I'm going to try to comment on every one of Tom's videos. tom I hope you still read these comments, you are the only one who truly knows the proper way to swing, what hogan found.
Thank you. This is really useful stuff. The grip allows you to pinch the ball off the turf which I could never do with a cupped left wrist. I find the best way to have the left hand turned "toward the ground" is to bring my left elbow into the left side of my torso.
Wow, this is news to me! I was always told that the v of the right hand and left hand points to your right shoulder, but watching this video has got me wondering and at the same time wanting to try this grip out in which I am sure I will at some point! Tom you are showing us golfers the opposite in what other tutors are showing us, this what makes it so exciting for us all who tune in! But on the practice area for sure! Don't want my golf buddies laughing at me once shanking at the first! Will get back to you if it suits my game?
Most of my students will gravitate to this correct grip over time. They use their old grip and learn how to swing properly, but the ball will increasingly go left. When they start altering their grip their ball flight will become straighter.
Hi Tom, love your videos... what is the role of thethe right fore finger next to thumb in the swing? Hogan says in 5 lessons that it can be a swing wrecker hence the finger thumb of drill to focus on the big muscles...but hints at a role in the release/shot making, for more advanced ball striking....any info?
+Tim Coates Hi Tim, Mr. Hogan wanted people to understand that too much right hand in the swing at the improper time can be a detriment. Only guiding through the hitting area at the last possible moment is the feeling of the right forefinger noticed. Earlier than that and the right hand will be out of sync with the rest of the body and the ball could go virtually anywhere.
The wristcock is the load. Holding on to the load is done by pulling back with the thumb and index finger of the right hand while pushing out with the pinky finger of the left hand.
That right hand sure looks WEAK to me and you also stated the "V" in that right hand should point at your left shoulder.......What ever happened to both "V's" pointing between your chin and RIGHT shoulder? Hogan said " The "V" of the RIGHT hand should point at the chin"
that's my exact grip......i can't believe it's actually right and people have been telling me it's weak and to strengthen it for years, which closes it way up for me and makes it feel very uncomfortable
Ok, first was Hogan a great or in the top 10 best players, of course! Yet, the more I learn about the swing during my 45 years I feel he wasn’t a good teacher. Neither was Nicklaus. I read all this when I was a teen but I never got better. In 6 months I see Malaska golf and already I feel a great swing. The modern players are swinging differently with modern equipment so why are we trying to use Hogan’s ideas, that he was pretty cryptic about, from 70 years ago? Don’t get me wrong, I use irons from the 80’s, but we don’t refer back to Jones and hickory clubs so why do we think Hogan has the ‘secret’. More Norman may help more, but go check out Malaska.
Hogan just wanted to people to put in some effort. He wasn't that good of a teacher because he hated to teach. Simple as that. And Malaska came to my Maximum Golf mentor John Schlee back in the day for help. Just saying...
@@Thesecretofhogansswing ah, thank you for a gentle response. As a teacher of math and science I always love to talk about such ideas. Agreed, Hogan and Nicklaus and Sneed didn’t teach since they were the competitors. And one could say Malaska failed as a pro(he might admit it). MAlaska even credits others with his ideas and others who sent him on the wrong path. I am definitely not the expert but I now think many mislead their instruction by saying the body rotates first and this always caused my hands to be dead. And when I went to two pros for lessons no one noticed that! Malaska got Nicklaus to admit that he ‘clears the right hi-, then the left’ while I think the arms swing. This is the golden move that got me right. I don’t have Nicklaus’ book but I wonder if he said it in there? Hogan worked hard and he had talent; he knew what worked for him. He was a man who was curious and driven. He was fortunate he found that golf could give him a living. He is an inspiration.
I get that about the hands feeling dead if you concentrate on the rotating body first. Some of my students felt the same way. but I think that feeling comes from loss of connection due to the arms not being activated. By activated I mean close together. By putting the arms closer together the hands will then have the connection to the turning body. They then have their role...body first, arms second and hands last. Any real action from the hands before their time will break down the chain action Mr. Hogan emphasized. Hope this helps.
Me personally, I cannot get much lag from this type of grip. My left thumb gets in the way. I've been experimenting with a baseball grip with the left hand. I can get more lag that way.

Tom.... the left hand as you explain it is completely contradictory to today's teaching methods...99% of instructors say the vee in the left hand should point to the right shoulder....not at all saying your incorrect I will need to experiment with this....in fact its surprising to hear...I gather it will feel odd
I'm a 4 handicap and looking to go lower. Honestly this is one of the best golf videos explaining Mr Hogan's grip and swing!

Hi Tom, thank you for putting video together, very informative
tomber i wanted to say that ur grip totally helped me out. i swing effortlessly 250 yards avg accurstely every time thanks
Excellent video. Validated my grip change I made over the past week which has enabled me to strike the ball with more power and accuracy.
Big changes ahead for me and my grip. Great content thank you.
Just be patient.

Hello Tom. I love your video. Can you please advise me how to maintain the angle between hands and shafts at address during boxing

Realised my grip was totally wrong. Brilliant lesson.
Glad I could help.
Great lesson here.
great lesson....inspiring!
How do you load the shaft with this grip?
The wristcock is the load. Holding on to the load is done by pulling back with the thumb and index finger of the right hand while pushing out with the pinky finger of the left hand.
Good stuff Tom. thanks!
Outstanding!
Are you saying that the follow through is started with the right hand?
No. The right hand is guided by the shoulder motion and the arms in the followthrough.
That right hand sure looks WEAK to me and you also stated the "V" in that right hand should point at your left shoulder.......What ever happened to both "V's" pointing between your chin and RIGHT shoulder? Hogan said " The "V" of the RIGHT hand should point at the chin"
how many beats r in ur swing 3 or two?
+john22philly 3 counting the finish.
Tom, can you do this grip with interlocking grip, rather than overlapping?
thankyounso much
that's my exact grip......i can't believe it's actually right and people have been telling me it's weak and to strengthen it for years, which closes it way up for me and makes it feel very uncomfortable
i can draw or hook with precision now
hogan was great
The best...

The baseball grip gives you a much longer left thumb. True more ability to lag, but also not as much control at the top of your backswing.
Wrong so wrong
Indeed contradictionary.
Bullshit weak grip...enjoy that slice
+Philip Fourie This proper grip does neutralize the left hand and gives more power to the right hand. No slicing involved when performed correctly.

Hahahahaha, i can draw or fade with the hogan grip and can chip very well.
Solid grip but will fade the shot
Hogan fought a hook all his life, his grip is setup for a fade as this grip is weak.
Hogan didn't consider it a "weak grip", he called it a "proper grip"
