- OK not retro computers this time. Today I look at my new Ikea chair and the annoying self locking wheel breaks installed on it.
Thanks for watching. I invite you to subscribe, comment and check out my other vids
Grant, thanks. Your video lesson is the most comical and most helpful clip I have seen on this caster isue.
OMG I 've been stuck (quite literally) with this for 3 years!
Thank you so much for your soluton
Glad it helped!
Me too 3 plus years and found this video. Thanks Graham!
Me 20 years
Thanks my son was having difficulty pushing this chair around finally it's free moving! Appreciate it.
Thanks - a great fix, but my chair is rolling down the street as we speak!!
Can't say you weren't warned Gavin. It's no joke!
Lol

😄😄😄😄
thanks for your video saved me from throwing out a chair that was given to me. If I wanted a chair that didn't move I would look for a chair without wheels, thanks for helping me to get my chair rolling again.
My IKEA chair has exactly the same wheels. Same problem. Instead of using a knife to cut the break tab off.... a small chisel can be used. Position the chisel. appropriately.. then a small tap on the chisel will cut away the break tab. Holding the removed wheel gently in a vise will make it even easier. An excellent and helpful video. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this, I'm going to try it and hopefully not make any scars to go along with it. 😂
Useful, but newer versions have hidden the brake behind even more plastic.
My newer version has a hole for lubricant (& the hidden spring). I'm hoping that extra silicone lubricant, liberally applied down the hole will solve the problem.
Edit: tried the silicone lubricant in the various accessible places. some small improvement, but still could be better..
Thank You Graham! You saved my life! Who designed that merchanism must be an idiot for sure...
thank you from Berlin 👍
Your most welcome, from Australia ;-)
Thank you!!! This is exactly what I needed.
I came here after a visit to IKEA and thought all their display chairs were 'stuck' to deter thieves. Honestly a terrible idea especially for people with mobility/dexterity problems.
Thank you sir
Much appreciated
You're welcome.
That saves the day!
don't do this to your any of IKEA chairs they designed in a special way...if you sit on those chair the weight above 50kg will bend the wheels in a naturally way and the break will automatically realese after sitting...those wheels are actually designed very smartly...they will move very smooth like a break less wheel after sitting and if there will be no weight the wheels get automatically locked. its actually a smart design that won't let the chair move if someone is not sitting on it. you will only break your wheels if you do this.
Found the wheel designer. They're absolute shit, mate
I have the exact chair
you're my saviour... all those months i could've been rolling freely, i'll never get those back
Thank you kindly, it helped
Thank you so much! And appreciate your added humor. I thought I just needed to grease the wheels as I acquired my chair from a neighbor who moved and considered they might have done something to negatively impact the wheels’ movement. But thankfully I found your video and my husband and I just cut the demons out without having to pop off the wheels (which I tried but don’t have 5-10 minutes per wheel x5 level patience).
IKEA, if you’re reading this, other chair manufacturers put external wheel locks on their chairs (to lock- push down, unlock- pull up) and those work very nicely.
Glad it was useful! Another chair saved from the tip.
This was perfect!! I didn’t even know that the ikea chairs were designed not to roll. That will be the last time I get chairs from there. I truly found the not rolling of the wheels incredibly annoying, so this really helped me out.
ha ha ... me too! Glad this helped.
Two weeks ago, I bought an Ikea chair with wheels. I knew about the auto-braking feature (several comments on the Ikea website complaining about it) but I thought it would not be a big deal (and I really liked the chair). After a few days using the chair, I regretted my purchase. Who came up with that "improvement"? I mean, it totally defeats the purpose of having wheels on the chair! Office chairs tend to be heavy (notably because of the gas cylinder) so if they can not roll when empty, they are very akward to move around (to park them under the desk, to open a drawer behind them, etc.). And my chair could not even slide, since its wheels are rubberized. And even when I was sitting on it, my chair barely rolled, which was uncomfortable (it did roll when insisting, but much less easily than a brakeless chair).
I searched the web for a solution, without much hope... And tadaaa, I found your video! Your method is a breeze, very quick and easy. And of course, it solved all my problems with the chair. Thank you so much!!
Hi Paul, I've made about 20 youtube videos to date and this one has more views than any. I'm so pleased it helped. Thanks for the feedback. It reeely is appreciated and motivates me to do more of them.
cheers
Graham
Hey Paul, thanks for the feedback. I do appreciate it and I am so glad my video helped.
cheers
Graham
YESSSS! Well done SIR! This is amazing. After watching your video I spent about 5 minutes fixing a chair I loved but have been fighting against for 5 years! And I didn't even need to use any band-aids. Just need to find my crash helmet now........
Yes this auto locking is annoying. Why don't they just lock one wheel. Expensive desk chairs have a manual lock. IKEA needs to lift their game. But good on you for troubleshooting.
