  • Are weighted hoops the best for learning how to hula hoop on your waist and beyond? Or are regular dance hoops better for learning hoop dance and exercise? If you are looking to buy a high quality hoop suited for beginners and you are unable to get fitted for a hoop in person, or you want a weighted hula hoop, I recommend buying from my Amazon affiliate links below. In this video, I compare weighted hoops vs regular lighter hoops. I look at the pros and the cons of each hoop in different situations, such as doing hula hoop workouts and exercise, or learning various hoop tricks.
    I don't recommend blindly buying a hoop without watching this video. Weighted hoops do serve a purpose, just like non-weighted hoops do. Depending on what your goals are with hooping may dictate which hoop is best for you.
    Weighted hoops generally are best used for exercise and workouts. Weighted hoops can also add some extra weight to the hoop, making it easier for some to learn how to hula hoop around the waist. However, weighted hoops can also be too heavy for some to do more complex tricks or if you plan on hooping on your hands, legs, and feet. Before anyone tries a weighted hoop, I do recommend you talk with a doctor first because some people have been injured hula hooping before. Non-weighted lighter hoops can be great for learning a bunch of hula hoop tricks and doing hoop dance. However, lighter hoops for the beginners can sometimes be more challenging to use for learning how to waist hoop because they are lighter. Thanks for watching my hula hoop reivew comparison!

    I bruised pretty bad from the weighted hoop. Then I read about a young woman who bruised her organs using a weighted hoop and decided to get a normal hoop! A normal hoop is much more enjoyable and more conducive for tricks, so time flies and you can exercise longer and get better results!

    I’ve had a weighted hoop. Gave it away. Made my own (many, I tend to give them away, too, at the end of a show -SCI), and here’s my take.
    A weighted hoop feels like a workout. It feels like something you have to do.
    A dance hoop feels like playing, something you want to do.
    If you want the virtuous feeling of “having a workout,” a weighted hoop will delight you.
    If you want to feel like you have been playing (or dancing), a dance hoop will delight you.
    I did enjoy the time I had both.

    You know it’s interesting.. I’ve been hooping for a month and started with a dance hoop. It took me 2 weeks to learn to waist hoop without dropping the hoop. Yesterday I purchased a weighted hoop and after using it for 20 minutes, I picked up my dance hoop. Suddenly the dance hoop was so much easier to use!

    After watching your tutorial on making your own hoop, I made one today! I have never "hooped" in my entire life, and was never able to, but have always wanted to. So I started watching your videos and some others, and decided I was going for it! I could not find the 3/4 in size, so I got the 1 inch size of the irrigation tubing. And because of your tutorial, I made a bigger one that comes up to my chest. After a lot of tries, I got it going for about 20 seconds before I had to start again, but yay! I did it! I will be 53 in December, and my goal is to learn this before my birthday. Thank you for the awesome videos!

    I bought a weighted hoop just because I could get one faster than a regular hoop lol. I started off with a light up kids hoop from target, which I learned quickly is entirely too small. Ordered a weighted hoop just because I could find a larger diameter. Eventually I’ll order a regular one too!

It already hurts my hands and arms trying to spin it that way. At 82, I've been making weighted and unweighted hoops and teaching hoop classes for over 10 years. Peeps who tell me they cannot hula hoop first learn with a weighted hoop because it is easier and they have success from the get-go.. They start to move around and learn a few other basic tricks and then gradually add in unweighted hoops. It's not unusual to end up with 7 or 8 or more hoops of different sizes and weights so there is one for all their moods.

    I prefer the regular hoop :) Anyway, there is no weighted ones in Peru because very few people practice hula. I am begginer and cannot find big size ones, only standar size (wich height is shorter than mi belly- and I am not a tall person LOL). I also watched how to make one on my own, but really found it difficult haha.

Still struggling to keep the hoop around my waist. So frustrating-as i need to excercise to lose weight around my gut. Please help-you make it look so very easy & effortless.

    I recently purchased a "beginner hoop" that is 39 inches. I'm learning to hoop. Sometimes I think that maybe a smaller hoop would be easier because I want to spin it fast and I feel like the large hoop can't keep up with me. Everything I read and watch tells me the larger the hoop, the easier it is. Am I wrong in thinking a smaller hoop would be easier to spin fast? Also, what would be the natural progression for downsizing?
    Love your videos!

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  4 года назад +2

      Hey first off, thanks! You are not wrong to think that. I feel like if I'm going to be listening to electronic music with a faster tempo, using a smaller hoop can make it easier to keep up with the tempo because it does spin much faster. Where as hoop dancing to slow music, a bigger hoop might match that tempo better. Using a small hoop can definitely speed things up. The key here is will you be jumping to a smaller hoop too quickly is the question? For the advanced hoopers out there, using a smaller hoop can make the tricks they're doing look extremely fast, which can add to the memorizing effect. In order to learn a lot of those tricks, it might take a larger hoop to do so first and then downsize to smaller hoops after you nail those tricks. Maybe in your case because you want to spin the hoop faster, you might be at the point to use a smaller hoop. Why not use both a smaller hoop and a larger hoop?

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  3 года назад +6

      I recommend weighted hula hoops as long as it doesn't hurt the person. If you have never used one before, especially if you are not in shape already, with strong core muscles, then I would recommend erroring on the lighter side of weighted hula hoops, getting something no more than 2 pounds of weight, possibly even lighter. Yes, weighted hula hooping and hula hooping in general can be a good way to make your body fit

      Ok, well that's good to hear from your doctor. My wonder about the hoop not working is it might be too small. If you got the same hoop as the one in this video, the nice thing is that it comes a part and you can make it bigger. One option is to invest in another pink and gray hoop to take some of those pieces to join with the one you already have to make it bigger. Though it would make it heavier, a bigger hoop might be easier to learn with. As you get better you can detach people and make the hoop smaller.

    My sister used to hoop with a big wooden hula hoop. Talk about heavy

    I bought a weighted hoop for exercising but can’t get it spinning correctly. I watched your beginner tips videos but still failing. If I buy normal hoop for workout will that still help with losing weight?

      Yes, both hoops can work for working out with. What size of weighted hoop did you get? How heavy is it and what is the diameter size?

    I recently bought a hula hoop weighing 1.4 kg (3 pounds) and my intention is to lose weight. Is 3 pounds safe enough? Or should I go for a regular hoop?

      I think it can be for some people. Though I don't really have enough information to advise you on the matter. I think the main concern is if people have some sort of health issue that might cause some problems or they had some sort of past surgery or past trauma to that area that might cause injury.

    Wow! I've watched some of your videos And.. They are so informative and into details! Unlike some videos from female hoopers (no offense ladies, just telling the truth).

      Thank you for the compliment! Though I do feel there are loads of female hoopers who absolutely amazing and know more hula hoop tricks than I will ever know.
