  • ►The P3 Volvo chassis shipped with multiple engines, the most popular being the 6-cylinder 3-liter turbocharged engine known as the T6 and the 6-cylinder 3.2-liter naturally-aspirated engine known as the SI6. Unlike earlier engines, these featured an additional cylinder and were transversely mounted in the engine bay. Because of this, both of these engines are more complex and have unique engineering solutions than their predecessors.
This guide covers the engine diagnostics and maintenance of a wide range of models and years. Starting first with the XC90 in 2007, these two engines could be found in the XC60, S60, S80, V60, and the V70 straight through until 2016. Follow along as Adam Goral, FCP Euro's Volvo Catalog Manager walks us through everything you need to know before buying or during your ownership of a P3 Volvo with the T6 or SI6 engine.

you should mention the transmission issues in earlier models from 2007 to 2009 (TL80SC-AWF). the shift solenoids in the transmission valve body can fault and engage harshly. these rough engagements are damaging to the clutch plates and with time will get worse. this is also noticed by slipping in 2nd and 3rd gear while under heavy load followed by a "slow down and shift up" warning and limp mode until restarted. this can be repaired by changing the valve body for a later model or a rebuilt aftermarket one. If your like me and went to repair this at 160,000 miles when it was very noticeable. I had to buy a new transmission, due to the amount of ware on the clutchplates. and debris/material in oil...
I love my 08 s80 T6 but damn did they mess up these early trans. still runs like a damn champ though!!!

Excellent advice. I have a 2012 XC70 T6 with polestar with 115k miles since new. I always do 5k mile oil changes and scheduled fluid changes for the coolant and transmission (50k mile intervals). Have only had a couple issues with the car. A coil pack that failed at 100k miles which I'll now change at the 75k interval with the spark plugs. And I had the alternator fail at 95k miles and a blower motor fail at 80k miles. Other than that the car has no oil loss and runs like new. I just did the serpentine belt, pulleys, water pump, PCV, and the vacuum pump last weekend for preventive maintenance. Such a great vehicle and a wonderful road trip wagon!

Thanks guys. My new-to-me car is a 2010 XC70 T6 that had lots of maintenance records and one owner (corporate fleet vehicle of some kind) and appears to be very clean and solid with only 102,000 miles when I got it. It’s an Electric Silver T6 with the only other option on top of the T6 package being the Climate Package.
This thing is sweet for cruising back and forth to work, or anywhere else, on the country backroads in my state. It’s very quick from a roll and handles MUCH more like a good European car than ANYTHING else with this cargo capacity and off-road ability.
It’s gonna definitely need a new exhaust before too long, but there’s stainless ones available for less than an OEM system and they’ll give better power and sound anyway.

Excellent video, one thing to add on the cooling system is the hose to the oil cooler that is prone to fail where it is attached to the block utilizing a plastic piece with an o-ring which weakens over time and may not be noticeable unless it is removed.

Another great Volvo video from FCP Euro. I used their kit and video to change the trans fluid on my 2010 XC60 and it went off without a hitch. New question though: I'm chasing an intermittent P0420 and I think I might have a bad upstream O2 sensor. I would like to further diagnose it, but I can't even see the thing. I've read elsewhere that it requires removal of the air filter and battery tray, but hoping Adam and crew might do up a video explainer. 🙂

    Very explanatory video !
Respect for such Great Job !
As a Shop owner I repaired plenty of Volvo 3.2L vehicle.
Indeed I came with this problem. Look at 4:27 . So one XC90 with 3.2 came and the owner said that battery did not getting charged.
Hmm, checking few thing and I saw the voltage on battery very fluctuate, 14.1V ~11.9V 🙁. Look at Alternator, no unusaul sound and by the way the owner said that Alternator it is brand New , just was replaced few months ago at another shop "specialized in Volvo repairs ???"
Anyway - I said to Him push the accelerator pedal all the way to 3k RPM !
Hmm, the Alternator did not rotate with the same speed. Again accelerating up and down - Alternator rotate with own speed. I got it.
I said leave the XC for couple days.
Remove intake and Alternator and indeed that pulley it is NOT tight.
I clean the pulley, bolt and apply a "Lock Tight" gel aloud to dry and install back everything. No more fluctuation on voltage. Everyone happy. XC90 left.
Hmm, after 10 days again came, SAME problem.
Now I check and found out that Volvo issues a recall regarding that bolt and pulley. I explained to the owner that He may need to solve the problems tru the recalls.
So at the end : that bolt and pulley it is one of the weakest link in this particular engine...