A suggestion, instead of dulling a pocket knife, use a jig saw blade held with locking pliers and heat it with a flame. Goes through plastic very quickly.
Thank you so much sir! My chair is now moving rapidly to the next room when i push my leg a bit
Thank you so much for showing me how to turn my boring safe office chair into an exciting danger for life, limb and pet tails!
I promise I'll try not to cut my fingers off.
Aha, another thrill seeker!
Thank you very much sir…yes ours is from IKEA too….just finished cutting all the brakes…thanks again
thanks!
Right 100%.
Exactly the way he did it.
Thanks a lot.
Just going to return my Chair to IKEA and saw your Video. My Chair is so smooth now. p.s. I started to learn computer in 80's and it was a PET system from Uni, You bring back all my old memories.
Aha, 2 birds with one stone. Now you will have to buy a commodore computer to go with your chair.
I don't get the logic to the auto locking wheels either. It's going to tear up my new floors if I don't get the wheels rolling freely, all the time. Thank you Graham for your insights and awesome sense of humor.
Thanks Christy. At least its an easy fix now.
you can have a big plastic floor protection were you sit, even if you have wheels your floor will be damaged without it. They are called KOLON ikea, LOL
@@Gregeruno oh yeah I know. Got that otherwise my wood floors would have been wrecked long ago.
I noticed my wheels weren't turning smoothly and was about to try disassembling them to clean thoroughly. But instead I followed this video and it's perfect now! Thanks for saving me a lot of time and effort. It was easy enough to use a knife and cut the self locking plastic out. Your video pointed out exactly where they were!
Glad it helped.
thank you thank you for the hack that works very well, but this is dangerous and ikea needs to stop making these wheels that drive us to these fixes
NO ONE finds this automatic lock useful.
You saved my chair and my wallet. Thanks❤
Thanks mate your my saviour with this fantastic wheels
Thanks, my IKEA chair, whilst comfortable was driving me nuts with it's super safe wheels (hey, it stands to reason they are big on safety - how safe are Sweden's Volvos?!). It was a bit of work to go through all 5 castors, but well worth the effort. Thanks!
This is the most useful video on RUclips that really made a difference for me! Those hard to move ikea chair wheels have been annoying me for years
Thank you! I also do not understand the logic of having non rolling wheels. Mine don't even roll when I'm sitting in the chair. I thought it was just me. I think I might just replace them with some super dangerous rotating wheels. I've got my hard hat ready to go.
lol im actually looking for a way to lock the wheels cuz im slipping and sliding all over the place. So foar the best solution, IKEA wheels
oh wait, i skipped the intro xD...
Thank you sir. I bought my first IKEA chair and I thought it was broken.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I thought the wheels were clogged up with hair and other crap and was looking for how to clean them out when I came across your video. I never would've guessed they were designed to unlock when someone's sitting in the chair. Now I'm wondering if the previous owner had tossed away the chair because the wheels seemed broken. Oh well.
Glad it helped. Just don't forget to use a safety helmet from now on.
Thanks dude, i applied your second method, but before that i insured my fingers. Actually you can cut that plastic part with a little fruit knife, from the back side of the wheel it is easier to cut and took me only 10 mins for 5 wheels.
Thanks a lot for sharing your solution. Very strange "safety" system indeed
Youre welcome. I hope it helped.
Thanks Graham worked perfect. Saved a couple of chairs. Easy Fix.
Thanks to you I could fix the Ikea Orjfall chair of my daughter 🙂
Yes, you are so right. As I watch your video, two office chairs are speeding along at 30 MPH on Queens Blvd. because (I am sure) some smart alec has dismantled the brakes on Ikea's office chairs. However, despite the danger, I am laughing at your droll sense of humor. Thanks.
Call the police!
@@commodorecave5581: Can't. Mayor Dumblasio defunded them. Maybe next year. LOL
man.. i don't know why i didn't ask to the internet that before ... sadly my parquet is almost destroyed after 3 years of moving that chair around 😔
You've just made my chair, and my entire life approximately 5x better, and for that, I love you
Mine chair was totally different with those brakes but i digged little bit off the plastic and now keep rolling rolling rolling 😀😀
This literally saved me so much frustration…thank you a hundred times!!!
Mate that was brilliant, did mine with a small chisel and wacked them off, dead easy and now roll freely thanks. Saved me a few quid replacing wheels as that was my next move. Thanks buddy.
Thanks man, was just looking for this fix of this terrible blockage.
THANKS works a treat, and I have only knocked over 5 people today!
so funny. great work lol. i HATE this feature. like.. WHY???
I used some heavy shears to snip them off.
I cannot thank you enough 🙏
Great video!
Beware those office chairs!!
😂🤣😂🤣
Death traps for sure.
Exactly what hat I need it. Bless you my friend ! Great video!
Excelente video. I have been dealing with this problem for a long time. Lots of lubricant and frustration until I found the cause and solution in your video. Problem solved. Thanks to you!!
