this is probably the best camera setup i have ever seen. it's evident that you know just what you are showing on the camera view. no obstructions, clear camera quality. audio is clear, this is SO good.
When you learn from a mediocre teacher, you can only reach a subpar level yourself. When you learn from a master, you can also hope to become great. I believe that this tutorial gives us all the potential to become great at embroidery. Excellent technique, perfect explanation and very clear instruction!
Finally - found a video that shows how to fasten on and off a thread without having to turn the frame over. I've watched loads and never seen this before. Thank you Sarah. You are a genius!
From Beth, not Russ. I teach painting classes and, as a teacher, I want to applaud you for your videos. You are an incredible teacher. Clear, complete, slow enough to easily follow, generous with your tips and advice, expansive with the “why we do it this way” explanations and beautifully filmed. I’m returning to embroidery after decades long absence and it is a joy to watch your videos. Thank you so much! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have gotten 2 more people interested in Thread Embroidery from your youtube channel and sent them to you to watch LOL Just love your easy step by step instructions Thanks you so much for making these videos
Absolutely beautiful. And watching this gave me a lightbulb 💡 moment. Now gotta redo a flower I had started. Thank you for sharing this tutorial with us. Your stitching is just stunning and a total joy to watch you work your magic
I love watching your videos and wish the internet had been available when I was learning to embroider because my Mam didn’t know many stitches. You explain it well. Thank you.
I was so confused from things I learned as a kid and WOW you just retaught me and showed me different things I didn't know, I couldn't Thank you enough, I have subscribed to your channel for everything
I have a new respect for your talents. I'm trying to do long/short stitches. Oh my. Tangled threads & direction - I'd accomplish as much with my feet. Bless you for offering these videos. Its back to practice for me.
Take it slowly Jan! Simplify it and just start with one colour and work a whole row in that colour concentrating on the edge and the stitch angle. Change colour for the second row and do the same. Small steps!
So good to hear Abbey! Just practice on small areas until you get the hang of it; practice makes perfect! There is a video of the rest of this pansy going up online this week hopefully so that should help even more....
I really love the parts where you would give additional tips in embroidery especially on which parts one should should start stitching on, which parts should be stitched first and many other concerns that we may encounter. thank you so much!
Beautiful result though challenging to work with three threads simultaneously. Excellent tutorial with everything we need to know, nothing is left unsaid. Thank you very much!
You make it look simple and listening to your voice is very relaxing . Your instructions are easy to follow and I can't wait to try this . Thankyou I look forward to many more tutorials
Wonderful tutorial, thank you for explaining so thoroughly, I have wanted to master this technique but my attempts have been pretty dire so far. I’ll follow this and hope for better success. Many thanks.
Wow! That is a very interesting technique of fanning the stitches, makes a lot of sense and the result is very polished. I am going to use it to make round forms, like grapes. Thank you very much for this input.
Little tip for you Daniela; try drawing lines to represent the stitches on a design first, then when you come to stitch your grapes, you will know exactly what angle to put the stitches!
Sarah Homfray Embroidery, thank you very much Sarah for your tip. I used to make round shapes using either only horizontal or only vertical stitches, and have to say I didn’t quite like the results I got. This technique making stitches along a radius you’ve shown allows a more natural shading.
You are such a good teacher. I'm a beginner and thought I couldn't do this stitch, so I've been putting off my project. But the first petal I did looks good. Not like yours, but good for a first try.
Thank you for your vedio s, I'm learning a lot ,I enjoy embroiderey again,I noticed you stich over top of the chain stich, I was going under before watching .thank you!🌹
Hi Sarah, Your practical instructions were delivered beautifully, in fact, you made the long and short stitch not so scary! Thank you for this tutorial, i'm gonna have a go myself and see what comes out of the colour graduation in the final work. Thank you!
I like you, you're a great teacher. I really appreciate that you go into the whys. I also really appreciate that you took time out of your day to help me learn to embroider!!
Thank you for the clear instructions! I'm a beginner and I find the long and short stitches extremely difficult, especially the blending part. But you explain everything very well and I'll try out immediately!
I'm so glad to have found these! You explain everything very well, and the videos are perfectly shot. It's been hard to find videos that show the project really clearly, so this is grand! I'm definitely going to be viewing more of these videos. I hope to silk shading on a flower project I have in mind (ambitious for me since I've only just been embroidering this past year, and not often enough at that.
Thank you so much! We work hard to make good quality videos so it's good to know they are appreciated. Have a go with the little pansy to get the hang of this technique; follow the process and most importantly keep practicing (it won't be perfect first go!)...have fun!
I have just done one petal on my project in long and short stitch for the very first time, it was not good, NOW I will go and do the rest of my flower correctly, My instructions have said to use 3 strands all look very bulky will do as you have instructed Than You.