    • @ghostwrench2292
      @ghostwrench2292 2 года назад +2

Yes, the bolt and pulley are best replaced together because the loose bolt will wear on the pulley hole and it will no longer stay tight, as you experienced.

I fully agree, reliability on these engines are insane. I have a 2011 XC70 with the 3.2 and 330,000kms or 205,000 miles and the engine still runs like a clock. Burns a bit of oil, not sure why, but I make sure to keep it topped off.
Besides regular maintenance, I started having to put money into it in 2020 when the vehicle was reaching 10 years old. New fuel pump, blower motor fan, snapped serpentine belt, some suspension work (links, bushings, front struts) new trunk latch assembly. That’s about it! The vehicle has been in 2 front end accidents both totalling 30k in repairs.
We won’t get rid of it until catastrophic failure.

Great video. I own 2 S80’s 3.0 T6 (2012 &2015.5). My 2012 (176,000 miles) has a power steering leak that no one can find. No leakage from the reservoir or the power steering rack. Lines all check good as well. A volvo mechanic (30+ years) is baffled because there is power steering fluid on the opposite side of the car in the wiring harness that runs from the fuse box (left side near battery on the other side of car) along the lower chassis. There is no power steering components there. I looked myself while the car was on a lift. Both wheel well covers removed and the under carriage cover. Definitely a leak in the power steering because I have to add a few ounces a week to the reservoir. No evidence in the steering rack or lines. Any ideas where the leak is coming from. No leak drops on the ground to help isolate the location. Is there any power steering components on the left side of the car that would cause this leak to show up on the opposite side of the reservoir. The lines from the pump and reservoir pretty much reside on the right side. The odd thing is that the fluid inside the wiring bundle is where the power steering fluid is and it runs up to almost the fuse box. No one spilled anything or incorrectly put fluid in there. Is there some sort of vacuum hose or line that runs in the wiring bundle. Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.
Also, the 2012 does use motor oil and the 2015.5 does not.

Hi Ken - I may be able to help, because although very rare, i have encountered something like what you're describing. I work as a engineer for a transmission and engine control solenoid manufacturer, and we have on a very few occasions encountered similar issues on customer vehicles. The issue presents itself as an oil leak no where near the source of the oil. Hot (and therefore very thin oil) travels up wires, but doesn't seem to drip in route to its new 'destination,' sometimes a few feet away from the source. In the case of the rare instances we have seen, the issue was an electronic component where the oil seeped into the copper coil, and a seal inside the connector was missing, so the hot oil travelled through the connector, wetted the wire attached to the connector, and traveled to another side of the engine and presented itself as leak from the wrong side of the engine. The surface tension could even carry the oil to a higher point in the engine bay in some instances. The solution at my company was to insure proper sealing of the inside of the connector. I don't know the Volvo models too well (I watched this video to learn about the land rover LR2 engine), but if your power steering assembly has any sensors on it, or wires near it that may be making contact, i would check that the wires aren't wet with any fluid carrying it away to a new place inside your car. Best of luck!

@@jamesday2441 Hi James. Just a follow up with the leaking power steering fluid. You were 100% correct with your assessment. The fluid was traveling from the power steering pump via the electrical connector on the pump itself. The traveling fluid traveled to the other side of the car in the wire bundle the connects to the fuse box on the other side of the car. The mechanic never saw this in his 30 years fixing Volvo’s. I was able to source a good used pump and install it. The seal had to have gone bad on the pump connector housing itself. After the mechanic removed the pump and let it sit on his workbench, the connector on the pump actually filled with fluid on the housing of the connector itself. He cleaned the wire bundles with electrical connector spray and put new loom around the wire bundle. Thanks again for your time to respond to me and help rectify this issue. Great job. Pretty much everything yall covered except for the pistons and cooling system went bad. Other things id like to note that are problems are the vacuum pump seals tend to start leaking at 80k-120k miles (easily repaired), the engine mounts and torque rods tend to fall apart and tear, causing awful, awful noises in the cabin, and if youre feeling a stuttering, hesitation, and noises coming from your pedals, its most likely a wheel speed sensor. Hi Sobrid, the best thing to do would be to inspect the vehicle as best as possible, pull off the timing cover and see if you are losing coolant anywhere. With a good pump, coolant will circulate throughout the system and can be seen flowing back into the expansion tank. A bad thermostat can also cause potential overheating if the unit is stuck closed. Check for any intermix between coolant and oil, if you see some, a compression test or leak-down test is in order.

If you have a blinking CEL, then you should start by scanning for codes and that will give you an idea of where the problem might be. Good luck!
