Starship for sure knows what they're doing. Aside from the song and MV being fantastic, they've also... I would dare to say.. won the august bloodbath. They came back in the middle of a BLACKPINK and TWICE week and are somehow #1 on all the charts rn. I hope starship continues to foster this hype and popularity because korea LOVES these girls and they're also really popular overseas. So much potential for these girls future and I'm so excited to witness it
When I heard BP and IVE are coming back with singles just days apart I was preparing my popcorn too. Even better is that I like both groups so win win

The real winner this August in the girl group battle was the fans tbh. The past couple years a lot of girl groups have gotten stuck in the girl crush style. But last month we got very different types of songs from IVE, Twice, Blackpink, and NewJeans and they’ve all made it onto my playlists because it’s all been great. It’s a good time to be a general gg fan in kpop.
This wasn’t what I expected from IVE, but they managed to still exceed my expectations. This was a delight, and it’s such an ear worm too. I just can’t get it out of my head.
Always been pretty much a boy group fan but this month the girls have got all my love. Proper mad month for the girls and us fans.

She's absolutely the highlight of the song
As a main dancer she holds back alot. Allowing herself to be overshadowed. I know that Wonyoung and Yujin are pushed more but sometimes I like Gaeul's outfits the best. She's eye-catching, Gaeul has capabilities of surpassing the main members and becoming the centre.

The only big flaw of this song is that they don't utilize IVE's best vocalist, which is Liz.
I think the song would sound way better if they gave her at least one chrous, since it's too repetitive. If they always gave more lines to one of the top 4th gen vocalist = Liz, IVE won't get criticized by their vocal ability anymore.

@@kalmage136 I definitely agree and it's really that she doesn't get to show her potential in title tracks. Maybe it's like a confidence thingy where it's Liz herself who's still not yet comfortable with showing more of what she can do vocally in promotions but we don't know. I just hope starship starts to treat her more seriously next time. She needs like a extra 5 more seconds and a chorus. Her voice would have made the last chorus more impactful. She should have sang Rei's line in the last chorus since Rei already has a rap.
@@diveintolove4927 idk about you but I was informed by my sister that she has received a “bit” too much spotlight in prev title tracks, in terms of visuals. Which attracted more criticism to her, and apparently fat-shamed. Then I thought, “it makes so much sense” cause here, they dyed her hair black & gave her more dark clothing in both the music video & live performances. Like purposely, the company decided to shadow her due to visual criticism/popularity, instead of letting her shine. :(
Musical breakdown of why it sounds awesome: I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor, not Donna Summers) + 90s house pianos + putting the post-chorus (I Will Survive part) up a 4th (Dm to Am). Memorable samples, retro-feeling elements (the house pianos), and a key change that doesn't quite feel like a key change, all work together to make what COULD have been a pretty bland song into something fun and interesting. Also Gaeul's styling reminds me a lot of Peekaboo and it's great. (Personally though I think Satisfaction hits much harder, it's a b-side that could've easily been the title track.)
D is also the "victorious and triumphant" key plus the 2nd interval from the D tonic for both major and minor is A on the chord which as you mention it moves to.
Also on the Camelot Wheel, A and D mix together best for minor, major, flat major and flat minor. It's due to smallest harmonic changes and also linked to circle of fifths if I recall.

@@fanoflemons6191 It didn't hit me on my first listen either, because it's such a smooth modulation (due to Dm and Am scales having almost the exact same notes, it just feels like the postchorus starts on the 4 at first).

What I LOVE about IVE's style is that they find this perfect balance between old school kpop campy and elegance!
Honestly this Comeback we got SO many things to be proud of their VOCALS, Rap and Achievements Especially the RAK and upcoming PAK soon please, I'm SO proud of this 9 month old group that keeps on slaying IVE!

What I'm saying here is Wonyoung and Yujin is easily the Most popular members and they're also from IZONE before, so promoting them more is giving Starship and IVE more benefits actually

It's incredible how they manage to give them such original songs, hit after hit, while also staying true to their concept. I read somewhere that Starship has been planning this one too since Eleven came out and that it is all connected (through the narcissism concept)

Narcissism concept, that's what it is! I haven't been able to find a good way to describe it til now. That's why IVE stand apart from contemporary girl crush and lively concepts; they're 'above' those.

