice it a lot!
Thank you very much for the tutorial. I had inherited a pre-stamped pillow case (and no instructions) with 4 pansies on it. I had no clue how/what to do with them.
¡Gracias! La parte 1 del proyecto muestra las mismas puntadas a velocidad normal. Puede aprender a hacerlo en la Parte 1 y utilizar la Parte 2 como una guía adicional.
Hi Sarah, thank you for this tutorial. I have tried to do this, not in a pansy but in a daisy and although the principle is the same, mine one looks very messy, I just could not get the mixing right...yours is divided in three sections, ie top, middle and bottom and they blend very nicely. I didn't know where to start or finish so it is all over the place. is there an easy way to know or mark the different sections?
There is no quick way to answer your question Maria, there is a lot of planning involved in silk shading: you have to plan your order of work, work out your stitch directions and have a good colour plan to work from. There is also a process to follow when you start stitching all of which is detailed in my book, The Royal School of Needlework - Essential Stitch Guide to Silk Shading and if you want to have a go at the Pansy, we have a kit available of it with written instructions which you can use alongside the video. The kit is available here: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/cat_1038508-Silk-shading-kits.html We will be doing more silk shading videos so look out for those!
Work the petals at the back first and the ones on top last Susan. Sometimes two petals are in the same position (both left and right orange petals are on top of the purple ones and behind the middle orange one) so it doesn't matter which one you start with
I've noticed your knots are on top, not on the bottom. How do you keep the work together? If you were to use this method on dish towels that will actually be used would it work?
The knots are a waste knot so they get cut off. I put the knot on the top, work two or three small stitches to secure the thread then start the stitching. Once I have finished the stitching, I cut the knot off so it's nice and smooth on the front and the back. If you are working on something that will get quite a bit of use, you could start in the same way but leave a longer thread between the knot and where you start your stitching. Once you have finished your stitching, cut the knot off, thread the end in a needle and weave it under some of the stitches on the back to make it super neat and secure
The waltz of the flowers! How very apropos! 💐🌷😄

Absolutely Gorgeous ❤ Thanks for sharing your video with all of us. This helps me so much to see how it is supposed to be done. Thank you again ❤
Marvellous instruction, Sarah. You anticipate the errors we might make and patiently explain best practice. Thank you.
Probably because I've already made them Nicola!

Good morning Ms. Sarah, I love how you stitch that and how you made that look 👀 so awesome 👏🏿. Thank you for your teaching and sharing with me. Thanks 🙏🏾 so much.

Your colour blending technique is quite impressive!
Thanks so much for this tutorial, Sarah! The use of the split stitch border is a great ones, gives it that bit of volume and also a nice 'bund' to prevent over-tightening the individual satin stitches.
It's always worth taking the time to do the split stitch it makes so much difference!

Great video. Thanks for the great instructions. I always wondered how shading is done. Now I know, and I can't wait to try it myself. Your work is beautiful.
Thank you B K-D. Good luck with your own silk shading.
Silk shading is my envy! I don't have the artistic eye for it. Keep up the beautiful work :)

Thank you very much for very nice tutorial. Good video quality. Well explained and a wonderful music.
Thank you very much, I can thank Tchaikovsky for the music!
I am wondering how you did the background green color on the leaves. I enjoy your videos very much 😊
I coloured them in using coloured pencils!
This is similar to the idea of working in wax or colored pencil for your art work, and putting down a wash of harmonizing watercolor over a partial area first to deepen and blend your pencil later from underneath.
Beautiful!
Wow working two needles at the omen same time. Impressive...
The more colours the more needles Shannon! 7 gets a bit tricky...:)
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery yeah I have trouble working with one.

Es muy difícil seguir su labor con cámara rápida , pero es muy bonito. Nunca había visto esa forma de combinar los hilos.

Muchas gracias por el video , muy lindo el bordado, y gracias también por la hermosa melodía
lovely embroidery. I use Crayons to color my designs, Use old cloth to iron wax from Crayon, then embroidery,
That sounds great Patricia! I love using different media with my embroidery...
Beautifully filmed. Yes, please credit the music composer, title & name of orchestra/ or symphony playing this Beautiful Waltz.
The music is from the RUclips free music library and it doesn't always say who's playing it Nancy
So beautiful
Hi Sarah what is the easiest stitch for the face split stitch or long and short stitch
Long and short is good if you want lots of shading, split stitch if you want a simpler look
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery thank you so much ❤️😄
You're stitching is in time with the music! 😂😊
Hermoso Hermoso hermoso .. 👍Felicidades Buen trabajo.👌

What did you use for coloring in the leaves?
Watercolour pencils Susan!
Me encantó gracias!!!
Are you putting your needle in on the outside of your split stitch?
Take the needle down on the outside of the split stitch Ellie; see part one for a more detailed view.
Love it
In part one you said to do the left petal 2nd which is in orange. Why did you change things?
Work the petals at the back first and the ones on top last Susan. Sometimes two petals are in the same position (both left and right orange petals are on top of the purple ones and behind the middle orange one) so it doesn't matter which one you start with