I use the Verstaile Table Clamp that you can buy from our shop here Carol: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/prod_4538062-Versatile-table-clamp.html Check the measurements in the detailed description to make sure it will fit your table first! I don't hide my knots on the back, I use a waste knot on the front then cut it off after I have worked a few starting stitches. See my video on starting and finishing threads here: ruclips.net/video/K1jFqcSRDhA/видео.html
I am just learning how to do this. how do you do a split stitch in one strand? on one of tris burrs videos she says to use two strands for the split stitch and also the first row. then I bought two of her books and never saw either one of those explanations in either book.. what do you suggest.. thank you
One strand is obviously finer, so if you can see it and want more detail use just one (stitch in the same way, taking the needle through the middle of the one thread when you split it; this is why you need good eyes!). Two strands is good if you want to bulk your stitching up a little bit (which I guess is why Trish Burr does it on the first row), can't see one strand so well or need to stitch it more quickly! I find the shading often isn't as subtle as with one strand though. There are stitchers who don't use the split stitch underneath at all, so it really is about what suits you and what effect you want to achieve. I find split stitch underneath just raises the edge up a little bit and gives it more definition. It also helps to keep the edge neat especially if you are learning as you have something to stitch over. Hope this makes it clearer!
Sarah Homfray Embroidery thank you. I am beginning to see that it is personal preference as to how I want it to look. I will do lots of practice before I even start the first project.
Bye !!!
How do you get it to go back in the hole ? That’s what I’m worried about but hopefully I can figure it out , what is the best fabric to use for this , thankyou for sharing this video I will start my first embroidery next week so I’m trying to figure out all the stitches techniques I haven’t figured out how they secure the thread in the beginning because I heard making a knot in the back is a big no no , also how many strands do you recommend to use thankyou sorry if I’m asking to much questions also I like your embroidery hoop stand or whatever it’s called
Check out our video on starting and finishing threads Valerie. I've used one strand on this project but it depends on time, eyesight, effect etc. We have a kit available of this design with everything you need as well as written instructions to accompany the videos and we ship worldwide! Check out our website: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/cat_264749-Designs-and-Kits.html
You can buy the table clamp from our shop here: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/prod_4538062-Versatile-table-clamp.html And watch the video here! ruclips.net/video/ElcnWWixmJ8/видео.html
Its just a normal embroidery frame held in a verstaile table clamp Val. You can find both here although we are currently waiting for more stock of the table clamps to come in, soon hopefully! www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/cat_264747-Embroidery-Equipment.html
Never did this before, looks beautiful, may I ask why you made the knot and other small stitches on top of the work ? Is it to anker the thread, so you do not have ends or strands you have to work into the embroidery?
The knot is called a waste knot Mirjam, it gets cut off once the stitching has started. The two small stitches hold the thread in the fabric while you start stitching. Unlike the knot, these remain in the work so you need to make sure you put them somewhere where they will get covered up! This method is great if you are working on a large frame that you can't turn over easily. You can use the two small stitches to finish your thread also, then bring it to the top and cut it off. This way you can start and finish all of your threads from the top of the work!
This was just the explanation I was looking for! By any chance, are you planning a tutorial on the first steps one should take when she is starting a stitching project (and tips on how to avoid clutter on the back of the fabric)? Do you have (or are you planning) a suggested tutorial/s for beginners? Thank you!
We will be doing more silk shading videos Mirjam and a distance learning class in silk shading as part of our Four Seasons set of distance learning classes, which will look much more in depth at this technique. To avoid clutter on the back, start and finish your threads with the two small stitches, bring the threads to the top when you aren't using them and don't travel them across the back if you can help it!
This seems to be a more difficult way to do this technique, using several different needles and colors at the same time. I've seen it done much simpler and turns out nicer actually. Also using more shades of floss gives a realistic and beautiful look.
I wrap the thread twice around my finger Geraldine, then roll it off to form a knot but you can just tie a granny knot as close to the end of the thread as possible and cut of any tail :)
There is a kit available of this project on the website: www.sarahhomfray.com. Get yours now!
I've been trying to tell the ppl watching this instructor that Sarah is amazing at teaching anything they want to learn especially as beginners.
this is probably the best camera setup i have ever seen. it's evident that you know just what you are showing on the camera view. no obstructions, clear camera quality. audio is clear, this is SO good.
Thank you so much entirepizza! We try really hard to get these things right so it's wonderful to get your feedback and know that it's appreciated