This single's b-side "my satisfaction" has a VERY particular and different sound, probably IVE's best b-side (coming from a casual listener!). You should check it out :)
The camerawork in the fireworks scene is absolutely masterful, the way it moves to help you feel the weight of the explosions is really clever
I'm surprised a lot of people haven't noticed the colors the girls use in their induvial sets, match the TV color test screen in the intro shot.
IVE are absolutely killing it! Their music is amazing and it's definitely reflecting on the charts as well. After Like is #1 everywhere in Korea & their single album has sold over 1 million copies, which is insane. Hope they keep this up and give us a mini album next time around because I really love their b-sides as well.
Just a theory but for me I think Starship would push them to Comeback as more as possible this year or until the first months of 2023 to stable their popularity (it's a great Strategy tho cuz it's working too good) I think they would release more singles this year or early months of next year for promotion purposes and I would be SURE their first mini album and all that would be revolutionary
this is actually my fav title. there are moments in the day where im like. "you and i. its more than like." and i NEVER hum songs. i get caught surprised by it. its so dam catchy. also i LOVE the rap. i rarely like rappers but i love rei and gaeul complements well with her. ive been consistently listening to this song. love it

I feel like they do that with all their songs.... it grows on you. And then relents. Love Dive won some 1st place finishes. Went on a mini hiatus... and retook 1st place wins again

they'll have a japan debut on october then nov-dec are mostly gonna be awarding season and year end performances while now (sep-oct) they have a lot of festival schedules to attend so i doubt they're gonna have another cb this year, early 2023 yes that would be possible with a mini album ig

one of the things i love with IVE is that they’re a group that’s not afraid to experiment. From all 3 songs (title tracks), all sound different, vibe is different, formula is different.
I would say they had a successful debut as well with eleven, but said hey, for the comeback, lets COMPLETELY change it up, and we got LOVE DIVE. A lot of other groups tend to lean to 1 sound, 1 formula, 1 vibe, etc. since it’s what made those groups popular, which honestly, i find pretty meh after a while.
Love dive was a huge success as well, but they still made it really different with after like, they werent afraid to see if it will be as successful as love dive or not, they take risks, and the company is doing it right.
After LIKE hit a million sales after a week of its release, so it’s another success! super happy with how things are currently going with this group, and IVE is def one of my top 4th gen groups rn! 💜

That scene in the First drop, reminded me a lot of old gen kpop mvs, kinda works well with the retro vibe a bit in my opinion

I think After Like is too good for a B side. I think it's amazing as IVE's title track as their prev title track Love Dive was a MASSIVE hit and has kinda branded IVE in with emotional feel to them, so I think After Like is a PERFECT emotional title track for the comeback following Love Dive
i don't know about charts but walking around seoul these past few days, this seems to be THE hit song right now. it's playing everywhere, in shops, restaurants, public spaces. meanwhile i haven't heard blackpink once, or most other kpop songs for that matter.
IVE is having the same effect that Twice had on me way back in 2016, i became a hardcore Twice fan after Cheer Up! IVE doing this to me is dangerous, bcs i know where it will lead 😭
august really was a cruel competitions for kpop, a lot of good songs released that month.
And the funny thing is that they’re number 1 all major chart streams in Korea. Even in RUclips Korea. Broke melOn records of Uls for a 4th generation girl group and has more than 232 hours charting number 1 in all major charts korean platforms. Korea loved it !

They've used the sample too well. Producers made it more sound like Kpop without detaching the vibes of the original I Will Survive icon. I love the this group's discography from their 3 tt's and bsides

Your description of 'Love Dive' with it being one of those really special, once in a generation type of songs really hit home with how it makes me feel as well! I have trouble putting words to my emotions but that song evokes something in me on a deep level and IMMEDIATELY had me rank that song on the highest shelf with something like 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' by Kylie Minogue ♥Thank you for your reactions and insight!! the amount of times I've listened to love dive and after like, OMFG. IT'S LIKE EVERY HOUR I PLAYED IT 7-8 TIMES.
When they anounced their cb i had the same concerns about it as you did, but i think they did awesome, even if its not my fav song from them either (But the bside is deffinetly my fav one).
At first, i liked the song, but it really hrows on you the more you listen to it.

Great analysis. I felt similar too - like is what you see on the surface, and love is deeper. More deeper. Like tje direct view of the girls is like, but the 'behind the scenes' look of them is love, seeing things for how they really are. The aesthetic of this MV reminds a lot of Sophie Ellis Bextor, if You watch videos like "Heartbreak make me a dancer" and "Take me Home" you would feel the vibe, and I just LOVE how refreshing this is! They played with the new disco mood, and made it youthful, playful, girly, and mellow. The girls look super chic and cool at the same time, and that rap was the Cherry on top!
