  • A difficult question of the 21st century: Are digital pianos better than acoustic pianos? We decided to think about it more and recorded a piano comparison video using a professional microphone.
Yamaha CLP785PE Digital Piano and Yamaha U1 Acoustic Piano have a same price (approx. £5,000). We thought would be good to make this fair comparison of very different pianos with the same price. Enjoy the video and let us know in comments your opinion about digital and acoustic Yamaha.

When I was young, I always wished there were good digital pianos: no tuning, adjustable sounds and tunings. Nowadays we have that. As an owner of an CLP785PE I can confirm it is great to play and it sounds great. Then I am currently saving to buy me either a Piano or a Baby Grand and the U1 and U3 sound fantastic and now that I have a dream digital piano, I am dreaming of having an acoustic one again to have both choices. Concerning the sound, if you use Pianoteq on a Notebook, that beats everything and I found out that many pianist recordings actually are being made using software libraries while recording the video when they play the piece on a grand.

I have a 745 and I am getting a U1 so similar boat the 786 are good for digital but nothing beats the sound of a traditional acoustic. I teach so I get a discount I am getting $4000 for my 745 in trade I. Full value and the YU1 used is $7000 killer deal

Nice comparison, a well regulated, well tuned, acoustic will always beat a DP on sound. There is a huge resonance wooden resonance box in front of the player and the nuances are just too complex to be emulated by a DP. But the DP is a lot more user friendly, that is what most people want nowadays. Thanks for sharing

I listen with high end headphones and DAC and... the digital piano sounds chimey vs acoustic one ! Nothing is comparable. The hights, the mediums and the bass.

Both very nice indeed. The Acoustic got me hooked 🧡🧡🧡

A recording does not make justice to an acoustic. And the feeling is always better on an acoustic, which also can't be translated on a YT video. All in all, the digital is pretty nice sounding and can replace an acoustic if you prefer less maintenance and weight (and some things like MIDI, easy recording, DAW integration, ...)

It would be great to have also an interview with pianist to speak about the feel of both pianos

The acoustic just felt more alive. One way to describe is fresh food vs overnight food.

I don't notice a significant difference between the 785 and the acoustic in the middle and high sounds, in the low sounds the 785 has exaggerated OVERTONES (I really played it), on acoustic the low frequencies sound sharper and clearer than the 785. But if you need to record your own piano acoustic sounds instead of dealing with microphones buy a new 785, its great digital piano!

На низких звуках у 785 не преувеличенные. Ведь семплы у 785 рояльные. Вот мы и слышим низкий звук. Тем более в эквалайзере можно низкие частоты убавить. У меня Ямаха 785

How would you compare it in term of sound quanlity vs a real acoustic one. which range of acoustic pianos is closest to this electronic piano?

В clp785 слишком сильно выпирает эффект молоточков. U1 не хватает динамики.
А так звук и там и там неплохой, он разный, но хороший и там, и там.

Apples and oranges, I like both fruits, but they are entirely different... Apples vs oranges....sounds weird because it is...doesn't make sense....you can't pit a U1 "against' an electric piano of any caliber. They make the sounds differently, only played similarly...stating the obvious. Not sure about the VS in the title. Exactly the point of this video being?

Смысл этого видео в том - начинающие пианиста очень часто спрашивают, что лучше цифра или акустика. Так же существует мнение, что цифровое пианино, не может даже приблизиться к акустическому.

Classics pianist not so fast ny friend nothing. Beats the sound of an acoustic piano. The 785 sounds great for a digital piano but at the end of the day a digital piano is a digital piano and an acoustic is an acoustic That is why a new 785 costs about $7000 where as if you don’t get a teacher discount and you want to buy at the Yamaha store the YU1 is $13000. That is like comparing a Toyota to a Lexus. The advantage of digital is you can play with headphones and you dot. Need to tune plus you can play different instruments and set the best but nothing beats the power and sound of a traditional acoustic piano of a 48” Y1 So since a new