True!
You need to look at Phillipa’s Crewel Corner, then you will know a master!
Absolute truth. You have said it all. She is amazing and I suspect very patient.
I agree! Thank you Sarah!
Finally - found a video that shows how to fasten on and off a thread without having to turn the frame over. I've watched loads and never seen this before. Thank you Sarah. You are a genius!

Wouldn't that make a nice tutorial all of itself, the best stitches for curved edges and representing rounded forms?
Thanks Sarah love your stuff ……🎉
You are such a good teacher. I'm a beginner and thought I couldn't do this stitch, so I've been putting off my project. But the first petal I did looks good. Not like yours, but good for a first try.

Thank you for this tutorial, i'm gonna have a go myself and see what comes out of the colour graduation in the final work.
Thank you!
Thank you Josephine! Good luck with your own project.
Beautiful thank you. One question. When you snip the threads with the scissors don't you need to add knots. I am a beginner and trying to learn.
See my latest video on silk shading for information on starting and finishing your threads
Thank you sooo much. Great lesson!❤️
Excellent job! Thank you Sarah!!
Wonderfully explained thank you

Thank you aswee01. I look forward to making and uploading many more videos.
Thank you for the clear instructions! I'm a beginner and I find the long and short stitches extremely difficult, especially the blending part. But you explain everything very well and I'll try out immediately!
It takes a bit of practice, but follow the method and it will come Yue!
What about putting 2 different colours of mauve / purple in the needle? It also gives a natural, varying effect, without using multiple needles.
It will give you a nice effect but for shading you need to be able to control where the colours go
Hi Sara, I was wondering if you organises any retreat about hand embroidery.
I'm from Roma,
Buona domenica 🤗🌹
Thank you so much for the video Sarah! It was my first time trying silk shading and this a fantastic tool - helpful and clear!
You're welcome Charlotte, I'm glad it was helpful!

Lots more videos planned, we'll have a look at doing one on embroidery materials!

Thank You for this lesson! I appreciate it :)
You are welcome Pamela, hope you found it useful
This seems to be a more difficult way to do this technique, using several different needles and colors at the same time. I've seen it done much simpler and turns out nicer actually. Also using more shades of floss gives a realistic and beautiful look.
what stitches do you recommend when embroidering tropical fish? thank you
That depends on style of embroidery you're using Jane.
This was so helpful. Thank you!
How do you make a knot right at the end with just one hand?
I wrap the thread twice around my finger Geraldine, then roll it off to form a knot but you can just tie a granny knot as close to the end of the thread as possible and cut of any tail :)