I was about to throw out my perfectly good chair
Thank you! Helped me. Why I found this video too late!
Just bought two used Ikea office chairs for practically nothing, both with bad wheels. This little trick made my day. Thanks a lot.
Good pickup and glad this helped.
thankuuuuu sooooo muchyou get to the point.thanks from edmonton alberta canada...
Thanks mate worked a treat took 2 mins and didn’t cut myself 😂
I am aghast hat you don’t have a commodore office chair…
Haha , Me too! Got a spare?
Have been dragging my chair around because the bloody wheels won't roll. Flipped my chair, cleaned wheels, sprayed them with WD40. Still won't roll. Will have to pull casters out of chair and perform brake surgery. Had no idea that chair had brakes. Thank you so much for guidance. Take Care.
Glad this helped Violet. Enjoy the new freedom.
You are very good at subtle wit - so am I - at times throughout my life - people have said, "Oh, I thought you were serious" or "are you being sarcastic?" LOL anyway - great information - very simple procedure to remove aggravation - thank you! Cheryl in SC, USA
Are you joking Cheryl? ;-)
Brilliant. I must have suffered for years. Slight modification to the above procedure was that I clamped the wheel in a vice and used a 6mm chisel.......5 minutes. Bliss.
My new Ikea chair is driving me nuts with its auto locking - can’t wait to try this hack!
This video saved me $20 that would cost me replacements of those wheels. Thanks!
Useful or not but as long as it helps to do the same operation on mines then I'll be happy. Btw, do you realise what a good ad you've made for the Swiss Army knife again?
Haha, maybe I should ask them for sponsorship.
Did this with a regular kitchen butter knife thank you
I just went to Staples and bought new caster wheels.
Thank you for this!!! You're awesome!
Thank you! I bought a brand new ikea chair at the thrift store today. I honestly thought the wheels were defective. Such an easy fix I never would have thought of!
Amazing thanks so much! Have just picked up a free vintage IKEA office chair advertised "with stiff wheels" and have cut off those brakes with a cheap but trusty IKEA paring knife from the same era as the chair 😂🎉
thanks, no more brakes and I am happy now.
Haha awesome!!! Always great to see humor involved ima useful video! Keep it up! Thank you!
You are most welcome Tom.
Cheers mate, been bugging me for the last few months now. Office Grand Prix here I come.
Don't forget the crash helmet!
You don't have to break anything. If you pull out both wheels along with the axel. The square bit (at the bottom and in centre of the wheels) is spring loaded and pops out. It also has two holes so once popped out, you can reinsert the axel (now with the square brake extended by the spring) and use it without the brake. My problem is how to stop the castors from falling out once you snap them back in.
Ah lol dam I had to break it
Sure, you don't have to break anything. But after owning one of them chairs for some time, you will want to snap each single one of them tabs off...
LOL great job.
it worked on the Jules chair! thank you!
Thanks! 😉
I can't believe how well this worked. Seemed very weird at first but it happened exactly as you showed
Thans mate. You saved me a hundred bucks.
lol. Good job
After two years of putting up with locked wheels, I watched your video and after took 5 minutes to solve my problem, thank you!!!
At last !
At first I was like "this guy is crazy" but then I was like "this guy is a god". Helped immensely, thank you!
You are 51% correct!
Thanks!
My chair is not from Ikea but has the same braking stupidity. Your method worked a treat and my wife loves that it no longer drags and marks the timber flooring. Genius!
Aye mate! done saved on a lotsa wheel purchases up here! Lovely tip! Bang on!!
What a great hack! Especially useful if the chair is on a carpet. And it does break easily with a sharp knife. Thank you!!
glad it helped.
Спасибо, помогли)
Thanks for addressing this with an easy fix and gave me a good laugh 😆
Glad to hear it!
You saved my chair 😂❤
I don't know the thought process that must've went through IKEA to make this. I mean shouldn't it be safer to have the wheels lock when the chair is occupied and moving freely when no one is sat on it.
yes but i must say in their defence this is the first genuinely dumb design ive seen from Ikea.
@@commodorecave5581 Which is why it's so surprising, for them to get something so simple so wrong. Even if the chair was on floor that was hard slippery I don't think the chair would slide away without intention.
You ripper, I thought I'd have to get rid of the chair. Thanks to your video, all fixed! Cheers mate
Hi Steve, yes I thought the same thing but then I figured there must be an easy fix. Glad it helped.
cheers
Graham
All this years thinking I had a broken chair! Thank you!
Is that an Amiga in the background ?
Indeed it is. Well spotted my friend. You've stumbled into the C=ommodore Cave. Check it out here > ruclips.net/video/B-ze3IUNI_E/видео.html
honestly, saying stuff like "be sure you have some bandages around and you'll be fine" is both less annoying AND gets me to exercise more care than saying "be very careful this is dangerous you might cut yourself"
definitely doing this after work
